A report by 24NewsHD TV channel, the GM of the National Highway Authority (NHA) has confirmed the completion of the feasibility study. The tunnel’s construction is expected to significantly enhance safety and reduce travel time between the Lahore and Islamabad by approximately 25 to 35 minutes.

History of M-2 Lahore-Islamabad Motorway:

The Lahore-Islamabad motorway is 375 km long and one of the most expensive motorways in Asia, located entirely in Punjab. Islamabad Under the influence of Karachi

Once heralded as the ‘Planned City’ of Pakistan, Islamabad’s designed infrastructure and peaceful environment made it a symbol of the nation’s aspirations. However, over recent years, the city has seen a dramatic shift, with rising crime rates, growing safety concerns, and declining trust in governance tarnishing its reputation.

Islamabad’s designation as Pakistan’s capital in 1959 came with the promise of a sustainable, safe, and orderly metropolis. Yet, recent data from Numbeo reveals a stark contrast to this vision. Between 2020 and 2024, Islamabad’s ranking on Numbeo’s Crime Index worsened significantly, jumping from 301st to 236th among the world’s most unsafe cities.

Traditionally, Karachi has held the unenviable title of Pakistan’s most crime-ridden city. Yet, many now compare Islamabad’s escalating crime

to Karachi’s infamous lawlessness. Social media users have expressed concern over Islamabad’s transformation. One Reddit user, @ZealousidealNews3369, lamented the city’s descent into chaos, while another, @Sheryar24, criticized the lack of civic-minded citizens, stating, “Islamabad now lacks ‘Quality People’ who are supposed to obey traffic laws, are respectful and civil to others.”

Experts and officials attribute this rise in crime to several factors, chief among them being rapid population growth. A senior police officer told The Tribune that migration from other cities has overwhelmed the city’s resources, making crime prevention increasingly challenging.

In response, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi was appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) in April 2024 with a mandate to curb the crime wave. Under his leadership, significant progress was reported—4,279 criminals involved in heinous crimes were arrested, as per The Nation.

However, the backlog of court cases skyrocketed from 6,000 in April to 16,500 by September, reflecting a judicial system struggling to keep pace with the rising crime rate.

Despite these efforts, Rizvi’s tenure has not been without controversy. During a recent National Assembly committee meeting, parliamentarians spent more time criticizing Rizvi’s tone than addressing the crime surge. A subsequent press release by the NA Secretariat praised the efforts of the Islamabad Police, but many residents remain skeptical of these claims.

For many, the rising crime has become a part of daily life. A resident of Islamabad described a harrowing encounter on social media: “Last night in G-9, a taxi recklessly driving near Ada Chowk almost ran me over. I got hit by his car and collided with the median.” Though unverified, such stories highlight the growing unease among citizens.

Near Golra Mor, a brazen attack on police officers escorting a suspect in a bank robbery case ended with the suspect fatally injured. Subsequent investigations revealed the prime suspect was from Sargodha, raising questions about the increasing involvement of out-of-city criminals in Islamabad’s crime wave.

The rise in crime has left Islamabad at a crossroads. Its identity as a safe and organized capital is under threat, as citizens lose trust in the ability of law enforcement and policymakers to ensure their safety.

While progress has been made, as evidenced by recent arrests, the root causes—unchecked migration, strained judicial capacity, growing inequality, and social discontent—must be addressed comprehensively. Without a coordinated response, Islamabad risks becoming a cautionary tale of a city that lost its way.

As one resident aptly put it,

Islamabad was supposed to be a dream city, but for many of us, it’s quickly becoming a nightmare.”

The recent protests have worsened the situation in the capital. There must exist a strict law to encounter increasing crime rate.

Nation Gathers to Honor the Former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto

LARKANA, Pakistan — Thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto converged on the town of Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on Wednesday to mark the 17th anniversary of her assassination, a moment steeped in both grief and reverence for the late leader’s legacy.

Bhutto, the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority nation, was assassinated in 2007 during a political rally in Rawalpindi. Each year, her party, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), commemorates her death anniversary with solemn tributes and large-scale gatherings at her family mausoleum.

This year, the commemoration began with a symbolic journey. Special trains from cities like Lahore transported supporters adorned with banners of Bhutto and her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the former prime minister and PPP founder. Vibrant displays featuring the party’s iconic red, green, and black flags draped the trains.

Prominent PPP leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Kundi, Punjab Governor Sardar Sulem Haider, and lawmaker Shazia Marri, were among the key figures who reached the family burial site to lead the tributes. Thousands more supporters, referred to locally as “jiyalas,” arrived in caravans from across the country.

