Pakistan’s Political Turmoil Continues Ahead of Key Talks With Opposition

The article reports that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders to discuss the party’s position ahead of the next round of talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Despite the recent botched raid at the PTI President’s residence, Imran Khan has announced that his party would attend the next meeting. Imran has reiterated his demand for dissolving the remaining assemblies before May 14th to send the country toward simultaneous elections. The PML-N, on the other hand, has refused to concede to one person’s demand of holding elections at his whims, claiming that doing so would erode public confidence in the electoral system.

Almost all media houses reported that PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz, and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar attended the meeting via video link. Senior party leaders, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Muhammad Ahmad Khan, and Ataullah Tarar, also attended the moot. However, Tarar denied these media reports, calling them fabricated. Special Assistant to the PM Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan confirmed that the Prime Minister met his party leaders at his residence to deliberate on the issue.

The SAPM stated that they would discuss the ongoing political situation, and the parleys between the government and the opposition would only bear fruit if sanity is allowed to prevail. He added that they would not accept Imran Khan’s demand for pushing the country into elections, which would erode public confidence in the electoral system of the country. Tarar said various options were under discussion, including holding simultaneous elections ahead of time. When asked about many parties in the alliance being not ready to consider the option of early elections, Tarar said he was not fully aware of his party’s position on the issue.

The political instability has had a damaging impact on human rights in Pakistan, according to the annual report of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP). The report, titled “State of Human Rights 2022,” covers a range of issues related to human rights, but there are other dimensions to the problem. The ongoing political conflict is undermining the intellectual capacity of the country to understand and solve the nation’s problems. Pakistan is grappling with the rise of religious extremism and intolerance, which is further exacerbating the situation.

Political instability suffocates human rights in Pakistan

The annual report of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) reveals that political instability has had a damaging impact on human rights in the country. The report, titled “State of Human Rights 2022,” covers a range of issues related to human rights, but there are other dimensions to the problem.

The political instability has also had severe economic consequences for ordinary citizens. This ongoing political conflict is undermining the intellectual capacity of the country to understand and solve the nation’s problems. Pakistan is grappling with the rise of religious extremism and intolerance, which is further exacerbating the situation.

Society is in disarray, with political polarization affecting relationships within families and circles of friends. The recent audio leaks that allegedly involved relatives of judges and lawyers and a former chief justice of the Supreme Court have created an ominous shadow of this aberration across the judicial and administrative structures.

The inability of Pakistani society to deal with its problems is due to the stunted minds of its people amid political and economic disarray. The political and intellectual leaders have not taken any initiative to address the deficits of society. The system of education in the public sector has virtually collapsed, primarily due to a lack of political will to empower ordinary citizens.

The rivalry between the coalition government and the PTI is unlikely to subside, and it may even take a deadly turn. Even if the two sides make a deal, it will not heal the wounds suffered by Pakistani society and liberate the stunted minds of its people.

Pakistan needs leadership that can transform it into a more civilized country where liberal and progressive values can enrich the lives of citizens. Unfortunately, Imran Khan, a charismatic leader with a following in resourceful sectors, has turned out to be the latest tragedy of Pakistani politics. The PTI has raised the bar of incivility in politics, but this is only a peripheral issue compared to the derelictions of Imran Khan’s politics.

Societal collapse is a dominant thought in many minds, but it is not possible to have a rational, patient, and informed discussion about it in the media or even in exclusive social gatherings of friends and colleagues. HG Wells said, “There is no way out or round or through.” This quote reflects the present situation in Pakistan, and it’s time to take urgent action to prevent the situation from worsening.

Pakistan government reduces prices of three key petroleum products, petrol remains unchanged

The Government of Pakistan has announced that the price of petrol will remain unchanged for the next fortnight, but the rates of three other key petroleum products have been reduced by up to Rs10 per liter. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in a brief video statement on Sunday. He said that the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) had been cut by Rs5 per liter, whereas the rates of kerosene and light diesel oil (LDO) had been reduced by Rs10 per liter each.

The new prices of the three products are as follows: HSD at Rs288 per liter, kerosene at Rs176.07 per liter, and LDO at Rs164.68 per liter. The price of petrol will remain at Rs282 per liter.

Currently, there is no general sales tax on the four key petroleum products, as opposed to the normal GST rate of 17%. However, the government is charging a petroleum development levy of about Rs50 per liter and a customs duty of Rs18-22 per liter on petrol and high-speed diesel.

Petrol and HSD are the major revenue spinners for the government, with monthly sales of around 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes. This is in contrast to the monthly demand for kerosene and LDO, which is just 10,000 and 2,000 tonnes, respectively.

In the previous review on April 15, the government had increased the price of petrol by Rs10 per liter. The prices of diesel and LDO were kept unchanged, but the price of kerosene was raised by Rs5.78.

The government’s decision to keep the price of petrol unchanged is likely to come as a relief to the general public, who have been grappling with high fuel prices for some time. The reduction in the prices of HSD, kerosene, and LDO will also be welcomed by consumers, as it will lower their transportation costs and the cost of living in general.

The government’s decision to reduce the prices of three key petroleum products while keeping the price of petrol unchanged is a balanced one that takes into account the needs of both the public and the government. It is hoped that this move will provide some much-needed relief to the general public, who have been hit hard by rising fuel prices in recent times.

Indian Media Spreads Fake Image of Padlocked Grave to Discredit Pakistan: Fact-Finders Uncover Truth

Indian media outlets have been caught spreading fake news once again, this time by running an unverified image of a padlocked grave, claiming it was a common practice in Pakistan to protect the bodies of deceased daughters from being raped. However, fact-checkers have since discovered that the image was actually taken in Hyderabad, India, and the graves were padlocked to prevent others from burying more bodies in the same place.

The story was reported by most major Indian news outlets, including ANI, Times of India, News18, Times Now, NDTV, and ThePrint. The image gained considerable traction on social media platforms and was originally tweeted by Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch.

Upon further investigation, the image was cross-checked using Google Maps street view services by fact-checkers, who discovered that the picture was actually from a cemetery located in Hyderabad, India, situated opposite Masjid-e-Salar Mulk, a mosque in Darab Jung Colony, Madannapet.

The discovery highlights the growing trend of fake news and propaganda being spread through various media platforms, particularly in India, to discredit Pakistan. It is vital to ensure that news sources are reputable and verified before reporting on them to prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain journalistic integrity.

Pakistani netizens have urged Indian media outlets to focus on the increasing number of cases of violence against women in India, rather than resorting to false claims to defame and target Pakistan. The spread of fake news can have severe consequences and can lead to a lack of trust in the media and the spread of hatred and division between countries and communities.

It is crucial for media outlets to prioritize accuracy and impartiality when reporting on news stories to maintain credibility and prevent the spread of false information. The consequences of spreading fake news can be far-reaching and potentially disastrous, as seen in this case.

The discovery of the fake image of a padlocked grave being used to discredit Pakistan highlights the need for increased awareness and vigilance regarding the spread of fake news and propaganda through media outlets. The media has a crucial role to play in promoting accuracy, impartiality, and journalistic integrity, and must take responsibility for ensuring that the news they report on is verified and reputable.

Actor Zhalay Sarhadi Opens Up About Miscarriages and Hypothyroid Diagnosis: Breaking the Taboo of Women’s Health

In a recent interview with Mathira, Pakistani actor Zhalay Sarhadi spoke candidly about her struggles with three miscarriages and a hypothyroid diagnosis, shedding light on the societal pressures and stigma surrounding women’s health. She shared how people often ask intrusive questions, making it difficult for her to explain the personal reasons behind her choice to have only one child.

Sarhadi revealed that she had three miscarriages that were not due to diet or exercise but were a result of her medical condition. She opened up about how a miscarriage can affect a woman’s body both mentally and physically, highlighting the need for more understanding and empathy towards women who have gone through this experience.

The Chalay Thay Saath actor also talked about the stigma and criticism women face regarding their bodies and appearance, including weight gain, skin color, and features. She emphasized how society’s unrealistic expectations can cause harm to women’s self-esteem and mental health.

In addition, Sarhadi spoke about the taboo surrounding mental health in Pakistan and how it prevents people from seeking help. She encouraged others to seek professional help, stating that mental health is as important as physical health and that there is no shame in seeking assistance from psychiatrists or psychologists.

The interview was a refreshing change of pace, as it provided an open and honest discussion about women’s health and mental well-being. By breaking the taboo around these issues, Sarhadi and Mathira have helped to create awareness and encourage others to speak up about their own struggles.

The conversation highlighted the need for society to become more understanding and accepting of women’s health issues, and for individuals to be more sensitive and compassionate towards those who have experienced miscarriage or other health challenges. It is essential that we create a safe and supportive environment where women can share their experiences and receive the help they need.

Zhalay Sarhadi’s interview with Mathira was an excellent example of how artists can use their platform to raise awareness and advocate for important issues. By speaking openly about her struggles, she has helped to break the taboo around women’s health, inspiring others to do the same. We need more conversations like this to create a society that is more compassionate and supportive of women’s health.

