Imran Riaz Khan’s Exile: The Struggle for Free Speech in Pakistan

0

Imran Riaz Khan’s journey from a respected journalist to an exiled figure highlights the challenges faced by media professionals in Pakistan, emphasizing the dangers of silencing free speech.

Imran Riaz Khan is a famous Pakistani journalist and YouTuber. Due to his strong stance on country problems and commitment to investigative journalism, he is a popular media personality.

He has been a critical voice against the military and state for a long time. However, because of his straightforwardness, the government tried to suppress him. His transition from a distinguished journalist to an exiled fugitive exemplifies one of the major dilemmas facing today’s Pakistani journalists.

Speaking freely is a right recognised all over the world, although this right is not exercised the same way everywhere. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, and this is protected in the constitutional laws all over the world.

However, this does not mean they have it easy. Even though media professionals work in democracies, they often experience political stress, market censorship, and threats from radical groups.

In contrast, countries with repressive regimes such as Pakistan often silence dissenting voices through stringent regulatory measures against the press and dissenting opinions. To openly discuss official measures, corruption, and political issues is often met with a backlash. Journalists who challenge the norm may get imprisoned or harassed.

Imran Riaz Khan

Did Imran Riaz Khan Have Freedom of Speech in Pakistan? In Pakistan, the constitution elevates freedom of expression, but its practice is often curtailed by the authorities. Imran Riaz Khan’s right to free speech is frequently obstructed.

He was charged with many cases for speaking openly against the government and security agencies. What made Imran Riaz Khan go down? He was taken into guardianship and faced strict limitations on his freedom of expression.

Despite these challenges, he continued to work through digital means, especially YouTube and social media, to reach his sympathisers. Still, facing pressure from the authorities made it insolvable for him to continue his work inside the country, eventually forcing him to leave Pakistan.

Do Journalists in developed countries face similar challenges? Journalism in developed nations like the US as well as Europeans get more protection-less free choice but not entirely free of risks.

In America, media people often come across differences in political opinion. Alongside misinformation juggernauts and money interest in media narrative.

They are not usually forced to leave the country like in countries with harsher regimes but may still find themselves facing lawsuits, online harassment, and falling prey to physical attacks in dire cases.

In Pakistan, intelligencers have lost their lives or have been kidnapped for doing their jobs; similarly, it is not always safe for media professionals. However, in the West, the working terrain for media professionals is generally considered safe.

Similarly, when it comes to media professionals, there is hardly any country in the West that has given them such freedom.

What made Imran Riaz Khan leave? Imran Riaz Khan’s choice to exit Pakistan wasn’t taken smoothly. His Escape Came After Being Released After Arrest. Imran Riaz Khan Addresses Hard Life and Suffering, Which Show Internal and Physical Suffering.

Imran Riaz Khan

Imran Riaz Khan was facing continuous legal and political pressure in Pakistan due to false accusations, which led to his exile. Staying in Pakistan would mean more victimisation and possibly another arrest, his previous experiences indicate.

The forced displacement of journalists, especially Imran Riaz Khan, is a colossal blow to democracy, as democracy without a free press that holds a critical eye to power and promotes accountability is fake democracy.

Suppressing the media destroys free speech, suppresses discussion, and limits citizens from using a wide range of information. This, in turn, weakens popular institutions, since a free press’s absence reduces responsibility and allows corruption to flow freely.

Where independent journalism is stifled and state-controlled propaganda indications, determining the course of public perception irrespective of objective verity. And the targeting of one journalist has a nipping effect where other journalists will be hysterical to cover important stories, and this leads to the silencing of the popular process.

Imran Riaz Khan’s trip from new enlightenment to expatriated verity- seeker highlights the obstacles that media professionals in Pakistan are brazened by. His case exposes the growing limits on free expression—and how shutting up smart people threatens the republic.

But although he may no longer be physically present in Pakistan, for a legacy to be engaged with him, while his voice remains strong, it refuses to be silenced, challenging at every turn narrative, exposing realities others sweat to bandy about.

Imran Riaz Khan

His story is both relief and caution about the costs of speaking truth to power in repressive environments. It is how we continue to protect ourselves as a republic and make sure freedom of expression is a basic right of all Pakistanis, not just in Pakistan but in any part of the world.

Sindh Sports Minister Criticizes PCB’s Talent Selection, Demands Equal Opportunities for Players

0

Provincial Sports Minister in Sindh, Sardar Mohammad Bux Mahar, has criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for failing to provide equal opportunities to players from Sindh.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, Mahar accused the PCB of favoritism, claiming that it benefits players from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while neglecting the talent emerging from Sindh.

The provincial minister further emphasized that Sindh has consistently produced exceptional talent in various sports, especially cricket, and ignoring these players is both flawed and marginalizing.

“Cricket is not just about Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—Karachi also has a wealth of talent. If our players aren’t recognized based on merit, we will set up our own board,” Mahar stated.

Mahar also reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting the cricket board for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with Karachi set to host key matches.

The much-awaited 50-over marquee event is scheduled to start on February 19,with the high-octane clash between the defending champions Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi.

The provincial government has promised to ensure a grand reception for this prestigious tournament.

Sri Lankan all-rounder plays two matches in two countries within 24 hours

Sri Lankan all-rounder, Dasun Shanaka, showcased the demanding schedule of modern cricketers by featuring in back-to-back matches across two countries within 24 hours.

After playing a crucial first-class game for his club SSC in Sri Lanka, the 33-year-old immediately traveled to the UAE to participate in the ongoing ILT20.

Shanaka played a pivotal role in the fight for SSC against relegation, scoring a century to keep the hope of the club alive.

Soon after completing his innings, he boarded a flight from Colombo to Dubai, arriving just in time to join Dubai Capitals for their ILT20 match against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.

Despite the hectic travel, Shanaka made an impact, smashing 34 runs off just 12 balls to help his team register their highest total of the season.

In the ILT20 match, the unbeaten 93 from David Warner set a strong base for Dubai Capitals, and then the quick runs from Shanaka boosted their total.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder, who recently captained the national team, continues to be a sought-after player in global T20 leagues.

Dubai Capitals are currently in fourth place on the points table, winning five games and losing four.

Transforming Child Health: How Community Incentives Drive Breakthroughs in Pakistan

0

A groundbreaking study published in The Lancet Global Health reveals how community-driven incentives can greatly improve child health outcomes in rural Pakistan. The Community Mobilization and Community Incentivization- (CoMIC) trial, conducted by researchers from Aga Khan University’s Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD), offers a transformative model for addressing preventable illnesses such as childhood diarrhoea and pneumonia, which remain leading causes of death among children under five.