In her lifetime, Bhutto was known for her eloquence and conviction.

“Democracy is the best revenge,”

she famously declared, a statement that reflected deeply following her father’s execution in 1979 and has since become a rallying cry for her party’s ideals.

“Islam is not incompatible with democracy. Pakistanis can choose progress and prosperity over extremism,”

Bhutto said in a speech just days before her assassination. For many, these words underscore her vision of a Pakistan grounded in equality, tolerance, and progress.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), paid tribute to Bhutto’s legacy, calling her “a champion of democracy” and “a staunch advocate of the power of dialogue and reconciliation in the political process.” Sharif also highlighted the significance of the Charter of Democracy, signed between Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, describing it as “a testament to her enduring legacy.” He extended his deepest respects to Bhutto’s family, particularly President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, for carrying forward her vision and ideals.

The solemn ceremonies kicked off on December 27 with the traditional placement of floral wreaths and the offering of prayers at the Bhutto family gravesite, where Benazir and her father rest. Security was heightened across Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, with stringent measures in place to ensure a peaceful event. Thousands of police personnel were deployed.

Her assassination remains a reminder of the volatility that can accompany political dissent in Pakistan, but her life, celebrated in these annual gatherings, continues to inspire countless supporters to strive for the ideals she championed.

“Pakistan is my country; it is my home. I will lay down my life, but I will never abandon this nation,”

Bhutto once declared, a sentiment echoed by her supporters, whose steadfast devotion to her memory endures 17 years after her tragic death.

Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi earlier that evening after his health deteriorated.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab Province (now in Pakistan), Singh was a distinguished economist and politician. He served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, becoming the first Sikh to hold the office. His tenure was marked by significant economic reforms and policies that contributed to India’s growth.

Before his premiership, Singh held several key positions, including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Finance Minister. As Finance Minister in the early 1990s, he was instrumental in implementing economic liberalization policies that transformed India’s economy.

Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics. Tributes are pouring in from across the nation, reflecting on his contributions to the country’s development and his legacy as a statesman.

“I Know at a Point in My Life, I Will Get Killed” — Mahrang Baloch Speaks Out on Suppression in Balochistan

In a candid and harrowing conversation with broadcast journalist Mehdi Hasan, Mahrang Baloch—a prominent human rights defender and advocate for the Baloch National cause—bared the extent of oppression faced by Baloch individuals under state authorities in Pakistan. The conversation underscored not only her personal risks but also the systemic silencing of a marginalized ethnic group.

Mahrung Baloch
Mahrung Baloch

Baloch, visibly impassioned yet resolute, explained her recent thwarted attempt to travel internationally for TIME’s event.

“Because I represent a cause—the Baloch National cause—they prevented me from reaching New York,”

she revealed. Her journey was not merely about personal gain but a mission to bring global attention to what she terms

“war crimes in Balochistan.”

The Mahrung Baloch
The Mahrung Baloch

She accused Pakistan’s military establishment of routine abductions and extrajudicial killings, a grim reality that, according to her, extends beyond Balochistan into Punjab.

“Just last night,”

she stated,

“three Baloch students were abducted from their hostels in Lahore.”

Such incidents, she elaborated, have become a “norm” for Balochs, people who frequently receive mutilated bodies of their loved ones in place of justice or answers.

The personal toll of her activism is one Baloch does not downplay. Reflecting on her constant vulnerability, she admitted,

“That makes me very depressed… We leave our homes, see our mothers, and tell them we don’t know if we will return.”

Mahrang Baloch
Mahrang Baloch

This vulnerability isn’t unique to her but a shared plight among those who dare speak against state atrocities.

Her statement,

“I know at a point in my life, I will get killed,”

reverberates with a chilling inevitability that encapsulates the plight of the Baloch people. For a region fraught with resource exploitation, ethnic discrimination, and lack of autonomy, Mahrang’s life and voice symbolize the existential threat to dissent.

Systemic Repression or National Stability?

Mahrang Baloch’s statement has put a stark spotlight on the balance—or lack thereof—between security measures and human rights in Pakistan. The state’s narrative often hinges on maintaining stability and countering separatist movements in Balochistan. However, critics argue these policies come at the cost of fundamental freedoms, creating a cycle of repression that alienates communities further.

Balochistan, rich in natural resources yet underdeveloped, has long harbored sentiments of disenfranchisement. The voices like Mahrang’s amplify the human cost of unchecked militarization—lives lost, families torn apart, and an unshaken fear that resonates through generations.