PTI to Continue Negotiations with Govt Despite Obstacles

0

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will continue negotiations with the government regarding the framework for elections within the bounds of the Constitution, despite attempts to sabotage the talks. Fawad Chaudhry, the spokesperson of PTI, confirmed that the party is committed to upholding the orders of the Supreme Court and will reject any attempts to disrupt the negotiations. He added that the final agenda for the negotiations will be discussed on Tuesday.

The announcement came after Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar denied any involvement of the federal government in the late-night raid on the residence of former Punjab chief minister Pervaiz Elahi in Lahore. Dar contacted senior PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi and denied any involvement of the Centre in the police action, saying that it was carried out by the caretaker Punjab government.

Fawad had earlier expressed concerns about the negotiation process becoming meaningless due to the attack on PTI Central President Pervez Elahi’s residence, the detention of Ali Amin Gandapur despite bail, and the arrests of workers. He questioned the government’s ability to make major decisions if it could not improve the ongoing environment despite giving assurances.

Despite these concerns, efforts to find common ground through dialogue between the ruling alliance and the PTI continued as the talks remained on track. The second round of talks between the PTI and the ruling coalition to break the ongoing political and constitutional impasse in the country ended with both sides agreeing to take input from their leadership and continue negotiations next week. The third and possibly final round of talks is set to take place on Tuesday, after which a decision is expected to be announced.

The PTI has affirmed its commitment to continue the election talks with the government, despite attempts to sabotage the negotiations. The Finance Minister has denied any involvement of the federal government in the recent police action, which adds to the concerns expressed by the PTI about the negotiation process. However, both sides remain hopeful about finding common ground, with the third round of talks scheduled to take place next week

Is Strong Defense Cooperation between China and Pakistan the Key to Regional Peace

0

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir and China’s State Councilor Wang Yi met on Friday to emphasize the importance of a strong military collaboration between Pakistan and China to ensure regional peace. The meeting was part of Gen Asim Munir’s four-day visit to China to enhance bilateral military relations.

Pakistan’s envoy in China, Moin ul Haque, shared the details of the meeting, stating that “the two sides reaffirmed China-Pakistan all-weather strategic partnership and underlined the importance of their strong defense cooperation for peace and stability in the region.”

During his visit, Gen Asim Munir also met with the commander of the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) at the PLA Headquarters to discuss the regional security situation and the need for maintaining peace and stability in the region. Both officials also reiterated the need to enhance military-to-military cooperation.

The army chief’s visit to China highlights the importance of the strong bond between Pakistan and China, which has only strengthened in recent years. Both countries have been strategic partners for several decades, with China being one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners and the biggest investor in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a multi-billion dollar infrastructure project that connects Pakistan’s Gwadar Port with China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang.

In addition to economic cooperation, the two countries have also been cooperating on various security issues, including counterterrorism and military-to-military cooperation. Pakistan has long been a key ally of China in the region, with both countries sharing a common interest in maintaining peace and stability in South Asia.

The strong defense cooperation between Pakistan and China is not only beneficial for both countries but also for the region as a whole. The two countries have been working together to counter regional security threats, including terrorism, and to promote peace and stability in the region.

Furthermore, the close ties between Pakistan and China are also seen as a counterbalance to India’s growing influence in the region. India’s increasing economic and military ties with the United States and other Western powers have raised concerns among its neighbors, including Pakistan and China.

Gen Asim Munir’s visit to China underscores the importance of the close and strategic relationship between Pakistan and China. The two countries’ strong defense cooperation is crucial for ensuring regional peace and stability, and both sides have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their military-to-military cooperation. The relationship between Pakistan and China is an important factor in the region’s geopolitics and is likely to remain so in the foreseeable future.

Record High Inflation in Pakistan: Can the Government Control Prices?

0

Inflation continues to devastate the lower and middle-income groups in Pakistan as prices soar, particularly for essential goods such as potatoes and chicken. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reports that the weekly inflation rate increased by 46.82% year-on-year and 0.15% week-on-week in the seven days ending on April 27. The sensitive price indicator (SPI) is used to determine this inflation rate, which has risen due to the increase in prices of potatoes (8.22%), chicken (1.75%), wheat flour (1.55%), gur (1.23%), bread (1.13%), and rice are-6/9 (1.01%).

However, some prices have decreased, such as tomatoes, bananas, onions, sugar, LPG, pulse masoor, and mustard oil. SPI was recorded at 252.20 points against 251.83 points registered last week, and 171.78 points recorded during the week ended on April 28, 2022.

Despite these decreases, the cost of living in Pakistan has reached an all-time high, further reducing the purchasing power of the citizens. The country’s failure to control prices has led to inflation decimating the citizens’ purchasing power, and inflation continues to worsen for the poor country’s 220 million people.

Fahad Rauf, head of research at Ismail Iqbal Securities, believes that SPI rose moderately due to the increase in the prices of potatoes and mutton. During the Eid week, the price trend of perishable food items was mixed. Prices of potatoes, chicken, and mutton went up, while prices of tomatoes, bananas, and onions went down. Despite this, Rauf predicts that April 2023 CPI (consumer price index) will be around 38%, compared to 35.4% in March 2023, mainly due to the month-on-month increase from house rent revision and higher wheat prices.

Ismail Iqbal Securities predicts that another interest rate hike cannot be ruled out due to persistent inflationary pressures and the absence of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. SBP might hold another earlier-than-scheduled Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting. However, this interest rate hike may discourage businesses, which have already put their expansion plans on the back burner and capped hiring. Furthermore, import restrictions have also increased the woes of industries and businesses, leading to frequent shutdowns and uncertain or no wages for millions of workers.

PBS compiles SPI by collecting prices of 51 essential items from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country. During the week, out of 51 items, the prices of 21 items increased, seven items decreased, and the prices of 23 items remained unchanged. Various weights are assigned to different commodities in the SPI basket. Commodities with the highest weights for the lowest quintile include milk, electricity, wheat flour, sugar, firewood, long cloth, and vegetable ghee. Of these commodities, the price of milk and wheat flour increased, sugar decreased, and prices of electricity, firewood, long cloth, and vegetable ghee remained unchanged. However, the prices of all these commodities went up on a yearly basis.

The current inflation crisis in Pakistan is a major challenge that needs to be addressed urgently. The rising prices of essential goods and services are causing immense difficulties for the poor and the middle class, and the situation is expected to worsen unless concrete measures are taken to control inflation. The government must take proactive steps to mitigate the effects of inflation by implementing policies that will help reduce the cost of living for ordinary citizens, especially the poor. It is essential to maintain a stable macroeconomic environment, develop policies to increase productivity and investment and improve the efficiency of the public sector.

Pakistan approves hike in drug prices

0

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet in Pakistan has approved an increase of up to 20% in retail prices of generic medicines and 14% for essential ones. The move has been criticized by drug manufacturers who said the increases were too small.

The ECC allowed manufacturers and importers to increase their existing market retail price of essential drugs up to 14%, and in the case of all other drugs, prices could be increased up to 20% based on the average CPI for the current year.

The ECC has further advised the policy board to review the situation after three months and make its recommendations to the federal government regarding a price decrease if the rupee appreciates its value. The annual inflation rate hit 35% in March, fuelled by a depreciating currency, a rollback in subsidies, and higher tariffs.

Fatima Bhutto’s Private Wedding

0

Fatima Bhutto, the granddaughter of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, got married in a private ceremony in Karachi. The nikkah ceremony was held at the family’s residence, 70 Clifton, and was attended by Fatima’s close family members. Her brother, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, shared the happy news on Twitter.

Fatima wore a white Anarkali suit with bangles and a silver maang tikka, while her husband wore a white Pathani suit. The family opted for an intimate ceremony due to the difficult circumstances faced by their fellow countrymen and women.

Fatima Bhutto was born in 1982 and has authored several books, including a memoir titled ‘Songs of Blood and Sword’, which narrates the story of her family’s turbulent political history. She’s also written for various international publications such as The Guardian, The Financial Times, and The New York Times.

Fatima’s family has a significant imprint on Pakistan’s political history. Her grandfather was the country’s prime minister, and her aunt, Benazir Bhutto, also served as the country’s premier. However, Fatima has largely remained out of the political spotlight, focusing instead on her career as a writer and activist.

PM secures trust vote

0

It is notable that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was able to secure a trust vote with a significant majority of 180 lawmakers expressing their confidence in his leadership. This is an important development for the prime minister and his political party, as it confirms his legitimacy as the country’s leader.

The fact that the vote was unannounced and came just two days after the Information Minister had denied reports of a planned vote of confidence suggests that there may have been some behind-the-scenes maneuvering to ensure the prime minister’s victory. It is unclear at this point who may have been involved in such efforts.

The prime minister’s rejection of the idea that the courts have the right to rewrite the Constitution is also noteworthy. This may be seen as a response to recent legal challenges to his government’s policies and actions, as well as a statement of his commitment to upholding the rule of law.