The CoMIC trial is based on the recognition that behaviour change interventions should ensure active community engagement and adapt context-specific strategies to facilitate change (bottom-up approach for sustainable improvement). When tied to tangible short-term collective benefits that address complex child health issues, such an approach may prove particularly useful. The study examined the impact of two interventions: community mobilization alone and mobilization combined with collective, conditional, non-cash incentives. It involved 48 clusters spread over a rural area in Sindh province.

The findings revealed significant improvements in child health indicators in incentivized communities. Compared to the control groups, they included an 80% higher breastfeeding rate, a 50% rise in the use of oral rehydration treatments, a 30% improvement in cleanliness habit and a 30% higher immunization rate. Dr. Jai K. Das, Assistant Director at IGHD and lead author of the study explained: “The study shows that when communities are actively engaged, empowered, and take charge to set their own priorities, it leads to extraordinary results. The ability to choose non-cash rewards, such as water pumps or sanitation facilities, fostered a sense of ownership and accountability, driving sustainable behavior changes.”

In Pakistan, the poorest populations are disproportionately affected by the substantial discrepancies in access to necessary health services.  Less than one-third of rural households have access to adequate sanitation, while the nation’s immunization rates are still at 66%. The CoMIC trial’s innovative approach—Conditional Collective Community-Based Incentives (C3I)—not only improved health behaviours but also encouraged communities to co-invest in long-term solutions. The findings showed that communities are more likely to invest when they are empowered to decide on incentives. This was evident by the fact that contributions including labour, land and supplies resulted in a cost-sharing rate of 36% above the 25% target. Along with encouraging sustainability and ownership, these community-driven incentives also had a number of positive effects such as better health outcomes, increased community well-being and improved sanitation.

Dr. Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Founding Director of IGHD, emphasized the broader implications of the trial: “This trial demonstrates the potential of community-driven solutions in achieving scalable health improvements. It is a model that can be adapted in other low- and middle-income countries to address inequities and save lives.”

The CoMIC trial emphasizes how crucial it is to use community ownership and engagement to promote sustainable health improvements. Policymakers and organizations can adopt the Conditional Collective Community-Based Incentives model to address pressing public health challenges, particularly in low-resource settings.

Scaling this approach could address vaccine resistance, improve sanitation, and enhance child health outcomes across diverse contexts. The framework offers a practical and transparent mechanism for delivering community-level benefits while fostering accountability and long-term investment in health infrastructure. Dr. Jai K. Das highlighted the broader applicability of the model, stating, “For a country like Pakistan, this approach could also be tested for other health challenges, such as malnutrition and polio vaccine hesitancy. Additionally, this strategy ensures transparency in fund utilization at the micro level, making it a viable option for broader adoption.”

The CoMIC trial findings mark a significant step forward in global health innovation by offering a scalable and sustainable strategy to reduce child morbidity and mortality. It is recommended that the CoMIC model be explored by policymakers, donors, and global health organizations as a means of addressing health inequities through community ownership and collective action. Stakeholders may improve child health outcomes over the long run and encourage long-term community investment and accountability by giving priority to interventions that have tangible, immediate impacts.

Abhishek Sharma Makes History as India Defeats England

0

India’s left handed batter Abhishek Sharma showcased immense power hitting in the fifth and final T20I against England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Dismantling the opposition’s bowling attack. His aggressive approach in the powerplay provided India with a commanding start after England captain Jos Buttler opted to field first.

Abhishek reached his maiden T20I century in just 37 balls marking the second fastest hundred for India in the format. The record for the fastest century remains with Rohit Sharma who scored a hundred off 35 deliveries against Sri Lanka in 2017 at Indore. Previously Sanju Samson held the second spot having registered a 40 ball century against Bangladesh in Hyderabad.

Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek also registered the second quickest half century by an Indian in T20 surpassing KL Rahul’s 18 ball fifty against Scotland. The fastest T20I half century for an Indian still belongs to Yuvraj Singh who struck a 12 ball fifty against England in the inaugural T20 World Cup. The global record for the fastest T20I half century is held by Dipendra Singh Airee of Nepal who achieved the milestone in just 9 deliveries.

Despite an early setback when Sanju Samson was dismissed for 16 runs in the second over by Mark Wood. Abhishek remained undeterred. He particularly targeted Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton displaying fearless stroke play against their express pace. Throughout the series Abhishek faced 32 deliveries from Jofra Archer scoring 60 runs at an impressive strike rate of 187.40. His aggressive intent was evident as he frequently charged down the wicket countering the pace of Archer and Mark Wood with remarkable confidence.

Samson on the other hand began the match with a six off Jofra Archer pulling a bouncer for a maximum. However his struggles against short pitched deliveries continued as he was dismissed in an identical manner for the fifth time in the series. Across the five matches he managed only 35 runs off 29 short balls repeatedly getting caught in the deep.
Ahead of the match England made a solitary change bringing in Mark Wood in place of Saqib Mahmood. While India replaced Arshdeep Singh with experienced pacer Mohammed Shami.

India had already secured the series making this final encounter a dead rubber. However Abhishek Sharma’s record breaking innings ensured a thrilling contest leaving the English bowlers with no answers to his power hitting.

Karachi Missing Children Case: Police Focus Search Near Lyari

0

Karachi police have intensified their search for two missing children from the Garden area after sniffer dogs identified a potential location near Lyari Kushti Mosque.

Officials stated that the sniffer dogs, brought from Hyderabad, led investigators to a specific spot and stopped, prompting authorities to focus their efforts there.

Further details reveal that an eyewitness also reported seeing the two missing children in the same vicinity, strengthening suspicions.

Last week, it was reported that two children, identified as five-year-old Aliyan and six-year-old Ali Raza, went missing from the Garden area in Karachi on January 14.

The incident surfaced when Zainab returned from work to find her son, Aliyan, missing. She learned he was last seen playing outside with Ali Raza, and both had not returned.

An FIR was lodged, and investigations began. CCTV footage showed a man and a woman taking the children toward Lyari on a motorcycle, but poor quality hindered identification.

An SSP-led committee conducted geofencing and search operations in Garden and Lyari, but no significant leads emerged before the sniffer dogs identified the location.