Global Implications

As Mahrang highlighted, international platforms and scrutiny are critical in addressing these injustices. Her inability to present her case in New York reflects not just on her personal struggles but also on the broader international indifference to localized oppression. While global institutions champion human rights on paper, the lack of actionable mechanisms leaves advocates like Mahrang exposed and unsupported.

Diabetic Kidney Disease: A Growing Health Crisis in Pakistan

0

Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing health problems in Pakistan, affecting millions across all age groups. This chronic condition not only impacts blood sugar levels but can also lead to serious complications, one of the most concerning being kidney disease. Diabetic kidney disease, or diabetic nephropathy, is a condition where high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, making it difficult for them to filter waste from the blood. If left unchecked, diabetic kidney disease can progress to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.

The Burden of Diabetic Kidney Disease in Pakistan: In Pakistan, diabetes prevalence is alarmingly high, with approximately 33 million people diagnosed, making it one of the top countries in the world affected by this disease. With such high diabetes rates, the risk of developing diabetic kidney disease is also elevated. Nearly 40% of people with diabetes will eventually develop kidney disease. This is a heavy burden on both the healthcare system and families, as managing kidney disease is costly, and treatment options like dialysis or transplants are not accessible or affordable for everyone. A combination of factors, including poverty, limited healthcare access, and poor health infrastructure, contributes to the increasing burden and worsens the situation for a developing country like Pakistan.

Symptoms and Consequences of Diabetic Kidney Disease: Diabetic kidney disease usually develops slowly, and in its early stages, it may not show any noticeable symptoms, often earning it the label of a “silent” disease. Symptoms may appear only when the disease has advanced and can include swelling in the feet, shortness of breath, fatigue, poor appetite, difficulty concentrating, and reduced urine output. As the disease progresses, symptoms can become severe, leading to high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones, and an increased risk of infections. Ultimately, untreated kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival.

Screening and Diagnosis: Early Detection is Key: Given the high prevalence of diabetes in Pakistan, regular screening for kidney disease is essential, especially for those who have had diabetes for several years. Screening tests include simple urine tests to detect protein levels (an early sign of kidney damage) and blood tests to assess kidney function. Regular check-ups can detect kidney disease at its earliest stages, when it can be managed with lifestyle changes and medication to prevent further progression. It is recommended that people with diabetes undergo these tests at least once a year.

Preventing Diabetic Kidney Disease: Preventing diabetic kidney disease requires strict control of blood sugar levels, a healthy lifestyle, and regular monitoring. Here are some strategies to help reduce the risk:

  1. Control Blood Sugar: High blood sugar levels are the main cause of diabetic kidney disease. Managing blood sugar through diet, exercise, and medication is crucial. People with diabetes should work with their doctors to set and achieve healthy blood sugar goals.
  2. Monitor Blood Pressure: High blood pressure can worsen kidney disease. People with diabetes should keep their blood pressure under control, ideally below 130/80 mm Hg, through lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medication.
  3. Adopt a Healthy Diet: A balanced diet low in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats can help maintain kidney health. Eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is beneficial. Reducing salt intake also helps to control blood pressure.
  4. Stay Physically Active: Regular physical activity can improve blood sugar control, reduce blood pressure, and help maintain a healthy weight. Even moderate exercise, such as walking or cycling for 30 minutes a day, can make a difference.
  5. Avoid Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of kidney disease, and quitting can greatly benefit kidney health.

The Need for Preventive Strategies in Pakistan: With the high rates of diabetes and the growing number of people affected by diabetic kidney disease, it is essential to focus on preventive strategies at both individual and community levels. Education, awareness campaigns, and public health initiatives in schools, workplaces, and public spaces can help raise awareness about diabetes, its complications, and the importance of early screening. People with diabetes should be encouraged to get regular kidney function tests, and healthcare providers should make screening accessible and affordable.

Raising awareness, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and promoting regular screening can reduce the burden of diabetic kidney disease in Pakistan. By understanding the link between diabetes and kidney health, we can take proactive steps to prevent this serious complication and protect the well-being of our communities.

Global Experts Urge End to Lead Use in Landmark Health Study

0

Aga Khan University’s Dr Zafar Fatmi has co-authored a new paper published in the Lancet Planetary Health, highlighting the urgent need to eliminate lead from the global economy. The study, led by Stanford University and co-authored by experts from renowned institutions including AKU, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, University of Southern California, and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, presents compelling evidence for a swift global phaseout of lead.