The rejection of the motion seeking the release of $21bn for the Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct polls for the third time is also significant. This may be seen as a sign of ongoing political tension and gridlock in the country, as well as a potential obstacle to the holding of free and fair elections in the future.

Election impasse continues

0

The second round of election talks between Pakistan’s ruling coalition and the opposition PTI party ended with both sides tabling their proposals. Members of both parties will now consult their leadership on the proposals before talks resume on Tuesday. Progress was made, and both sides agreed that they would remain within the boundaries of the Constitution.

The PTI’s representatives will take the proposals back to their leadership, while government ministers insisted that they could not reveal the contents of their proposals. PTI leader Imran Khan said the party would make a decision on the talks by the following day.

Are the Pakistan Armed Forces Combat-Worthy?

0

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of Pakistan has released a statement clarifying that the media’s discussion of the combat worthiness of Pakistan’s armed forces has taken the former army chief’s views on the future threat to Pakistan out of context. The ISPR assured the people of Pakistan that the military has always been prepared and combat-worthy, and it will continue to prioritize operational preparedness, equipment, and battle-hardened human resources for the defense of the country.

The ISPR statement comes after journalist Hamid Mir claimed that former COAS Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa had told journalists in 2021 that the Pakistan Army was not capable of combat. Mir further alleged that Bajwa had made a deal on occupied Kashmir, which details have yet to be made public. However, the ISPR denied these claims, stating that Bajwa’s views had been taken out of context, and the armed forces’ combat worthiness was not in question.

The statement by the ISPR reiterates the military’s commitment to operational preparedness and the defense of the country. The media’s misinterpretation of the former army chief’s views on future threats to Pakistan should not undermine the military’s efforts to maintain combat readiness.

It is important to note that discussions on the combat worthiness of a country’s military are crucial to ensure that armed forces are prepared for any eventualities. However, it is equally important to report such discussions accurately and without misquoting or misinterpreting them. This way, the public can have faith in the armed forces ability to defend the country against any threat.

The ISPR statement clarifying the context of the former army chief’s views on the combat worthiness of Pakistan’s armed forces is a reminder to the media to report such discussions accurately. While the media plays a critical role in informing the public about the state of the country’s military readiness, it is equally important not to undermine the military’s efforts by misquoting or misinterpreting such discussions.

How is pop culture transforming traditional ceremonies?

0

In Pakistani weddings, there is a tradition called “joota chupai” where the bride’s sisters steal the groom’s shoes and demand money in return. However, at one particular wedding, the tradition was taken to a whole new level when the bride asked her cousin to dress up as a character from the popular TV show Money Heist to steal the shoes.

The bride, named Warda Sikander, shared a video of the event on her Instagram, which quickly went viral, garnering over two million views in just a few days. In the caption, she explained that she wanted to make her wedding unique and exciting and came up with the idea of a “joota heist” with the help of her sister and cousin.

The video shows the bride’s brother, dressed in the iconic Salvador Dali mask and overalls, running up to the stage and stealing the groom’s shoes while the rest of the family dances to the beats of Bella Ciao. The guests seemed to enjoy the new take on the tradition, and social media users praised the idea, calling it unique and fun.

This event highlights how people are incorporating modern pop culture references into traditional ceremonies, creating a fusion of the old and new. It is also a testament to the power of social media, as the video was able to reach millions of people worldwide, spreading joy and inspiration.

The “joota chupai” tradition is prevalent in many South Asian cultures, including Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. It is a lighthearted and playful way of initiating the groom into the bride’s family and testing his love for his bride. However, in recent years, the tradition has become more commercialized, with brides’ sisters demanding large sums of money in exchange for the shoes.

While some may argue that this takes away from the fun and innocence of the tradition, events like the “joota heist” show that there is still room for creativity and humor in these ceremonies. As long as they are conducted with respect and love, these traditions will continue to evolve and adapt to the changing times.

In conclusion, the “joota heist” at Warda Sikander’s wedding is a prime example of how people are incorporating modern elements into traditional ceremonies, creating a fusion of old and new. It also demonstrates how social media has the power to spread joy and inspiration worldwide. As we move forward, we should celebrate and embrace these innovative approaches to age-old traditions and find ways to make them our own.

Constitutional crisis in Pakistan: Can the Supreme Court resolve the dispute over elections?

0

The Senior Vice President of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Fawad Chaudhry, has called on the government to either amend the Constitution or hold elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies in accordance with the Supreme Court’s ruling. Chaudhry argued that the Constitution stipulates that polls should be held within 90 days after the dissolution of assemblies and that the government must either amend the Constitution by a two-thirds majority or hold the elections. The PTI had previously dissolved the assemblies to pressure the government into holding early general elections, but the ruling Shehbaz-led government did not give in to the demand.

The Supreme Court recently directed that elections in Punjab should be held on May 14, and instructed the ruling coalition and the PTI to reach a consensus on the date for polls, with an update due on April 27. However, the government has been accused of planning to create anarchy in the country, with PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi alleging that the government’s intentions were not sincere and that it was edging towards violating the Constitution. Qureshi stated that PTI leaders would appear in court hearings and abide by the Supreme Court’s verdict.

The government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has claimed that the Supreme Court does not have the power to act as an arbitrator between the government and the PTI and that its job is to announce verdicts in accordance with the law and the Constitution. PM Sharif announced that the matter would be referred to a parliamentary committee, after convening a meeting of the ruling allies.

The ongoing dispute raises questions about the extent of the Supreme Court’s power in relation to the government and political parties, as well as the importance of adhering to the Constitution. It also highlights the challenges of ensuring free and fair elections in Pakistan and the need for a robust and independent electoral system.

Should the Pakistani government comply with the Supreme Court’s order to provide funds for holding general elections in Punjab and KP?

0

In a recent development, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar stated that the Pakistani government cannot violate the Constitution by issuing funds to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for holding general elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on the orders of the Supreme Court. He criticized Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for dissolving the Punjab and KP assemblies, claiming that the move was aimed at spreading anarchy in the country.

The minister alleged that the trouble started after the Supreme Court redefined Article 63-A of the Constitution, which resulted in the handover of the Punjab government to PTI. He criticized the apex court for interfering in politicians’ domain and stated that if Article 63-A of the Constitution had not been redefined, the assemblies would not have been dissolved.

The government, in line with the law, brought the ECP’s request for the release of funds before the cabinet and the parliament, both of whom rejected the proposal. The minister noted that even the State Bank of Pakistan cannot release the funds, and questioned what would happen if the elections are held after three to four months. He further stated that the government was being asked to do an ‘illegal’ thing and he would never advise the cabinet to do so.

Ishaq Dar lambasted the PTI-led previous government for pushing the country to the brink of collapse and stated that the country was standing at a critical juncture. He added that the country witnessed Panama and Dawn leaks drama during the past five years, and the country would not have been in crisis if he had been listened to.

In April, the Supreme Court declared ECP’s decision to postpone elections to the Punjab Assembly till October 8 “unconstitutional” and fixed May 14 as the new date. However, the National Assembly later passed a resolution rejecting the three-member Supreme Court bench’s verdict on the Punjab polls, stating that it would not provide funds to the ECP for polls.

The question that arises is whether the government should comply with the Supreme Court’s order and provide funds for holding general elections in Punjab and KP or not. The government has cited the Constitution and the rejection of the proposal by both the cabinet and the parliament as reasons for their refusal to release the funds. However, the Supreme Court has warned of ‘dire consequences’ over the non-provision of election funds.

Economic Instability Hinders Hajj Pilgrimage: Should Religious Obligations be Affected by Financial Constraints?

0

The Pakistani government is reportedly considering returning its Hajj quota to Saudi Arabia due to a lack of applications caused by rising inflation and a shortage of dollars. This year, a quota for the Hajj pilgrimage was available in the country for the first time, but authorities received a low number of applications, which they attribute to high inflation. The final decision to return the quota will be made by the federal cabinet. The government also considered giving the official Hajj quota to private operators, but this would cause unnecessary demand for foreign currency, as they would need to collect dollars from the open market.

Pakistan has been demanding an increase in the Hajj quota, allowing for 179,210 pilgrims to 202,000 or 201,000 pilgrims. However, this year, when the country received its complete quota of 179,000 pilgrims after many years, it was not utilized entirely due to the lack of applicants. The expense of government-sponsored Hajj is around Rs1.2 million.

To address the acute shortage of dollars amid the collapsing economy, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony had decided to allocate a 50% special quota in the Government Hajj Scheme-2023 for pilgrims who would pay in US dollars. However, only 8,000 applications were received under the sponsorship scheme, and the government fell short of 9,000 applicants, with a quota of 89,605 Hajj pilgrims set under the government scheme.

Under the official regular scheme, 28,679 additional applications were received against the quota of 44,190, and the additional applicants were sent for the Hajj pilgrimage without a lucky draw. The sources said that a total of $235 million was required for the government scheme, with some of the funds being provided by the sponsorship scheme and the rest by the government.