Following this development, the provincial police expanded their operation to the nearby Lyari River, a challenging area to comb due to its marshy terrain.

To aid the investigation, heavy machinery has been deployed to clear sections of the river, allowing officials to conduct a more thorough inspection.

Authorities have assured that the search operation is ongoing, with all possible leads being pursued to recover the two missing children.

The Green Shirts will kick off their campaign against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi in the tournament’s opening game on February 19. They will then face India and Bangladesh on February 23 and 27, respectively.

The Role of Foreign Direct Investment in Pakistan’s Economic Growth.

0

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) refers to investments made by individualities or companies from one country into business gambles in another. This investment generally involves establishing new enterprises, expanding being businesses, or acquiring power stakes in foreign companies. FDI plays a pivotal part in global profitable growth and request integration.

FDI is described as investment by a company or an individual of one country into business interests in another country. Usually, this investment involves gaining new business ventures, growing current businesses, or gaining ownership in overseas enterprises.

It may come in many forms, which include wholly owned subsidiaries, joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions. Due to energetic management and sustained engagement, FDI is unique from portfolio investment. The government frequently supports foreign direct investment to enhance economic growth and generate more jobs.

FDI is divided into two categories, which are:

  1. Inward FDI
  2. Outward FDI

Inward FDI is those that involve foreign investors investing in the domestic economy of the country, and outward FDI is those that involve home enterprises expanding overseas or abroad. These investments play an important role in global unification and foster economic interlinkage between countries. Conversely, investors should also consider the regularity issues and political volatility before investing.
Impact of FDI
For developing nations that may not have access to domestic capital markets, foreign direct investment (FDI) serves as a vital source of foreign capital. FDI is a necessary driver for many countries, such as India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates. In India, FDI flows into many sectors, including information technology, retail, and telecommunications. The UAE evaluates investments in real estate, finance, and tourism. In the USA, the investments are drawn to industries like real estate, technology, and energy. While the UK sees investments in sectors like pharmaceuticals, financial services, and manufacturing.

FDI has several impacts. Excessive dependence on foreign investment may increase economic vulnerability although it can stimulate economic growth and employment creation. Moreover, if FDI is not managed properly, it can cause disparity of income and exploitation of local resources. However, strategic use of foreign direct investment (FDI) may substantially improve global marketability and improve a nation’s economic standing.

The major part of Pakistan’s economic development relies on foreign direct investment (FDI); technology, money, and experience are provided by it. In the financial year 2024, FDI climbed 17% to $1.9 billion from $1.62 billion the year before.

Hong Kong elevated their stake to $358.5 million from $250 million. China continues to be the biggest financier in FY2024 with $568 million, down from $692 million in FY2023. Furthermore, the United States ($137 million), the United Kingdom ($268 million), and Singapore ($100 million) are the other renowned investors.
FDI
In the first quarter of financial year 2025, FDI increased from $520 million to 48%, $771 million. China made a substantial contribution by contributing 52% or $404 million of the entirely foreign direct investment acquired this quarter.

In FY2024, with $799.9 million, a slight amount from $898.5 million in FY2023, the largest amount continues to be received by the electricity industry. In the previous year, the oil and gas exploration industry increased to $303.6 million from $137 million. However, in the financial sector, the investment decreased to $208 million, unlike $276 million in the previous financial year.

The Pakistani government developed the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to promote foreign direct investment boost. By serving as a “single window” for stakeholders and endorsing collaboration between government agencies. This organization aims to accelerate investment procedures and illustrate foreign investment.

Ultimately, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Hong Kong all make significant investments in Pakistan, although China remains to be the country’s top supplier of FDI. This investment’s primary recipients are the oil, gas, and power industries, which shows the country’s key emphasis on developing an energy framework.

Investments are extended across a number of sectors in Pakistan, all of which contribute to the nation’s profitable growth and progress.

Stock Market A main point for fiscal commitments, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) draws both original and foreign investment. Organizations use stock immolation to produce capital in colorful disciplines, similar as finance, energy, and manufacturing.

Construction Because of structure and metropolitan development, the construction sector receives a lot of investment. The construction sedulity is told by real estate formulators and massive systems like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Information Technology (IT) The IT assiduity is raising finances for startups and software development and growing fleetly. For both domestic and overseas investors, because of government prices and expert training, it is a desirable assiduity.

Manufacturing CPEC’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs) plump foreign direct investment (FDI) and artificial development. Pakistan’s frugality explosively relies on investments in manufacturing, specifically in the disciplines of fabrics, motors, and pharmaceuticals.

Collectively these industries impact Pakistan’s economic environment and present an array of chances for investors aiming to broaden and make money.
Role of FDI
Pakistan has seen a positive trend lately in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). FDI grown by 17% to $1.9 billion, up from $1.62 billion to $1.9 billion the prior year. In the initial quarter of fiscal year 2025 this development continued with a totaling $771 million,48% rise to $520 million in the identical time frame last year. China remains top investor, providing $568 million in fiscal year 2024 and $404 million in the initial quarter of fiscal year 2025. Utmost of the capital was drawn by the power sectoracquiring$ 800 million in financial time 2024. These advancements demonstrate expanding investor confidence in Pakistan’s economic policies and investment climate.

CM Maryam Nawaz Minority Card: Bridges or Walls

0

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz introduced Minority Cards, boosting the minority welfare budget by 200% and offering PKR 10,500 every three months to 50,000 households. Detractors claim this approach promotes division, supporting universal welfare instead of identity-focused policies to achieve genuine inclusivity.

The Chief Minister of Punjab, Pakistan, Maryam Nawaz, during her speech at the event titled ‘Minority Card Issuance Ceremony,‘ expressed to the minorities in attendance that upon becoming Prime Minister, she declared,

“minorities are the crown of my head.”

According to the identification of minorities goes beyond being labeled non-Muslim; rather, their identification is rooted in being true Pakistanis. She expressed her satisfaction that a deserving individual, Ramesh Singh Arora, the first Pakistani Sikh minister, had received his rightful recognition.

In addition,, she conveyed that her father always advised her against using the term ‘minorities’ for these communities in Pakistan. While they may be smaller in number compared to other religions, they are not lesser in Pakistan or as human beings; they hold equality. She extended her gratitude to Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, his team, and the Bank of Punjab for their support in creating and implementing the card.

