Pakistan to Roll Out 5G by Mid-Year Amid Financial Hurdles

The government aims to introduce 5G services in Pakistan by mid-2025, according to Parliamentary Secretary for IT Sabreen Ghori.

Speaking in the National Assembly, she also assured lawmakers that internet speed would improve across the country in the coming months.

Addressing concerns over connectivity issues, Ghori acknowledged that multiple factors contribute to slow internet speeds.

Lawmakers, including Agha Rafiullah, raised concerns about inconsistent internet performance, with users often struggling to access basic services.

Shagufta Jumani echoed similar sentiments, referring to Bilawal Bhutto’s remarks questioning the frequent disruptions in internet services.

However, the rollout of 5G comes with significant challenges. A 2024 report by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) highlighted financial obstacles in the transition.

While broadband penetration is increasing, investment in the telecom sector has fallen sharply from $1.6 billion in 2021–22 to $765 million in 2023–24.

The PTA report further pointed out that telecom operators may hesitate due to the substantial capital investment required for 5G infrastructure.

With declining average revenue per user in dollar terms, the financial burden of 5G adoption remains a key concern for the industry.