The shortage of dollars and rising inflation have resulted in a lack of applications for the Hajj pilgrimage in Pakistan, leading to the government considering returning its quota to Saudi Arabia. The situation raises questions about the impact of economic instability on religious practices and the affordability of religious obligations for individuals and governments.

Should lawmakers be prevented from attending parliamentary sessions?

0

On April 26, 2023, seven lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party were stopped by the Islamabad Police from entering the National Assembly during an ongoing session. The lawmakers were from Karachi and had resigned from their seats in protest of the party Chairman Imran Khan’s ouster in April last year. Months later, their resignations were accepted by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. However, they approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) seeking reinstatement and holding by-elections on their seats. The SHC ruled in their favor, and their suspension was lifted, giving them the right to attend the assembly session. The lawmakers announced their decision to attend the NA session during a meeting in Karachi and wrote a letter to the lower house speaker, informing him about it.

However, when they arrived at the Parliament House, they were stopped by the police, leading to a standoff. The PTI MNAs chanted slogans against the NA speaker, prime minister, and interior minister while demanding entry into the lower house of parliament. An exchange of harsh words took place between the lawmakers and the police before the former eventually returned after staging a protest against the resistance from the police at the NA’s main gate.

The incident raises questions about the role of lawmakers in a democratic society. Should lawmakers be prevented from attending parliamentary sessions, even if they have a legal right to do so? Does such an act go against the principles of democracy? What can be done to prevent such incidents from happening in the future?

One argument is that preventing lawmakers from attending parliamentary sessions goes against the principles of democracy. In a democracy, elected representatives have the right to attend parliamentary sessions and participate in debates and discussions on behalf of their constituents. By preventing lawmakers from doing so, their constituents’ voices are silenced, which is not acceptable in a democratic society.

However, another argument is that there may be situations where preventing lawmakers from attending parliamentary sessions is necessary. For example, if lawmakers pose a threat to public safety, it may be necessary to prevent them from attending the session. In such situations, it is important to ensure that the lawmakers’ legal rights are not violated and that due process is followed.

To prevent such incidents from happening in the future, it is essential to ensure that lawmakers’ legal rights are respected. The government and law enforcement agencies should be mindful of the legal procedures and due process when dealing with such situations. There should be clear guidelines on how to handle situations where lawmakers are prevented from attending parliamentary sessions, and these guidelines should be followed in the letter.

The incident where PTI lawmakers were prevented from attending the National Assembly session raises questions about the role of lawmakers in a democratic society. While it is important to ensure public safety, lawmakers’ legal rights should be respected at all times. There should be clear guidelines on how to handle situations where lawmakers are prevented from attending parliamentary sessions, and these guidelines should be followed in the letter.

“Money Back Guarantee” Review

0

The review is about the movie “Money Back Guarantee,” directed by Faisal Qureshi. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Fawad Khan, Wasim Akram, and others, and explores the dichotomy of capitalism and socialism while touching on societal issues such as corruption, VIP culture, and discrimination.

The movie is set in a fictional bank that holds the wealth of corrupt politicians in Pakistan, and a gang of amateurs tries to rob it to reclaim the people’s money. While the characters are well fleshed out, the plot is chaotic, and cause-and-effect issues leave the audience questioning how and why things are happening. The film’s humor and satire don’t always land, and it relies too heavily on its star-studded cast. While there are moments of entertainment, the movie as a whole is a letdown.

The film does have some entertaining moments, particularly when it focuses on social messaging and political satire. The use of symbolism, such as the Pak bank representing the corrupt system in Pakistan, is cleverly done and adds depth to the film. The portrayal of stereotypes in the film is also well-executed, highlighting the issues prevalent in society while also poking fun at them.

However, the film heavily relies on its star-studded cast, and some of the actors’ performances feel forced and over-the-top. While Fawad Khan shines in his role as the cheapskate bank manager, Bux, some of the other performances fall flat. Gohar Rasheed’s portrayal of an unemployed goon is decent, but his accent doesn’t quite hit the mark, and it becomes a distraction rather than an asset.

The plot of the film is centered around a heist, and while it does provide some comedic moments, it also feels disjointed and lacks coherence. The changing plan of the robbers as they face setbacks becomes chaotic, and the film struggles to find a center. The cause-and-effect issues in the plot make it difficult to understand why certain events are happening.

‘Money Back Guarantee’ has its entertaining moments, but it doesn’t quite live up to its hype. The film’s reliance on its star cast and lack of coherence in the plot may leave some viewers disappointed. Nonetheless, it does offer a satirical commentary on the societal issues prevalent in Pakistan, making it worth a watch for those interested in political comedies.

What is the Persistent Maoist Insurgency in India and Why Does it Continue to Plague the Country?

0

Ten police personnel and their driver were killed in India’s central Chhattisgarh state in an attack blamed on Maoist rebels. The incident occurred when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) while returning from an operation to investigate rebel movements in the remote Dantewada district. This is the worst casualties for security forces in more than two years, and it highlights the persistent Maoist insurgency that has plagued India since the 1960s.

India’s Maoist insurgency has claimed thousands of lives over the years, although violence has decreased considerably in recent times. The insurgency is predominantly concentrated in the “Red Corridor,” an insurgent-dominated region that spans several central, southern, and eastern states. Maoist groups, also known as Naxalites, say they are fighting for rural people and the poor. They operate primarily in areas where much of the population remains mired in poverty and lacks access to critical services.

The Indian government has deployed tens of thousands of forces to battle the rebels across the Red Corridor. Delhi has also invested heavily in infrastructure development in remote areas dominated by tribal communities and claims to have confined the armed insurgency to 53 districts in 2020, down from 96 in 2010.

Despite these efforts, Maoist rebels continue to launch attacks on security forces, civilians, and infrastructure. In March 2020, 17 police from a commando patrol were killed in an attack by over 300 armed rebels in Chhattisgarh. In 2019, sixteen commandos were killed in the western state of Maharashtra in a bomb attack that was also blamed on the Maoists in the lead-up to India’s election.

The recent attack in Chhattisgarh underscores the persistent threat of Maoist insurgency in India, despite Delhi’s efforts to counter it. The attack also raises questions about the effectiveness of the government’s strategies to combat the insurgency and whether more needs to be done to address the root causes of the conflict, such as poverty and lack of access to critical services.

The Maoist insurgency remains a significant challenge for India’s security forces, and attacks such as the recent one in Chhattisgarh highlight the continued threat posed by Maoist rebels. While the government has made efforts to counter the insurgency, it is clear that more needs to be done to address the underlying causes of the conflict and find a lasting solution to the insurgency.

Pakistan Evacuates Over 400 Nationals from War-torn Sudan Amid Ongoing Violence

0

Over 400 Pakistanis have been safely evacuated from Sudan and are being lodged at Port Sudan before arrangements for their onward journey are coordinated, according to a statement from the Foreign Office. The office said it was closely monitoring the situation in Sudan and working with Pakistan’s missions in the region to provide relief to Pakistanis affected by the violence. A follow-up virtual meeting was held by Foreign Secretary Asad Majeed Khan with Pakistan’s missions in Sudan and neighboring countries to discuss safe evacuation modalities for Pakistanis.

A Saudi Arabian-arranged operation had previously evacuated an unknown number of Pakistanis from Khartoum last week. The ongoing battle between the military and the well-armed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group in Sudan has led to a humanitarian crisis and the death of 420 people, with millions of Sudanese without access to basic services and thousands of foreign nationals trapped in the war zone. The main airport has been at the center of the fighting, and artillery barrages have made movement in and out of one of Africa’s largest cities unsafe. Diplomats have been targeted in attacks, and at least five aid workers have been killed.

Despite pressure from concerned countries, the two sides have not abided by a temporary truce, and several convoys involved in evacuations have come under attack. However, fighting calmed over the weekend, leading to a rush of evacuations by other countries, including France and Germany, who said they had evacuated around 700 people. In addition to Pakistan, several other countries have also evacuated their nationals from Sudan, including Indonesia, China, Denmark, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, and Japan. The United States evacuated embassy staff out by military helicopter, while some convoys took people by road to Port Sudan on the Red Sea. From there, some boarded ships to Saudi Arabia.

The evacuation of international staff from Darfur, the western region where fighting has also escalated, is also underway, with some heading to Chad and others to South Sudan. The ongoing violence in Sudan has closed most hospitals and curtailed water and electricity supplies. The killing of aid workers, including three from the World Food Programme, has led the UN agency to pause its operations in the country, which relies on food aid for about a quarter of its people. The army and RSF jointly staged a coup in 2021 but fell out during negotiations to integrate the two groups and form a civilian government four years after long-ruling autocrat Omar al-Bashir was toppled. Their rivalry has raised the risk of a wider conflict that could draw in outside powers.

Punjab Police Shot and Killed Two Innocent Teenagers in Multan: Calls for Police Reform Intensify

0

In a heartbreaking incident, the Punjab police have once again come under fire for opening fire on innocent teenagers, killing two of them and leaving one injured in Multan. The victims were on their way back home after having dinner at a hotel when they were fatally shot by the police.