Overview of Minority Card Distribution and Financial Assistance

Additionally, she revealed that the budget allocated for minorities has been raised by 200 percent. Upon opening applications, they received nearly 100,000 submissions from across Pakistan, leading to the issuance of Minority Cards to 50,000 families. Every three months, these families will receive 10,500 PKR to assist with their needs, and this number is expected to rise to 75,000 families in the future. She stated,

“These 10,500 PKR are not mere funds; they are a gift from Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and myself.”

Furthermore, she noted,

“Dear minorities, during your festivals in Pakistan, we not only aim to safeguard your places but also to adorn them. Due to this, we have elevated the grant from 10,000 to 15,000, with the aim of making further increases in the future.”

In her final statements, she noted, “My beloved brothers, sisters, and elders, your health, safety, and progress are incredibly significant to me. I wish for you to realize that you are just as important to Pakistan as I am and as every other citizen is. As a result, we have raised the grant from 10,000 to 15,000, with intentions for additional increments.”

In her closing remarks, she underscored, “My dear brothers, sisters, and elders, your well-being, security, and progress are of utmost importance to me. I want you to understand that you are as integral to Pakistan as I am and as all other citizens are. You are safe and secure in this nation, and I am dedicated to creating a safe environment for you.”

She wrapped up by acknowledging that events like the Jaranwala incident should never occur and reassured them that their safety is her duty.

Should Minority Cards Be Issued in Pakistan? A Comparative Analysis

As the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz introduced minority cards, but does a democratic nation like Pakistan—or any democratic nation—truly require a minority card? Should minority cards even be issued at all? If the response is affirmative, then why do other democracies such as the United States, England, and Singapore not have minority cards? If these nations utilize such cards, how do they function? Conversely, if these countries lack minority cards, what rationale supports the Chief Minister of Punjab implementing them in Pakistan? Minority cards and quota systems are unnecessary—much like in several other democratic nations, including the United States, Singapore, and England, which emphasize merit-based systems rather than choices influenced by identity and affiliation.

These countries reject minority cards or quota systems as they emphasize equal opportunities over specific outcomes. They believe that all individuals should have the same opportunity to attain success. For example, nations like Sweden and Finland prioritize equal opportunity by providing universal access to top-notch education and healthcare services. In Pakistan, minority groups are systematically marginalized, yet they do not require a quota system or minority identification cards. At first, members of minority communities may view these cards as advantageous. Still, over time, they may come to feel a sense of exclusion and separateness, perpetually reminded of their “minority” status. This approach is incompatible with a democratic society. A Chief Minister should not represent just one specific community—they ought to advocate for all citizens rather than prioritize one particular group.

Equality in Pakistan

Inclusive Policies, Not Identity Cards

Inclusive Policies, Not Identity CardsThe issuance of minority cards by the government mirrors the colonial-era tactic of divide-and-rule, reminiscent of the Hindu-Muslim rifts from the time of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. British colonial strategies fostered such divisions, and this initiative appears to replicate that model. Minority cards are not an effective remedy. A Chief Minister is the leader of the whole state, regardless of caste or religion. The optimal approach would be to enhance facilities nationwide, making sure that Muslims, Christians, and other communities utilize the same areas for dining, healthcare, and public services, without any differentiation among them.

Genuine brotherhood can only thrive if all groups are treated uniformly, rather than implementing separate identity-based cards. For instance, when Imran Khan launched the Sahulat Cards, he did not indicate that they were intended for Muslims, Christians, or any specific religious group—he merely mentioned that they were for all deserving Pakistanis The Benazir Income Support Program was created not exclusively for Muslims; it was set up for all inhabitants of Pakistan. Initiatives like this foster social cohesion within the community. Conversely, the minority cards introduced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz are anticipated to incite conflict and division within society, potentially increasing tensions among different communities.

Gaza Ceasefire Update, Ceasefire Nears Implementation

0

The Gaza ceasefire agreement, a landmark deal aimed at halting ongoing hostilities, is poised for implementation by the end of the weekend. With final preparations underway, the agreement has garnered cautious optimism from international observers.

John Kirby, the White House National Security Advisor, provided an update on the progress of the ceasefire during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday evening. Kirby expressed confidence in the deal’s readiness:

John Kirby
John Kirby

We are confident these implementing details can be hammered out and that the deal will move forward this weekend.

Despite the complexities of the negotiations, Kirby assured that all critical parameters have been finalized and that the remaining logistical challenges have been resolved.

A pivotal aspect of the agreement is the Israeli cabinet’s scheduled vote on Saturday. This vote will officially ratify the terms, paving the way for implementation.

Agreement Points Include:

  • Hamas will release Israeli hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
  • Israel is expected to begin a phased withdrawal of its forces from Gaza as part of the truce terms.

Kirby emphasized the steady progress of the agreement, stating:

“All the parameters have been agreed to. We’ve ironed out these last bit of details that needed to be flattened out and fixed. We believe we’re on a good path here to start implementation by the end of the weekend.”

He added that there are currently no indications of derailment, suggesting that the deal is set to proceed as planned.

Global Reactions:

  • Many international leaders and organizations have praised the efforts to de-escalate tensions and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
  • Critics have raised concerns about the potential fragility of the agreement, noting the history of failed ceasefires in the region.

While the ceasefire marks a significant step forward, substantial challenges remain. These include:

  • Decades of conflict and mistrust between the parties may hinder long-term success.
  • Gaza’s extensive humanitarian crisis requires sustained international support to ensure recovery and stability.
  • Ensuring compliance with the agreement will necessitate robust international oversight.

Gaza’s Children: Eyes Set on a Brighter Tomorrow Amid the Chaos

The Gaza–Israel ceasefire, if successfully implemented, could serve as a foundation for broader peace efforts in the region. However, its success will depend on the commitment of all parties involved and the continued support of the international community.

Gaza Ceasefire Agreement January 2025, Qatar

0

The Gaza–Israel ceasefire agreement, finalized in January 2025, represents a critical effort to end the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This agreement was brokered through the collaborative efforts of Qatar and Egypt, with substantial backing from the United States.

The Gaza Strip, also known simply as Gaza, is a small territory located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea; it is the smaller of the two Palestinian territories, the other being the West Bank, that make up the State of Palestine.
The Gaza Strip, also known simply as Gaza, is a small territory located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Gaza Strip has been a focal point of tension and aggression between Israel and Hamas for years, characterized by cycles of violence and fragile ceasefires. The latest escalation, beginning in late 2023, witnessed rocket attacks from Gaza and revengeful airstrikes by Israel. This conflict led to severe humanitarian consequences, including hundreds of civilian casualties, significant displacement and the destruction of critical infrastructure.