“Why do we allow trillions of dollars of damage to human health, entire ecosystems, and the global economy to accrue for the sake of $100 billion in benefits?” asks Dr Fatmi, Section Head of Environmental, Occupational Health, and Climate Change at AKU’s Community Health Sciences. The authors argue that despite its limited economic value, lead’s impact on health, productivity, and ecosystems is staggering, affecting life expectancy, cognitive development, and environmental health worldwide.

The paper reveals that 5.2 million tons of lead entered the environment in 2022 alone, largely driven by demand for low-cost lead-acid batteries. Lead pollution endangers ecosystems and harms organisms across the food chain, from plants and animals to humans, contributing to 5.5 million premature deaths annually from cardiovascular disease and resulting in 765 million lost IQ points among children. Beyond health impacts, lead is responsible for significant losses in productivity due to its neurotoxic effects, including reduced brain function, cognitive impairment, and behaviour changes.

Lead, classified as a potent neurotoxin, is no longer necessary for the global economy. The paper asserts that readily available, safer alternatives make lead’s continued use and production both outdated and economically unwise. Notably, lead-based products generate less than $100 billion annually, an amount dwarfed by the economic and societal costs of lead-related health burdens, premature death, and lost productivity.

The authors urge a comprehensive approach to lead removal, including a proposed phaseout by 2035, a tax on lead products, and international regulations to classify lead as toxic waste. Given the limitations of current recycling practices in many regions, particularly low- and middle-income countries, the paper advocates for a paradigm shift, pushing for safer, lead-free alternatives and enhanced regulatory frameworks.

“The data is clear: the cost to human health and the environment is simply too high to ignore,” Dr Fatmi emphasizes. The study also suggests that a global treaty could inspire a multi-pronged approach, including donor-funded research into alternatives, policy initiatives, and investment in low-cost substitutes.

This collaborative work signifies a growing movement among scientists and policy experts to end lead exposure and foster a healthier, more sustainable global economy.

Sheldon Maschler’s Impact on Wall Street

0

In the 1980s, Wall Street operated under the strict rules of tradition, dominated by large brokerage houses and entrenched “old” money. The inefficiencies of the market allowed brokers to impose high commissions and inflated spreads, profiting at their customers’ expense.

Maschler, frustrated with this status quo, sought to change the landscape of trading. Drawing from his early life experiences in war-torn Europe and Brooklyn, he rejected the inefficiencies of Wall Street. In founding Datek and later The Island ECN, he aimed to democratize market access, offering low-cost investing options to the masses.

One of Maschler’s key innovations was the Small Order Execution System (SOES). This system expedited trading, reduced costs, and faced resistance from the traditional establishment, including the SEC. By forcing market makers to honor their quotes, SOES diminished the significance of inflated spreads, revolutionizing the trading process.

The Island ECN further challenged traditional practices by promoting a transition from fractional listing to a decimal system, enhancing efficiency and reducing unfair profits for brokers. Maschler’s unwavering confidence in his innovations led to their overwhelming success, fundamentally altering Wall Street’s approach to customer service and paving the way for a more equitable financial landscape.

On September 30, 2024, the leadership and healthcare professionals of the Aga Khan University came together to celebrate the generosity of Roche, Pakistan, in providing access to cancer care at AKU’s Hospital in Karachi.

Since 2018, Roche Pakistan under its access programme, has provided medicines to patients at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent individuals from receiving the treatments they need. This initiative has not only eased the burden of medical costs for many families but has also restored the hope and dignity of those fighting cancer.

This six-year partnership between AKU and Roche has benefited over 1500 cancer patients treated at AKUH. What brings the two organisations together is their shared goal of making high-quality life-saving cancer treatments accessible to patients who can’t afford them.

“The fight against cancer in Pakistan is one that is far bigger than any single institution. It’s one that demands that people and institutions across the country join hands and work together. And that is precisely what Roche and AKU are doing”, said AKU President, Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin at the appreciation event.

The Aga Khan University Hospital’s Patient Welfare Programme brings together individual and corporate donors like Roche, Pakistan to support patients from low-income backgrounds to access critical treatments for complex diseases such as cancer. Since 1986, the welfare programme has disbursed nearly 35 billion rupees in welfare support, helping millions of individuals from across Pakistan to benefit from quality healthcare services at AKUH.

“The in-kind support from Roche, Pakistan not only provides vital medicines but also instils hope in our patients during some of their darkest times”, said Ms Zahra Somani, Chief Advancement Officer, AKU. “We look forward to continuing our partnership to expand access to quality cancer care for the people of Pakistan.”