According to the police, the teenagers had no criminal record, yet they were still targeted. The injured brother of one of the deceased victims, Irfan, stated that they were on their way to drop off their friend, Samiullah when the police suddenly opened fire from behind. A single bullet went through his brother and Samiullah, resulting in their untimely deaths.

Irfan further alleged that the policemen claimed that someone else had fired from behind, and they did not even try to help take the injured teenagers to the hospital. He also expressed his ability to identify the three police officials responsible for the killing of his brother. The wounded brother further added that:

it was his brother’s wedding day, and justice must be served for their family

The incident has sparked outrage across the country, with many calling for an immediate investigation and the punishment of the officers responsible for this heinous crime. The government has assured the public that they will not tolerate such actions from the police, and strict action will be taken against those responsible.

It is not the first time that the Punjab police have been accused of using excessive force against innocent civilians. In recent years, there have been several incidents where police officers have killed or injured unarmed individuals, resulting in public protests and demands for police reform.

The tragic incident in Multan highlights the urgent need for police reform in the country. The police must be held accountable for their actions, and there must be an independent mechanism to investigate complaints of police brutality and excessive use of force.

The killing of two innocent teenagers by the Punjab police is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for police reform in Pakistan. The government must take immediate action to hold the police accountable and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.

Imran Khan dissolves assemblies

0

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has disclosed that he dissolved the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) after former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa advised him to do so. Khan made these revelations during an interview with a private news channel on Sunday. He also claimed that Gen Bajwa had no ideology and that the former COAS told him lies. Khan also revealed that a leader from the Middle East had told him a year ago that Bajwa was not with him any longer.

In addition, Khan demanded that caretaker governments in Punjab and KP be abolished, and a new “neutral” interim setup is instated. He suggested that elections could be held in July if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dissolves the National Assembly. However, the government has insisted on conducting elections together in October, citing security concerns and a lack of funds for carrying out the task. The Supreme Court has fixed May 14 as the date for the election to the Punjab Assembly.

PTI to Launch Punjab Election Campaign Amid Uncertainty Over Poll Schedule

0

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is all set to launch its election campaign for Punjab tomorrow, according to PTI Secretary General Asad Umar. Despite uncertainty over the election schedule, the party has finalized a list of 297 candidates after PTI Chairman Imran Khan personally interviewed all candidates from April 6 to 18 to ensure merit in awarding party tickets. However, the ticket allotment has faced criticism from within the party, leading to the formation of a four-member committee to address objections.

The committee includes Musaddiq Abbasi, Ijaz Chaudhary, Rai Hassan Nawaz, and Aoon Abbas, but due to backlash from party workers and supporters, Khan is reportedly considering adding some senior members to decide on the appeals regarding ticket distribution.

The uncertainty surrounding the elections is due to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) waiting for funds from the federal government to conduct the elections. The Supreme Court had ordered the ECP to hold elections in Punjab on May 14 but the government has refused to release funds for the polls, citing rejection by Parliament. The defense ministry has also declined to provide security for the polls due to the security situation. The ministry had filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking it to withdraw its order to hold polls on May 14, but the three-member bench refused to do so.

Despite these uncertainties, PTI is determined to launch its election campaign in Punjab tomorrow. “They (PDM) may not be ready, but we are ready,” tweeted Asad Umar.

PTI Cabinet Members Raised Objections to Controversial Peca Law, Says Shireen Mazari

0

Shireen Mazari, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has disclosed that some members of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s cabinet, including herself, had raised objections to the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Ordinance, 2022. The ordinance made defamation a non-bailable offense with a five-year imprisonment sentence. The ordinance, commonly known as Peca, was first passed by the National Assembly in 2016 when the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was in power. However, President Arif Alvi passed an ordinance making it tougher during the PTI government’s tenure.

The Islamabad High Court invalidated Section 20 of the ordinance in April 2022, which criminalized defamation and drew criticism from digital rights activists. Despite the court’s ruling, PTI members, including Senator Azam Swati, have still fallen victim to the law. Mazari stated in an interview with DawnNewsTV that she had submitted a written objection to Peca, stating that the law would come back to haunt them.

Mazari also expressed her grievances regarding the use of the sedition law, which was invalidated by the Lahore High Court last month. However, cases were registered against Ali Amin and Khan Sahib a day after the law was scrapped. The Peca law had given sweeping powers to the executive, which could be misused against anyone and further curtail freedom of expression in the country, according to the opposition. The legislation allowed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officers to unlock any computer, mobile phone, or other device required for investigating a crime or offense. It also made defamation a punishable offense and stated that parody or satire-based websites and social media accounts could be proceeded against on “spoofing.”

In November 2020, the PTI government framed social media laws under Peca, which drew criticism from digital rights activists, Internet Service Providers of Pakistan, and the Asia Internet Coalition, all of whom had termed the law draconian. President Arif Alvi had promulgated an ordinance to amend Peca in February 2020, a day after the federal cabinet had approved it. The legality of Peca’s Section 20 was already under examination before the IHC at the time.

The amendment to Peca’s Section 20 increased the jail term for defaming any person or institution from three to five years. It also made online public defamation a cognizable and non-bailable offense and defined the complainant as the aggrieved person, his authorized representative, his guardian in case he was a minor, or “a member of the public in respect of a public figure or a holder of public office.” Moreover, the definition of a “person” was expanded to include any company, association, or body of persons whether incorporated or not, institution, organization, authority or any other body established by the government under any law or otherwise.

Opposition leaders and media bodies criticized the government’s move to amend Peca, stating that it was aimed at curbing freedom of expression and silencing the media. The Islamabad High Court declared the law unconstitutional in April 2022 and scrapped its Section 20 that criminalized defamation. The FIA challenged this order in the Supreme Court, but the federal government withdrew the plea mere hours later.

ECP proposes changes to the Elections Act to curtail the president’s authority in election matters

0

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has proposed changes to the Elections Act, 2017, specifically to sections 57-1 and 58, to give itself more power and to curtail the authority of the president in election matters. Currently, section 57-1 states that the president must announce the date or dates of the general elections after consultation with the ECP. The proposed amendment would change this so that the power to announce the date of the poll solely lies with the ECP, removing the president’s role in this matter.

The objective of this amendment is to authorize the ECP as the sole body to announce the date for general elections. In its present form, section 58 allows the commission to make alterations in the Election Programme announced in that notification for the different stages of the election, and the ECP can issue a fresh Election Programme as may be necessary. The proposed amendment will strengthen the role of the commission and allow it to announce the schedule without any interference.

The amendment aims to remove any ambiguity in changing the election program or issuing a new one. The ECP will be able to change the polls program at various stages and give a new election date and new schedule with written reasons. The ECP argues that it is an autonomous body responsible for conducting fair and transparent elections, and the mandate of the ECP to conduct elections should not be subordinated to anyone.

The ECP has prepared an amendment draft to send to the parliamentary affairs secretary and has also sent a letter to the parliamentary affairs ministry mentioning the reasons behind the changes. The letter stated that according to the Constitution, the ECP had to decide whether the circumstances were fit to hold the elections or not. It complained that the recent judgments of the Supreme Court had deprived the commission of exercising the powers enumerated in Article 218-3.

The proposed changes will remove any ambiguity in election matters and give more power to the ECP. The commission has argued that it is an autonomous body that should be able to conduct fair and transparent elections without any interference from outside sources. It remains to be seen whether these proposed changes will be implemented, but they could potentially have significant implications for future elections in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Parliament adopts resolution for simultaneous elections to strengthen federation

0

The joint sitting of Pakistan’s parliament has adopted a resolution urging the holding of general elections for all national and provincial assemblies simultaneously to “strengthen the federation”. The resolution comes after a three-member bench of the Supreme Court declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s order to delay elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa “unconstitutional”. The government has already tabled a bill in both houses of parliament, which was passed in the joint session, to provide funds for general elections. Meanwhile, the PTI has protested against the decision to reject the apex court’s ruling and rejected the government’s move to pass the SC bill aimed at curtailing the powers of the chief justice of Pakistan.

The resolution adopted by Pakistan’s parliament on Monday calls for general elections of all the assemblies to be held simultaneously to ensure political stability and foster unity among the provinces. It argues that holding separate elections in Punjab, which has over 50% of the National Assembly seats, would inevitably impact the outcome of general elections to the National Assembly seats in Punjab, potentially marginalizing the smaller provinces’ role in the federation. The resolutions emphasize the significance of appointing neutral caretaker set-ups to ensure impartiality and fairness during the elections.

This resolution follows a three-member bench of the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Election Commission of Pakistan’s order to delay elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was “unconstitutional”. The court ordered the electoral body to hold elections in the province on May 14 and asked the government to provide funds to the ECP for holding the polls. The ECP had postponed the election in Punjab to October 8, citing a resurgence of terror attacks, a shortage of security personnel, and an unprecedented economic crisis. However, the coalition government rejected the top court’s decision and has already tabled a bill in both houses of parliament to provide funds for general elections.