Terms of the Gaza Ceasefire:

The agreement, structured in a phased manner, aims to foster stability and trust between the conflicting parties, everything included:

  • Hamas agreed to release Israeli hostages.
  • In parallel, Israel committed to freeing Palestinian prisoners and gradually withdrawing its military forces from Gaza.
  • The truce allows for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, including medical supplies, food, and reconstruction materials.
  • International organizations, supervised by the United Nations, are tasked with overseeing aid distribution to prevent misuse.
  • An international monitoring body, involving representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations, will ensure adherence to the agreement.
  • Mechanisms for reporting and addressing violations are also included.
  • The international community welcomed the ceasefire as a pivotal step toward peace. The United Nations emphasized the need for long-term solutions to the broader Israeli–Palestinian conflict. While many expressed relief at the cessation of hostilities, skepticism about the durability of the agreement persisted among affected communities. Advocacy organizations called for sustained efforts to address war crimes and ensure accountability for all sides.

Decades of mistrust between Israel and Hamas could impede the agreement’s implementation. Internal dynamics within both Gaza and Israel might influence adherence to the terms. Rebuilding Gaza and addressing the extensive humanitarian crisis will require continued international commitment and resources.

The Gaza–Israel ceasefire agreement offers a moment of hope amidst a history of conflict. While the path to lasting peace remains fraught with challenges, the agreement underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement and international cooperation in resolving one of the world’s most enduring conflicts.

The two-day event, brought together a distinguished lineup of both international and national experts who engaged in discussions on transformative advancements in surgical care.

Held under the theme, “Beyond the Scalpel: Quality Care and Patient Safety,” this year’s conference highlighted a strong focus on improving surgical outcomes and ensuring patient safety. As surgical practices continue to evolve, it is essential for healthcare professionals to stay updated on the latest advancements that can positively impact patient outcomes. The event’s sessions delved into surgical innovation, patient-centered care, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies.

Global experts from prestigious institutions such as University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin engaged with attendees through interactive sessions that promoted collaboration and networking, creating an invaluable forum for surgical professionals, researchers, and educators to exchange knowledge and ideas. The sessions covered a wide range of thought-provoking topics, including the intersection of climate, aviation, and surgery, the challenges of maintaining quality within private healthcare systems, and the leadership perspectives on implementing quality initiatives. Discussions also explored the roles of accredited bodies, the importance of collaboration in driving healthcare innovation, and strategies for decarbonizing healthcare centers.

Dr Saleem Islam, Chair of the Department of Surgery, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “Every year, we strive to make the Conference bigger and better. This year’s theme reflects our department’s commitment to providing cutting-edge, high-quality patient care. This conference has not only benefited our patients but has also contributed immensely to the education of our students and residents by disseminating the latest research in the field of surgery.”

In addition to showcasing the latest surgical advancements, the conference highlighted AKU’s pioneering contributions to medical technology. A key highlight was the introduction of 3D-printed PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) implants, developed in-house by AKU’s biomedical engineers. These advanced, high-performance implants offer customized solutions that are lighter, stronger, and more compatible with the human body. They are significantly reducing infection risks and enhancing long-term outcomes for patients. AKU currently employs these implants in various procedures, including cranial reconstructions and maxillofacial surgeries, with plans to expand their use into other surgical domains. This groundbreaking initiative exemplifies AKU’s commitment to improving patient care through innovation.

The Conference also emphasized AKU’s leadership in surgical care and its growing influence in shaping the future of healthcare, not only in Pakistan but throughout the region. The insights shared at this year’s conference will inspire future advancements in patient care, leaving a lasting impact on the medical community and the patients they serve.

Yusif Meizongo Jnr’s Ghanaian fragrance conglomerate, Maison Yusif

According to a report by Statista, In Ghana, the revenue generated in the Fragrances market amounts to US$527.70m and is expected that this market will experience an annual growth rate of 0.88%. This accounts to rapid growth of modern perfumery trends within a decade.

over a decade

Maison Yusif (formerly WHAT YOU WANT) is one of the fragrance conglomerates that majorly contributes to Ghana’s economy. According to Wikipedia, the company offers 20 fragrances made from indigenous plants. Yusif Meizongo, the founder of the company started it from the trunk of his car in 2017 and now owns multiple stores across Ghana.

In an interview with AmeyawDebrah, Meizongo said:

We are more into pure undiluted perfume oils because they rationally last longer than the alcohol-based fragrance, that’s if it is original. What You Want is a worldwide brand with reps in South Africa, America, London Rwanda, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Togo, etc so it is not just in Ghana.’

(As of 2024, Maison Yusif now produces alcohol perfumes)

With the advancement of technologies and it’s implementations, Online shopping has become common these days and Maison Yusif tends to incorporate such a system within their company. According to a survey done, 40% of the fragrances sold were bought online via Maison Yusif’s website.

Giving an interview to BBC News, Yusif Meizongo confirmed that they use local materials to manufacture perfumes.

According to a report by 6Wresearch, The perfumes and perfumery products market in Ghana has been growing steadily over the last few years, driven by rising disposable incomes and increasing demand from young people.

With limited domestic production capacities, most of these products are imported from other countries, primarily France and Italy. The market is dominated by international brands such as Dior, Chanel, Lancome and Estee Lauder however local brands such as Maison Yusif have started to gain much traction with their attractive price points and quality of product.

For 3 years, Maison Yusif has been the go-to brand for consumers overall especially in Ghana’s online as well as offline retail. This also contributes to the fact to promote local brands manufacturing products with indigenous material. Rather than increasing the import of raw, Maison Yusif is focused on exporting products.

Maryam Nawaz and the Defamation of Women Leaders in Pakistan

The controversy surrounding Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s handshake with the visiting UAE President, Mohammed Bin Zayed, has sparked significant debate. AI-generated video has been created, altering the handshake into an unethical video of her hugging the UAE president. This fabricated video has been making the rounds on social media sites all over the world. Unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon in Pakistan’s history.

Maryam Nawaz
Maryam Nawaz

Whenever a female political leader advances in her career, there are repeated attempts to assassinate her character by spreading fake and unethical news. The recent incident involving Maryam Nawaz is yet another example of the shameful and hypocritical double standards prevalent in Pakistan’s warped and twisted society. Numerous memes have surfaced on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and others, where individuals have edited videos using AI and shared them online.