The event kicked off at the crack of dawn at the AKU Sports and Rehabilitation Centre, with participants arriving in a wave of red attire. The ride attracted a diverse group of around 600 cyclists, including students, doctors, nurses, hospital leadership, and members of civil society, all united in the cause of raising heart health awareness. The cyclists rode a carefully planned route, passing from Karsaz Road to Shahrah-e-Faisal, then to Drigh Road, and finally returning to the AKU campus.

Dr Saulat Fatimi said, “Around half of the people with heart diseases are diagnosed after their death. Our motive behind activities such as mini marathons and cycling events is to create awareness about how to care for your heart and be mindful of regular heart health checkups.”

Both events concluded with a hearty breakfast at the AKU Sports Centre.

These events are in line with AKUH’s enduring commitment to fostering healthy living within the community. For years, AKUH has been at the forefront of organizing events that promote wellness and good health. 0

Pakistan inDrive, a leading ride hailing company in Pakistan is celebrating a major milestone: the completion of 5 billion deals on its global mobility and urban services platform as of September, 2024. The landmark 5 billionth deal was sealed by a driver and passenger in Peru, marking a significant moment for inDrive since the company launched its innovative bid-based pricing model in 2012 with the goal of making ridesharing pricing fairer for both drivers and passengers.

In the years that followed, inDrive has expanded its mission of challenging injustice and improving people’s lives by extending its innovative bid-based model beyond ridesharing. These services now include city-to-city and intercity transportation, courier deliveries, freight services, as well as other urban solutions such as housekeeping and small home repairs. This growth and diversification reflect inDrive’s evolution from being the world’s second-most downloaded mobility app to a global multi-service platform operating across 46 countries.

Over the past 11 years inDrive has leveraged its strong product-market fit across diverse regions, demonstrating a unique ability to scale rapidly and secure leading positions across markets without disproportionately focusing on any single country. This underscores the global customer demand for greater freedom of choice and a desire to take back control from algorithms – precisely what the inDrive model provides.

Mark Loughran, President and Deputy CEO at inDrive, commented:

“I am thrilled to congratulate the entire team at inDrive and thank our loyal community around the globe for having completed 5 billion deals – an important milestone that is a testament to the global scale inDrive has reached over the past decade. More than just a number, each of these transactions represents making a meaningful impact — whether it’s providing services in underserved areas, creating job opportunities, or helping support non–profit initiatives through inVision, which enables access to sports, art and educational opportunities in communities where inDrive operates. Our mission has always been to improve people’s lives, and with this milestone, we are even closer to our goal of positively impacting 1 billion people by 2030. This achievement fuels our commitment to not only sustainably growing our platform but also driving positive social change.”

Since launching ride-hailing, its core service, eleven years ago, inDrive passengers have traveled for a total of 123,500 years, covering a distance of 32 billion km. inDrive has also expanded to include a range of additional services, most recently launching financial services for drivers in Mexico, and continues to grow its operations and expand into new regions – including developed markets – worldwide.

S M Tanveer expresses disappointment over 2 percent cut in policy rate

0

S M Tanveer, Patron-in-Chief United Business Group (UBG), has expressed disappointment over the monetary policy, saying that the rate cut by 200 bps or 2 percent is too little, too late in the context of price data – domestically & internationally.

He said the core inflation is going to be around 7.0 percent for the month of September 2024 as per market estimates. On top of that, international oil prices have come down to a 3-year low at less than $70 per barrel this week.

Tanveer said the business community was expecting that the SBP had all it takes to announce a substantive rate cut; but, it has still held on regressive, counterproductive, and contractionary monetary policy practices.

He pointed out that the cost of doing business; ease of doing business and access to finance in Pakistan is at the lowest as compared to all its competitors in the export markets. The only viable solution to get back on economic growth trajectory is to support industry and exports, he added.

He said State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) should focus on core inflation rather than general inflation on an immediate basis as it excludes the most volatile and irrelevant components of the basket; i.e. food and energy. The government must ensure the effectiveness of price control measures through vigilant actions against hoarding, price gouging and malpractices.

Tanveer explained that despite the progressive and major hikes in the policy rates from 9.75 percent to 22 percent over a period 6 quarters in 2022 and 2023, general inflation remained stubbornly high and didn’t respond to the policy rate in Pakistan. We should start making our monetary and fiscal policies based on our own ground realities and hard facts, he added.

He said the interest rate should come down to 12 percent immediately to enable Pakistani exporters to some extent to compete in the regional and international export markets by reducing the cost of capital in a meaningful way. This step should be accompanied by the fulfilment of the government’s promise to rationalize electricity tariffs for industry; and, renegotiate independent power producers’ (IPPs) agreements, he stressed.