The PTI has opposed the government’s move and rejected the decision to reject the apex court’s ruling. They claim that the parliament does not have the authority to dismiss a court order. Additionally, the government has passed the SC bill in the joint session of parliament, aiming to curtail the powers of the chief justice of Pakistan. The bill aims to give the power of taking suo motu notice to a three-member committee comprising senior judges, including the chief justice. It also aims to have transparent proceedings in the apex court and includes the right to appeal.

The adoption of the resolution by Pakistan’s parliament for simultaneous elections of all assemblies aims to promote political stability and foster unity among the provinces. However, the PTI’s protest against the decision to reject the apex court’s ruling and the government’s move to pass the SC bill may further escalate the political crisis in the country.

Babar Azam appointed as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team for the New Zealand series

0

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Babar Azam as the captain of the national team for the upcoming limited-overs series against New Zealand. PCB management committee chairman, Najam Sethi, consulted with the team’s potential consultant, Mickey Arthur, before making the appointment. Sethi revealed that Arthur would play a significant role in deciding the leadership of the team going forward.

“I asked Mickey, do you want one captain or two captains for the New Zealand series? After consulting with him, we decided on having one captain for the white-ball format. I told him, when you will come, you can sit with Babar and then decide from there onwards,” Sethi said.

Sethi also sought Arthur’s approval regarding the appointment of some selectors. The PCB will sign a one-year contract initially, and Arthur will be with the Pakistan cricket team for the Asia Cup and the 2023 World Cup.

“As long as Babar is a successful batsman and a successful captain, he will remain captain. If you continue to lose series, people will start questioning your captaincy and other qualities,” he said.

Sethi further confirmed that Babar will lead the team in the upcoming limited-overs series against New Zealand, putting an end to the speculations doing the rounds recently on media regarding the captaincy and selection of certain players.

The PCB has been in the news recently due to its decision to appoint a new coach and captain for the national team. The board has appointed former South African coach Mickey Arthur as the team’s consultant, while Babar Azam has been appointed as the captain for the limited-overs format.

This decision has been met with mixed reactions from fans and experts. While some believe that Babar is the right man for the job, others have questioned his experience and leadership qualities. However, the PCB has made it clear that Babar will remain captain as long as he continues to perform and win games for Pakistan.

The appointment of Mickey Arthur as the consultant is also a step in the right direction for Pakistan cricket. Arthur has a wealth of experience as a coach, having previously coached the South African and Australian cricket teams. He is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Pakistan cricket team and help them improve their performance in international cricket.

The appointment of Babar Azam as the captain and Mickey Arthur as the consultant is a positive step for Pakistan cricket. The team has been struggling in recent times, and this move is expected to help them improve their performance and regain their position as one of the top cricketing nations in the world.

Anime Popularity in Pakistan

0

Anime has been a popular form of entertainment for decades, captivating audiences of all ages and backgrounds across the world. In Pakistan, the popularity of anime has grown exponentially in recent years, with more and more people drawn to its unique style, engaging storylines, and thought-provoking themes.

One of the reasons why Pakistani viewers are drawn to anime is its ability to offer a different perspective on real-life situations. The exaggerated style and dark humor used in anime films and shows make them stand out from other forms of entertainment, while still managing to convey important life lessons.

Characters in anime are often complex and multifaceted, which makes it easy for viewers to relate to them on a deeper level. For example, Naruto, one of the most popular anime shows in Pakistan, teaches viewers the importance of self-love, while Death Note raises questions about the concept of justice.

Another reason why anime is so popular in Pakistan is its ability to tell stories with more depth than other forms of art. Due to the relatively low budget required to produce anime, creators have more freedom to stretch out their stories and focus on character development.

This often results in anime shows with a more philosophical bent, exploring themes such as nihilism, deontology, and the human condition. As a result, many viewers find themselves drawn to the genre for its thought-provoking content.

For digital artists and filmmakers in Pakistan, anime has also proven to be a significant source of inspiration. With only a few animation studios operating in Pakistan, artists and filmmakers have had to find creative ways to incorporate anime’s unique style and themes into their work.

Many of these artists have found a balance between the Western and Japanese tropes, resulting in a hybrid style that combines the best of both worlds.

Anime has become a significant part of Pakistan’s entertainment landscape, capturing the hearts and minds of viewers across the country. Its unique style, engaging storylines, and thought-provoking themes have made it stand out from other forms of entertainment, while its relatively low production costs have made it accessible to creators who might not have had the resources to produce more traditional forms of animation.

As the popularity of anime continues to grow, it is clear that it will continue to be a significant influence on Pakistan’s creative landscape for years to come.

Imran Khan Calls for True Freedom and Justice for His Party Members

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has called upon his party workers to seek justice against the wrongs being committed by the government. Addressing his supporters after Iftar at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore, he urged them to continue their quest for true freedom, or “Haqiqi Azadi”, and said that the nation will never accept slavery.

Khan reminded his supporters about the attack on his house last month and the arrest of party workers. He accused the government of trying to depict them as slaves. “The facilitators have imposed a gang of thieves considering us slaves,” he said. He added that his party members have been subjected to injustices and urged his workers to gear up against them.

Khan spoke about the immense abilities that Allah has blessed humans with and stated that he has learned everything from his life, even though he is not an Islamic scholar. He reminded his supporters that the revolution brought by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ensured freedom, equality, and justice in society.

He also criticized the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, stating that a leader is not afraid and that cowards become people like Nawaz Sharif.

Khan emphasized the importance of a free nation standing up for freedom and stated that enslaved people do not fight for freedom. He pointed out that the Indians did not fight against invading forces who came to conquer India through Afghanistan, as they were already slaves. In contrast, Afghanistan defeated three conquering superpowers.

Khan called for a war of freedom for which the whole nation has to prepare. He urged his party workers to continue fighting against the injustices meted out to his party members.

UN recognizes Pakistan’s Indus Delta and other deltas worldwide for a global convention to ensure their protection

0

The United Nations has recognized Pakistan’s Indus Delta and other deltas around the world for a global convention to ensure their protection against the adverse impacts of climate change and environmental degradation. The move came after a coalition of non-governmental and civil society organizations campaigned for a United Nations Convention for the Conservation of River Deltas (UN-CCRD) to protect deltas worldwide, which are dying due to sea intrusion, sea level rise, droughts, depleting water flows, shrinking creeks and others.

The UN convention aims to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030, including SDG-6 demanding “Clean Water,” SDG-13 “Climate Action,” and SDG-14 “Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources.” The convention’s objectives are to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity among Delta communities and water stakeholders to climate-related hazards and natural disasters through increased knowledge sharing, partnerships, global attention, UN recognition, and community participation.

Each of the world’s deltas possesses varying risks owing to spiking sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion from the oceans, rapidly melting glaciers, increasing dams, and shifting rainfall patterns in the highlands. The UN had accepted that all the world deltas were under threat, and sea-level rise and intrusion were causing damage to soil and water ecosystems. It is not only nature but also the communities, livelihood opportunities, and human lives that are diminishing and demand the world’s response for their protection.

Pakistan’s Indus Delta is shrinking, causing significant impacts on its nature and habitat. The delta’s shrinkage has brought it under the UN radar to create a global convention for all deltas worldwide to ensure their protection. A side event at the UN Water Conference titled “Integrative Highland to Ocean (H2O) Action for Disappearing Deltas: Towards a UN Convention on Conserving River Deltas” was hosted by the African Centre for Climate Actions and Rural Development Initiative (ACCARD) in collaboration with other organizations.

Former Senator and federal minister for information and broadcasting and Chairman of World Environment Forum participated virtually to represent Pakistan in the sideline event, whereas Freeman Elohor Oluowo of ACCARD and Professor Dr. Asim Zia, Director, Institute for Environmental Diplomacy, Vermont physically participated in the session.

The UN’s recognition of Pakistan’s Indus Delta and other deltas worldwide for the global convention to ensure their protection is a positive step towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The shrinking of deltas worldwide is a significant threat to nature and habitat and demands the world’s response for their protection.

The 23-year-old cricketer, who has already made a name for himself in the bowling department, impressed everyone with his batting abilities in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL). He scored a total of 133 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 168.35.

Shaheen has been working hard on his batting skills during the ongoing training camp in Lahore. He believes that his ability to contribute with the bat can help Pakistan win matches in all formats of the game. Shaheen said that he had an interest in batting since his U19 days but never gave it a chance. However, that has changed recently as he did a lot of batting practice during his rehab.

Pakistan will take on New Zealand in a five-match ODI series and a five-match T20I series, starting on April 14. Shaheen is hoping to make an impact with the bat in both formats of the game.

Pakistan’s head coach Misbah-ul-Haq has praised Shaheen’s efforts and said that the team management is backing him to become a better all-rounder. Misbah said that Shaheen’s dedication to improving his batting skills is admirable and that he is showing a lot of promise with the bat.