This defamatory campaign was initiated by a group of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters, who criticized Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s handshake with the UAE President using AI-generated videos. This campaign has also created tensions between Pakistan and the UAE. Members of PTI actively discussed these memes on their social media pages, mocking and criticizing Maryam Nawaz for her style of shaking hands.

This act has hurt Maryam Nawaz’s public image. In response, she decided to take strict legal action against those responsible for creating and spreading these memes and defamatory videos. Unfortunately, such incidents are not new in Pakistan’s history. Many women in the country have faced similar challenges in the past.

For instance, in 1988, when Benazir Bhutto became the 11th Prime Minister of Pakistan, she too was subjected to character assassination. In an effort to damage her reputation, opposition members targeted her by throwing her photos from a helicopter. However, Benazir Bhutto did not succumb to these tactics. Instead, she fought back against everyone who sought to tarnish her character.

The defamatory intent of Benazir Bhutto
The defamatory intent of Benazir Bhutto

Similarly, Hina Rabbani Khar, the former foreign minister of Pakistan, faced criticism upon her appointment. Even Fatima Jinnah, a revered figure in Pakistan’s history, was not spared, as General Ayub Khan led a campaign to assassinate her character. For example, Fawad Chaudhry called Hina Rabbani Khar, the former minister of state for foreign affairs, a “low-IQ woman” whose fame is attributed to her sunglasses and handbag. These incidents reveal the deep-rooted misogyny in Pakistani society, which struggles to accept women in leadership roles or recognize their capabilities.

Now is the time to spread awareness about gender sensitivity and inculcate this education in our institutions. The younger generation must learn that women can lead and represent a nation as effectively as men. When Maryam Nawaz represents Pakistan, she does so not as a woman but as a leader. The position of a Chief Minister is gender-neutral. In diplomatic settings, such as meeting foreign leaders, gestures like handshakes are a sign of professionalism and respect, not impropriety. Maryam Nawaz and the President of the United Arab Emirates shaking hands is a sign of harmonious relations and diplomacy.

Globally, women leaders have engaged in similar professional gestures without facing such backlash. For example, Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. Secretary of State, often shook hands and hugged Muslim leaders without controversy. Similarly, Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel regularly met and greeted global leaders without being subjected to character assassination. Why, then, does Pakistani society create scandals and memes over such actions?

The Targeted Women leaders

It is crucial to educate our youth about gender sensitivity and equality. Maryam Nawaz’s decision to take strict action against those responsible for spreading defamatory AI-generated videos and memes is a commendable step. As directed by the Punjab government, the Cyber Crime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) supervised by Deputy Director Sarfaraz Chaudhry opened an investigation.

the arrested culprit
the arrested culprit

The FIA Wing carried out investigations throughout the nation as part of the probe. Numerous social media accounts that disseminate fabricated photos and videos of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz have been found. The FIA has arrested three suspects and is pursuing the remaining criminals through raids. This action will set a precedent, protecting many women in Pakistan from similar attacks in the future. If these individuals face consequences, they will think twice before attempting to assassinate any woman’s character again.

The bill aims to regulate the issuance, use, trading, and management of virtual assets within Pakistan. It proposes the establishment of virtual asset zones, backed by the Pakistan rupee, to ensure financial stability, protect investors, and prevent illegal activities, according to the bill.

The bill introduces a National Virtual Assets Regulatory Commission to manage virtual assets in Pakistan. The commission will register and license virtual asset zones, exchanges, and service providers. It will also oversee Pakistan Rupee-backed virtual assets, check transactions, and ensure rules for anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) are followed. Penalties will be given for breaking these rules.

No Full Google Wallet for Pakistan Yet, Developer Notes Suggest Limited Launch

Google Wallet set to launch in Pakistan (Google Developer Notes leak)
Google Wallet set to launch in Pakistan (Google Developer Notes leak)

Google Wallet’s anticipated launch in Pakistan has taken an unexpected turn. In December 2024, Google Developer Notes hinted at a full-scale rollout of Google Wallet in various countries, including Pakistan.

The feature-packed digital wallet, widely celebrated for its ability to store payment cards, loyalty cards, boarding passes, tickets, and do NFC transactions, was met with widespread enthusiasm in Pakistan. However, the latest Google Developer Notes reveal that Pakistan, alongside Egypt and Venezuela, will instead receive a “Passes-Only” version of Google Wallet.

What is the Passes-Only Version of Google Wallet?

The “Passes-Only” version of Google Wallet limits the platform’s functionality to storing and managing digital passes, such as:

  • Boarding passes
  • Event tickets
  • Loyalty and membership cards
Google Developer Notes January 2025
Google Developer Notes January 2025

Unlike the full version, this stripped-down iteration does not include the capability for contactless payments, integration with credit/debit cards, or mobile NFC transactions.

Google’s decision to release a limited version of Google Wallet in Pakistan may stem from:

  1. Regulatory Challenges: Introducing a payment platform often requires approval from local financial regulators and compliance with financial and data security laws. The current passes-only rollout might allow Google to establish an initial foothold while navigating these hurdles.
  2. Market Assessment: Google may want to evaluate the uptake of digital wallets in emerging markets like Pakistan before committing to a broader release.
  3. Infrastructure Constraints: The full functionality of Google Wallet requires a robust infrastructure for NFC payments, merchant adoption, and seamless financial system integration, which might still be evolving in Pakistan.

Google Wallet Set to Launch in Pakistan

Initially, the announcement of Google Wallet’s impending launch was seen as a potential disruptor for local digital wallet players such as Easypaisa, JazzCash, Sadapay, and Nayapay. However, the limited functionality of the passes-only version has tempered much of this optimism. Pakistani users, excited about the prospect of contactless payments, feel underwhelmed by the watered-down offering. This disappointment is reflected in online discussions and forums where potential users express their dissatisfaction.

one user stated:

“Also might I add, like 90% of phones don’t have NFC in Pakistan so it wouldn’t have made a difference to the majority of people anyway. And UBL pay at least has a wearOS app too so you’re not really losing anything in terms of contactless payments when compared with Google wallet.”

Without Google Wallet’s full suite of features, its impact on the dominance of local players is significantly diminished. Platforms like JazzCash and Easypaisa already offer comprehensive financial services, including mobile wallet functionalities, P2P payments, and bill payments. The absence of competitive features like NFC payments or international usage makes the passes-only Google Wallet less threatening in the short term.

The launch of a full-scale Google Wallet would have compelled local competitors to innovate and improve their offerings. With the limited version, this pressure is alleviated, which may inadvertently slow down advancements in Pakistan’s digital wallet ecosystem.

Why Is It Not Enough?

  • No Contactless Payments: Users’ excitement for an international-level wallet service is primarily rooted in the ability to make secure, seamless, and contactless payments. Without this feature, Google Wallet’s use case shrinks significantly.
  • Lack of Financial Integration: Pakistani users value features like bill payments, money transfers, and online shopping, which are offered by local wallets but missing in the passes-only version.

While the introduction of a passes-only Google Wallet in Pakistan provides basic functionality for managing digital passes, it falls short of addressing the high expectations generated by the initial announcement. For Pakistani users, who anticipated a fully integrated digital wallet to rival existing solutions, this limited version is a letdown. Local players can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they won’t face significant competition yet.

X, formally known as Twitter, is working in Pakistan without VPN

0

UPDATE: X is not operational and remains for ‘Official Use Only’

Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is now working in Pakistan without VPN. Many users are surprised, as the platform was previously restricted.

National-scale disruption of X that began amid protests by former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other parties against alleged rigging of the February 8 national election in the country.

Twitter services shut down
Twitter

X (twitter) faced restrictions in Pakistan in the past due to its non-compliance with certain government directives related to content moderation and regulations. These restrictions made it challenging for regular users to access the platform, causing significant disruptions for businesses, activists, and individuals who relied on the platform for communication and outreach. This also caused significant damage to the business ecosystem.

The transformation of Twitter into X under Elon Musk’s leadership brought a ripple of changes, including a focus on broader use cases such as payments, monetization, and expanded communication tools. The platform’s accessibility in Pakistan without a VPN marks a significant change, though it remains unclear whether this is due to policy changes on the platform’s part or adjustments by local or competent authorities.

The news of X being available without VPN has sparked mixed reactions online. Many users welcomed the move, celebrating the ease of access to their favorite platform. Entrepreneurs, digital marketers, and content creators are particularly pleased, as this eliminates the hassle of using a VPN, which often slowed down connections and complicated workflows.

Sadapay Faces Backlash Over Erroneous Email Blast to Users and Non-Users Alike

Sadapay Error-Mail
Sadapay Error-Mail

On Friday, January 3, 2025, Sadapay, a leading fintech platform in Pakistan, sent a bulk email to its mailing list with the subject line, “Apkay Sadapay funds process ho gae hain!” (“Your Sadapay funds have been processed!”). What initially appeared to be a routine notification has sparked widespread confusion and criticism online, as the email was sent not only to active Sadapay users but also to non-users, including individuals living abroad.

One baffled recipient, a non-user based in the United States, took to social media, posting:

“I don’t have a Sadapay account… what funds bhai? Muje account close kea hua 2 sal ho chuke hain [It’s been two years since I closed my account] 😭!”

Context and Speculation

Reddit User
Reddit User

The mishap has raised questions about Sadapay’s internal processes and communication practices. Notably, the incident follows a series of high-profile issues involving the platform. Recently, Sadapay initiated a crackdown on users exploiting its debit card to abuse “free trial periods of premium services without paying post-trial fees. This led to account suspensions, with funds held in limbo following repeated warnings. While the erroneous email may have been intended for a targeted group of these users, technical or operational lapses seemingly caused it to be dispatched to the entire mailing list.

Industry observers suggest this points to deeper systemic problems. Following its merger with Papara, a prominent Turkish fintech firm, Sadapay has faced widespread scrutiny over internal layoffs [According to Pakistan Today Sadapay laid off 30% of its entire workforce, including some C-suite executives as of july, 2024] and service disruptions. Users have reported persistent bugs and network issues, attributing these challenges to a significant downsizing of IT staff after the merger.

One Reddit user encapsulated public sentiment:

“The original company sold it. The new owners laid off roughly half of the IT staff, leading to bugs and network issues. I’ve stopped using it since.”

Fallout Among Freelancers

The email debacle has also reignited discontent among Pakistan’s freelance community. Sadapay’s business platform was initially touted as a game-changer for facilitating international payments for freelancers. However, many freelancers claim the service has fallen short of expectations, citing delays, technical issues, and account freezes.

Company Response

In the aftermath of the errant email, Sadapay issued a follow-up apology titled:

“Oops! Our apologies for the previous email – please ignore.”

The apology email

While the company has acknowledged the error, it remains unclear whether the mishap stemmed from human oversight, a technical bug, or a breach of the company’s databases.

This latest controversy compounds Sadapay’s ongoing reputational challenges, raising concerns about its operational stability and commitment to user satisfaction. As speculation continues to swirl, affected users and industry analysts alike await further clarification from the company’s leadership.

Focus on the borders, not politics — Imran Khan

0

Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, sends a message from Adiala Jail to the military

Focus on the borders, not politics.

At a time when political divisions run deep and partisan politics can overshadow national interests, Khan’s remark highlights the importance of prioritizing national security and sovereignty in Pakistan. The borders are the fabric that holds a nation together. They define our territory, protect our people, and safeguard our economic interests. Any compromise on border security can lead to instability and vulnerability, both of which have long term repercussions on the country’s growth and development.

Political infighting, on the other hand, can be detrimental to progress. While it is essential for a country to have healthy political debates, it must never come at the cost of ignoring the pressing matters that require immediate attention.

Imran Khan’s statement calls for a collective focus on issues that matter the most in ensuring national security strengthening our borders, managing resources efficiently, and fostering unity across all levels of government. A nation’s true strength lies in its ability to secure and defend itself while maintaining unity at the grassroots level.

According to Imran khan’s recent statement while political matters will continue to play a significant role in shaping the future, our borders should remain a top priority. Without a secure nation, the very foundation of political discourse becomes irrelevant. It’s time we refocus our energy on the fundamental building blocks of national security and work towards a peaceful and prosperous future of Pakistan.

PMI Hosts 10th ‘Technovation’ Event in Abu Dhabi

0

The 10th edition of Philip Morris International (“PMI”)’s ‘Technovation’ event was held in Abu Dhabi in December 2024. The event brought together PMI senior management and policy experts, to discuss the transformative role of technology and innovation in delivering a smoke-free future.

The event showcased PMI’s commitment to science-driven tobacco harm reduction and progress towards non-combustible alternatives. The event also provided a platform for thought-provoking discussions on the role of smoke-free alternatives in moving adult smokers away from cigarettes, and on the potential of balanced regulatory framework to harness innovation and social impact.