Shaheen’s commitment to becoming a better all-rounder is a positive sign for Pakistan cricket. The team has struggled in recent times and needs its players to step up and contribute in all departments of the game. Shaheen’s emergence as a genuine all-rounder can only help Pakistan’s cause.

It will be interesting to see how Shaheen performs with the bat in the upcoming series against New Zealand. If he can continue his good form with the bat, it will give Pakistan an added advantage in what is expected to be a closely contested series.

Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet to Bring Election Funding Issue to Parliament Amid Ongoing Tensions with Judiciary

Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet has decided to bring the issue of funding for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for holding elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to Parliament. The decision was taken after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a cabinet meeting to address the political and constitutional crises in the country.

The Supreme Court had ordered the federal government to provide Rs21 billion in funds to the ECP by April 10 and directed the electoral body to submit a report on the matter by April 11. The verdict also stated that the court would give instructions to the relevant authorities if the funds were not provided. However, instead of following the court’s order, the federal cabinet chose to debate the matter in Parliament before approving and issuing funds for the provincial elections.

The cabinet meeting also discussed legal consultations and the coalition government’s strategy in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling that elections in Punjab be held on May 14. The cabinet also deliberated on tabling the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023, which aims to limit the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s powers to take suo motu notice and form benches on his own, in the joint session of Parliament for approval.

The federal cabinet approved the decisions taken by the National Security Committee (NSC) in its meeting on Friday, which included launching a comprehensive operation against terrorists. The coalition government faces off with the judiciary following the Supreme Court’s ruling, and the National Assembly passed a resolution declaring that parliament rejected the court’s verdict regarding the election in Punjab.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan accused the PDM coalition government of calling the NSC meeting to use national security as a pretext for postponing the elections. He also criticized the government for introducing an “unconstitutional bill” on the apex court and passing a National Assembly resolution against the judiciary.

The federal cabinet’s decision to bring the issue of funding for the ECP to Parliament indicates a willingness to address the matter through the proper channels. However, the ongoing tensions between the government and the judiciary could further complicate the situation.

The Shocking Story of Giovanni Vigliotto, the World’s Biggest Bigamist

0

Giovanni Vigliotto, a man from the US, holds the Guinness World Record for having the most bigamous marriages in history. He married over 105 women between 1949 and 1981, without ever getting a divorce. His wives were unaware of each other’s existence, nor did they know about the man they had married.

Vigliotto used fake identities when he proposed to his wives and would decamp with their money and possessions soon after the wedding. He would then sell the items he stole at flea markets, where he would search for his next victim. He married women in 27 different US states and 14 other countries.

His last wife, Sharon Clark, decided to track Vigliotto down herself, which led to his arrest on December 28, 1981. He was charged with bigamy and fraud for marrying Clark while still being married to Patrician Ann Gardiner.

During his trial in 1983, Vigliotto claimed that his real name was Nikolai Peruskov and listed 50 aliases he used while committing fraud. He also gave the names and addresses of his 105 wives. Vigliotto argued that he treated his wives well and that other men in the US should follow his example.

However, he was sentenced to 34 years in prison and fined $336,000. Vigliotto spent the last eight years of his life in Arizona State Prison before passing away in 1991 at the age of 61 due to a brain hemorrhage.

Vigliotto’s story is a shocking reminder of the extent to which some people can go to deceive and exploit others. His actions also highlight the importance of being vigilant and cautious in relationships, especially when it comes to marriage.

While it is true that most people enter into marriage with good intentions, it is essential to take the time to get to know one’s partner and to make sure that they are who they claim to be. Marriage is a significant commitment that should not be taken lightly, and it is crucial to take steps to protect oneself against potential fraud or deception.

Giovanni Vigliotto’s story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of trusting someone without knowing them well. His actions may have been extreme, but they serve as a reminder that people can sometimes be deceptive and manipulative. It is essential to stay vigilant and to take steps to protect oneself from fraud or exploitation in any relationship.

Pakistan to Commence Month-Long Celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of 1973

0

Pakistan is all set to begin a month-long celebration of the Golden Jubilee of its Constitution of 1973 on April 10, 2023. A committee, led by Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, comprising Senators and Members of the National Assembly (MNAs), has prepared a comprehensive program for the celebrations, which will be observed throughout the country.

On the first day of the celebrations, Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf will lay the foundation stone of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973 Memorial at D-Chowk in front of the Parliament House and Parliament Lodges. The Speaker, along with Members of Parliament, will also visit the Memorial of Martyrs of Democracy in the garden of the Parliament House. An exhibition displaying photographs taken at the time of the approval of the 1973 Constitution in the National Assembly will also be visited by the Speaker and Members of Parliament. They will review the draft Constitution of Pakistan in detail in front of the National Assembly Hall.

A national constitutional convention has also been organized in the National Assembly, where different segments of society, including constitutional heads of the provinces, vice-chancellors of universities, women, social and political workers, and students, have been invited to attend.

The celebrations will be aimed at highlighting the importance of the Constitution and its role in the democratic process of the country. The Constitution of Pakistan was adopted on April 10, 1973, and has been the supreme law of the country since then. It provides a framework for the governance of Pakistan, outlining the rights and responsibilities of the citizens, the federal structure of the government, and the powers of its institutions.

The month-long celebrations are a tribute to the Constitution and its role in shaping the country’s democratic history. The celebrations will also serve as an opportunity for the country to reflect on the progress made over the past fifty years, as well as the challenges that lie ahead. It is crucial to remember the importance of a Constitution in a democratic society and the need to uphold its principles in the face of any adversity.

In his statement, Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf emphasized the importance of celebrating national festivals and successes while rising above differences. The celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution will be an excellent opportunity for the country to come together and celebrate its democratic values and achievements.

Pakistani government plans to weaken judiciary’s power with Contempt of Court law amendments

The Pakistani government is planning to amend the Contempt of Court law to avoid legal trouble after the Supreme Court ordered it to provide Rs21 billion in funds to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by April 10 for the Punjab elections. The amendments to Article 204 of the Constitution, which empowers the court to punish any person who disobeys an order or interferes with the court’s process, will be approved by the Parliament. The government aims to remove the provision of contempt law from the Constitution with a two-thirds majority.

The federal cabinet had failed to make a decision for issuing funds to the ECP for the Punjab elections earlier in the day. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a crucial session of the federal cabinet, which decided to expand the scope of consultations for issuing funds to the ECP for the Punjab elections. The cabinet members decided to take the matter to the Parliament and seek its opinion as it is the superior institution besides exhibiting reservations on the SC’s three-member bench’s verdict. The members also agreed on maintaining the supremacy of the Parliament.

The Supreme Court’s three-member bench, comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and Justice Munib Akhtar, declared the ECP’s order postponing the provincial assembly elections until October 8 as unconstitutional and ordered the government to release Rs21 billion funds for elections in Punjab by April 10.

The Election Commission of Pakistan announced the schedule for elections in Punjab, which will be held on May 14. The polling for the Punjab Assembly elections will be held on May 14, 2023, according to the electoral watchdog (ECP) notification. The ECP also withdrew its earlier schedule regarding the holding of general elections in Punjab in October.

The government’s move to amend the Contempt of Court law is being seen as an attempt to weaken the judiciary’s power and circumvent court orders. The government’s inability to provide funds to the ECP for the Punjab elections despite repeated court orders reflects poorly on its commitment to democracy and transparent elections. The Supreme Court’s order to release funds to the ECP is critical for the smooth conduct of elections in Punjab, and any attempt to subvert it will be detrimental to Pakistan’s democratic credentials.

The government should uphold the Constitution’s principles and respect the judiciary’s independence and power. It should provide funds to the ECP as directed by the Supreme Court and ensure free and fair elections in Punjab. The Parliament should carefully consider any amendments to the Constitution and ensure that they do not compromise the judiciary’s autonomy or weaken democracy in Pakistan.

What is the recent news about the President of Pakistan and the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023?

President Dr. Arif Alvi has returned the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023, which curtailed the powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), to the Parliament for reconsideration. He stated that the bill appears to be beyond the competence of Parliament and can be challenged as “colorable legislation.” The bill was approved by both houses of Parliament last month and sent to the President for assent amidst a deepening political and constitutional crisis in the country. The government has now decided to get this bill passed from a joint session of Parliament. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif criticized the President for returning the bill, calling him a worker of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and belittling the office of the President.

Unfortunately, the political and constitutional crisis in Pakistan seems to be deepening with this recent development. The bill in question, the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023, has been a topic of much debate and controversy in the country. The bill aims to curtail the powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, which has raised concerns about the independence of the judiciary and the separation of powers.

President Arif Alvi’s decision to return the bill for reconsideration has been met with mixed reactions from different political parties. While the opposition parties have praised the move, the ruling party has criticized it, accusing the president of being biased toward the opposition.

The Prime Minister’s statement that President Alvi is acting as a worker of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and belittling his office has further escalated tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.

It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold, with the government now planning to get the bill through from a joint session of Parliament. The controversy surrounding the bill and the political and constitutional crisis in the country highlights the challenges of maintaining a balance between different branches of government and ensuring the independence of the judiciary in Pakistan.

US Judge Suspends Approval of Abortion Pill Mifepristone

0

In a ruling that could have a significant impact on abortion access in the United States, a federal judge in Texas has suspended the approval of the abortion pill mifepristone while a legal challenge proceeds. The preliminary injunction, which is set to take effect in one week, was issued by US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who was appointed by Republican President Donald Trump. The case was brought by four anti-abortion groups and four anti-abortion doctors who sued the FDA in November. They argue that the agency used an improper process when it approved mifepristone in 2000 and did not adequately consider the drug’s safety when used by girls under age 18 to terminate a pregnancy.

Mifepristone is part of a two-drug regimen, administered in combination with misoprostol, for medication abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Drugs account for more than half of all abortions in the country. Some abortion providers have said that if mifepristone is unavailable, they would switch to a misoprostol-only regimen for a medication abortion, which is not as effective. It is not yet clear how widely available it would be.

The ruling is likely to inflame the fraught US politics of abortion, which have divided the country since last year’s US Supreme Court ruling that overturned a women’s constitutional right to the procedure. Since the Supreme Court ruled, 12 of the 50 states now ban abortion outright while many others prohibit it after a certain length of pregnancy, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights.

The Biden administration, responding to the lawsuit, had said the drug’s approval was well supported by science, and that the challenge comes much too late. The Justice Department had argued that a ruling in favor of the plaintiffs in Texas would undercut trust in the FDA, the agency that signs off on the safety of food products and drugs, and would increase the burden on surgical abortion clinics already overcrowded with women coming from states that now ban the procedure.

In a seemingly conflicting injunction, a federal judge in Washington state on Friday also issued an order blocking the FDA from making any changes to the current availability of mifepristone. His ruling applied to the 17 states that sued. This conflict could bring the case before the US Supreme Court more quickly.

The ruling in Texas is a blow to abortion rights in the United States and could have far-reaching consequences. The Biden administration has vowed to appeal the decision, and the case will now go to the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which has a conservative reputation, with more than two-thirds of its judges appointed by Republican presidents.

Johnny Depp’s ‘Jeanne Du Barry’ Trailer Drops, ‘Modi’ Set to be Directed by Depp

0

Johnny Depp’s much-anticipated movie “Jeanne Du Barry” has dropped its trailer, a year after his controversial trial with ex-wife Amber Heard. The historical drama is about Jeanne Vaubernier, a young working-class woman who uses her intelligence and allure to climb the social ladder, becoming the favorite of King Louis XV. They fall madly in love, and Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.

The trailer looks promising, but unfortunately, the makers have not yet decided on a US release date. The trailer also does not include English subtitles, which might disappoint some viewers.

“Jeanne Du Barry” stars Johnny Depp alongside Melvil Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory, India Hair, and Benjamin Lavernhe. Fans of Depp will be thrilled to know that he is also ready to direct a movie called “Modi,” based on the play “Modigliani” by Dennis McIntyre. The film will focus on the Italian-born painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani in Paris in 1916.

In a recent press release, Depp expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored and truly humbled to bring to the screen. It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph – a universally human story all viewers can identify with.”

Depp has had a successful career as an actor, and it will be exciting to see him take on the role of director. Fans will have to wait and see when “Jeanne Du Barry” and “Modi” will hit theaters, but with Depp at the helm, both movies are sure to be worth the wait.

Baidu Sues Apple and App Developers Over Fake Ernie Bot Apps on App Store

0

Chinese search engine giant Baidu has filed lawsuits against both Apple and “relevant” app developers over the availability of fake copies of its Ernie bot app on Apple’s app store. Launched last month, the Ernie bot is powered by artificial intelligence and has been touted as China’s closest answer to the US-developed chatbot ChatGPT. In a statement posted on its official “Baidu AI” WeChat account, the company said that it had lodged lawsuits in Beijing Haidian People’s Court against the developers behind the counterfeit applications of its Ernie bot and the Apple company.

Baidu has warned that the Ernie bot is only available to users who have received access codes and that until the company makes an official announcement, any Ernie app that is available on the App Store or other stores is fake. The company also posted a photograph of its court filing on WeChat. Despite Baidu’s warning, a Reuters search on Saturday found that there were still at least four apps bearing the Chinese-language name of the Ernie bot, all of which were fake, on Apple’s App Store.

The availability of counterfeit apps on Apple’s app store is not a new problem. In the past, there have been numerous cases of fake and potentially harmful apps being made available in the store. Apple has been criticized for its lack of oversight and regulation of the App Store, particularly in relation to the approval process for apps.

Baidu’s decision to take legal action against Apple and app developers over the availability of fake copies of its Ernie bot app is a sign of the growing concern over the proliferation of counterfeit apps on the App Store. The Chinese company is seeking to protect its intellectual property and prevent users from being misled into downloading fake apps that could potentially harm their devices or steal their personal information.

In recent years, China has become a major player in the development of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. Companies like Baidu are at the forefront of this trend, developing advanced AI-powered applications like the Ernie bot that are designed to provide users with an engaging and interactive experience. However, the availability of counterfeit apps on the App Store threatens to undermine the legitimacy of these companies and their products and could harm their ability to attract users and investors.

Baidu’s decision to take legal action against Apple and app developers over the availability of fake copies of its Ernie bot app highlights the growing concern over the proliferation of counterfeit apps on the App Store. The Chinese company is seeking to protect its intellectual property and prevent users from being misled into downloading fake apps that could potentially harm their devices or steal their personal information. The availability of counterfeit apps on the App Store is a problem that Apple needs to address, in order to ensure the safety and security of its users and the legitimacy of the apps that are available on its platform.

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has signed a loan agreement worth $240 million with Pakistan to support the Mohmand Multipurpose Dam Project, aimed at promoting sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project is co-financed by the SFD, OPEC, Islamic Development Bank, and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.

The project is expected to enhance water and food security and improve the standard of living for people living in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where almost 80% of the population resides in rural areas. The dam will also boost the region’s socioeconomic development by creating employment opportunities and reducing poverty levels.

With the use of renewable energy sources, the project is expected to generate 800 MW of electricity production capacity, contributing to Pakistan’s energy security. The storage of 1.6 million cubic meters of water will support sustainable agricultural practices, enable irrigation of 6,773 hectares of new land, and increase the total cropping area from 1,517 hectares to 9,227 hectares in the province, facilitating agricultural activities.

During the agreement-signing ceremony, the SFD CEO emphasized the strong developmental ties between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and highlighted the significance of joint cooperation between development funds.

The loan agreement is a significant step towards achieving the SDGs and promoting sustainable development in Pakistan. The project will not only enhance the country’s energy security but also support sustainable agricultural practices, enabling the country to produce more food and reduce poverty levels. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the standard of living for people living in rural areas, providing them with employment opportunities and improving their socioeconomic conditions.

The Mohmand Multipurpose Dam Project is an excellent example of how development funds can collaborate to support sustainable development and promote energy transition in developing countries. The project is expected to serve as a model for future projects aimed at achieving the SDGs in Pakistan and other developing countries.

Tesla Faces Class Action Lawsuit over Alleged Privacy Violations

Electric carmaker Tesla is facing a class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accusing the company of violating the privacy of its customers. The lawsuit was filed by a San Francisco resident and Tesla owner, Henry Yeh, who alleges that Tesla employees were able to access videos and images recorded by customers’ car cameras for their personal entertainment.

The lawsuit comes after Reuters reported that groups of Tesla employees privately shared via an internal messaging system, sometimes highly invasive videos and images recorded by customers’ car cameras between 2019 and 2022. The complaint filed by Yeh alleges that Tesla employees were able to access these images and videos for their “tasteless and tortious entertainment” and “the humiliation of those surreptitiously recorded.”

Yeh’s attorney, Jack Fitzgerald, stated that his client was outraged at the idea that Tesla’s cameras could be used to violate his family’s privacy, which the California Constitution scrupulously protects. He added that “Tesla needs to be held accountable for these invasions and for misrepresenting its lax privacy practices to him and other Tesla owners.”

The lawsuit alleges that Tesla’s conduct is “particularly egregious” and “highly offensive.” It further states that Yeh is filing the complaint against Tesla on behalf of himself, similarly-situated class members, and the general public. The complaint said the prospective class would include individuals who owned or leased a Tesla within the past four years.

According to Reuters, some Tesla employees could see customers “doing laundry and really intimate things. We could see their kids,” citing a former employee. The lawsuit claims that parents’ interest in their children’s privacy is one of the most fundamental liberty interests society recognizes.

The lawsuit is seeking to enjoin Tesla from engaging in its wrongful behavior, including violating the privacy of customers and others, and to recover actual and punitive damages. Tesla has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

The incident is the latest in a series of privacy concerns that have plagued technology companies. In recent years, companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon have faced criticism and legal action over privacy violations. As technology continues to advance and companies collect more data, privacy concerns are likely to remain a major issue for consumers and regulators.