PMI’s Senior leaders, scientists, and R&D experts highlighted substantial evidence of smoke-free alternatives, including oral smokeless, vapor, and heated tobacco products, underscoring their potential to significantly reduce the risks associated with smoking. Attendees also explored how advancements in technology and innovation could address the challenges of smoking and align with global sustainability goals.

Ali Takesh, Managing Director of Philip Morris Pakistan Limited, stressed the urgency of adopting tobacco harm reduction measures globally, stating: “At PMI, we aim to leverage innovations based on science and technology, to expeditiously reduce the harm of smoking. Science and innovation have demonstrated that smoke-free products, such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco or nicotine pouches, can accelerate a decline in cigarette sales compared to traditional tobacco control measures alone. The global smoking problem demands effective solutions, and success stories from countries like Sweden and Japan validate the potential of these strategies. We urge all stakeholders to support these efforts by embracing evidence-based policies.”

“We are doing our part. But encouraging people who smoke to switch to better alternatives if they do not quit requires everyone to play their role,” added Fred de Wilde, President, SSEA, CIS & MEA Region at Philip Morris International. “Governments, for example, can set regulatory frameworks that accelerate change and encourage innovation. This is why we are here, sharing our experiences and science transparently to foster this debate. I hope we can count on your support in this fascinating journey that will have a positive impact on public health in this part of the world.”

“Better alternatives to cigarettes exist, and scientific data support their potential to be less harmful. The missing piece of the puzzle is the collective effort of governments, the public health community, our industry, and civil society to make these alternatives accessible to adult smokers who do not quit” said Tommaso Di Giovanni, VP International Comms & Engagement at Philip Morris International.

The event featured a comprehensive agenda, including presentations on PMI results and recent scientific evidence that examined the role of smoke-free products in reducing smoking rates. Discussions also covered the use of technology and innovation to promote societal progress, as well as the importance of balanced regulatory and policy frameworks to further support the adoption of smoke-free products. Additionally, interactive exhibition tours featured over 30 years of innovation, along with PMI latest sustainability initiatives, virtual reality experiences, and product demonstrations, offering attendees a firsthand understanding of tobacco harm reduction advancements.

The event also addressed the challenges of misinformation and skepticism surrounding tobacco harm reduction and smoke-free alternatives, emphasizing the need for dialogue and collaboration among governments, health care professionals, NGOs, and public health advocates. Stakeholder engagement is crucial to making smoke-free products accessible, affordable, and accepted by adult consumers worldwide.

At Technovation, PMI reaffirmed its pioneering role in driving multi-category, harm reduction innovations and its dedication to transforming the tobacco industry through science and technology. The company continues to pave the way for a smoke-free future, where public health and individual choice remain at the forefront of its mission.

Several sections of the motorway M-2, M3 and M-4’s were closed due to heavy fog in the region. Motorway M3 was closed from Faizpur Lahore to Dera Khana, according to the motorway police Spokesperson.

Motorway Police spokesperson Imran Ahmed said that visibility issues forced the closure of the M2 motorway from Thokar Niaz Baig to Babu Sabu and the M3 motorway from Samundri to Darkhan. The motorway is also closed for all kind of traffic from Kot Momin to Lillah Interchange due to 0 visibility caused by fog.

A spokesperson for the motorway reported that Motorway M4, from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, was also shut down due to the heavy fog and 0 visibility.

“Motorways are closed to ensure safe travel for the public,” said Ahmed, advising motorists to prioritise travel during daylight hours, particularly between 10 am and 6 pm, during foggy weather conditions”.

Drivers were also urged to use fog lights for both front and back visibility, avoid unnecessary travel and tours, maintain appropriate distances from other vehicles, and reduce your vehicle speed.

Few days back, it was reported that the heavy fog covered multiple cities across Pakistan, causing 0 visibility and an increase in cold weather.

Deadlock in Kurram Jirga Stalls Peace Agreement Amid Humanitarian Crisis

The Kurram grand jirga convened in Kohat has failed to resolve the impasse on key issues critical to restoring peace in the troubled Kurram district. Despite marathon discussions under the leadership of Commissioner Kohat, Mutasim Bilal Shah, the dispute over surrendering heavy weaponry has delayed the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement.

“The government cannot risk reopening the roads unless all heavy weaponry is securely stored,”

Commissioner Shah stated during the assembly at Kohat Fort. He emphasized that trust-building steps, including mutual disarmament, are non-negotiable for long-term stability.

While broad agreement was achieved on many provisions, the contentious demand for mutual disarmament — with all factions handing over weapons to government authorities — has left discussions deadlocked. Government representatives have highlighted that any resolution must align with the Apex Committee’s directives, which prioritize peace and safety in the region.

With road networks blocked for weeks, residents of Kurram face mounting hardships. Helicopter services have been activated to deliver medicines and supplies to the region. Health Advisor Ihtesham Ali reported that

“since December 13, over 16,000 patients have been treated at Parachinar DHQ, most of them women and children. For critically ill patients unable to visit hospitals, medicines are being delivered to their homes.”

Ali also assured that health centers in Upper Kurram, including Parachinar DHQ, have sufficient medical supplies, including insulin and medications for chronic conditions. Yet, patients have described the situation as dire. On Thursday, Pakistan’s health department sent medical supplies to Kurram district.

“My son requires regular insulin for his condition, and we’ve had to depend on emergency helicopter drops for his survival,”

said Fatima Bibi, a resident of Parachinar

“The government must act to reopen roads and end this nightmare.”

Growing frustration over prolonged blockades has ignited protests beyond Kurram. In Parachinar, a sit-in outside the Press Club on Kachehri Road has entered its sixth day. Activists have called for immediate government intervention, while prominent philanthropist Faisal Edhi has drawn national attention to the crisis.

“If proper records were kept, they would reveal that more than 100 children have died due to the conflict,”

Edhi lamented during a meeting with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan in Karachi.

“Critical patients have no access to treatment, and even private hospitals are running out of essential supplies like oxygen.”

Solidarity protests have disrupted Karachi’s traffic system, bringing areas such as Shahra-e-Faisal, MA Jinnah Road, and University Road to a standstill. Religious leader Allama Hassan Zafer Naqvi reiterated solidarity with Kurram residents:

“This protest is not just about Kurram—it’s about exposing the government’s failure to address a humanitarian crisis.”
