Govt finalized a plan to construct a tunnel at Kallar Kahar M-2

According to National Highway Authority (NHA): Four firms have completed the feasibility study for the construction of a 10 KM – long tunnel in the Kalar Kahar Salt Range on M-2 Lahore, Islamabad (Motorway), to prevent accidents on the route which have become frequent now.

A report by 24NewsHD TV channel, the GM of the National Highway Authority (NHA) has confirmed the completion of the feasibility study. The tunnel’s construction is expected to significantly enhance safety and reduce travel time between the Lahore and Islamabad by approximately 25 to 35 minutes.

History of M-2 Lahore-Islamabad Motorway:

The Lahore-Islamabad motorway is 375 km long and one of the most expensive motorways in Asia, located entirely in Punjab. It passes through, Faizpur Pur, Kot Abdull Malik, Kala Shah Kaku, Sheikhupura, Khanqah Dogran, Kot Sarwar, Pindi Bhattian, Salem, Lilla, Kot Momin, Kallar Kahar, Balksar, Nila Dulha and Chakri before ending just outside the twin cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad. It was the first motorway built in South Asia.

Construction of the Lahore- Islamabad motorway M-2 commenced in 1992. The motorway was officially opened to traffic in 1997, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s infrastructural development. The M-2 was designed to meet international standards, featuring dual carriageways, multiple lanes, and state-of-the-art facilities to ensure the safety and comfort of travelers.

In response, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi was appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) in April 2024 with a mandate to curb the crime wave. Under his leadership, significant progress was reported—4,279 criminals involved in heinous crimes were arrested, as per The Nation.

However, the backlog of court cases skyrocketed from 6,000 in April to 16,500 by September, reflecting a judicial system struggling to keep pace with the rising crime rate.

Despite these efforts, Rizvi’s tenure has not been without controversy. During a recent National Assembly committee meeting, parliamentarians spent more time criticizing Rizvi’s tone than addressing the crime surge. Former Prime Minister and Veteran Congress Leader Manmohan Singh was admitted to AIIMS Delhi due to worsening health and passed away on Thursday, 26 December 2024, according to reports and AIIMS Delhi Manmohan Singh died a few hours after his hospitalization at the age of 92.

He served as the 14th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014 was widely regarded as one of the greatest economist.

On 1972 he appointed as a Chief Economic advisor in the ministry of finance. Later he held the position of governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 1982 moo 1985.

In June 1991, India’s prime minister at the time, P.V. Narasimha Rao, chose Manmohan to be his finance minister. Singh told Mark Tully a British journalist in 2005:

“On the day (Narasimha Rao) was formulating his cabinet, he sent his Personal Secretary to me saying, ‘The PM would like you to become the Minister of Finance’. I didn’t take it seriously. He eventually tracked me down the next morning, rather angry, and demanded that I get dressed up and come to Rashtrapati Bhavan for the swearing in”.

During his term as prime minister, Manmohan Singh continued to encourage growth in the Indian market, along with his finance minister, P. Chidambaram, presided over a period where the Indian economy grew with an 8 to 9% economic growth rate. In 2007, India achieved its highest GDP growth rate of 9% and became the second fastest growing major economy in the world.

A Bollywood film titled The Accidental Prime Minister was released, portraying the life of Manmohan Singh. Directed by Vijay Gutte and written by Mayank Tewari. It was based on the 2014 memoir of the same name by Sanjaya Baru, who served as Singh’s media advisor during his tenure as Prime Minister.

Islamabad (Web Desk) – The Pakistani Government on Monday announced the public holidays for the year of 2025. Holidays notification was also issued by the Cabinet Division, outlining the public holidays for the year of 2025, including national, Islamic, and minority-specific observances. The dates of holidays for Muslim festivals would be based on the appearance of moon as usual.

  2. 23rd March (Pakistan Day)
  3. Eid al-Fitr (Muslims Festival)
  4. Easter (for minorities)

  7. Ashura (10th Muharram)
  8. Independence Day (Pakistan)
  9. Mawlid al-Nabi (Eid Milad-un-Nabi)
  10. Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas (25 December).

According to the 2025’s calendar, the first holiday will be on 5 February, followed by Pakistan Day on March 28 and Youm-e-Takbeer on May 28 will also be a holiday.

Public holidays have also been announced for Ashura (Muharram Ul Haram), Eid Milad-un-Nabi and Iqbal Day (November 9).

Diabetic kidney disease, or diabetic nephropathy, is a condition where high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, making it difficult for them to filter waste from the blood. If left unchecked, diabetic kidney disease can progress to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.

The Burden of Diabetic Kidney Disease in Pakistan: In Pakistan, diabetes prevalence is alarmingly high, with approximately 33 million people diagnosed, making it one of the top countries in the world affected by this disease. With such high diabetes rates, the risk of developing diabetic kidney disease is also elevated. Nearly 40% of people with diabetes will eventually develop kidney disease. This is a heavy burden on both the healthcare system and families, as managing kidney disease is costly, and treatment options like dialysis or transplants are not accessible or affordable for everyone. A combination of factors, including poverty, limited healthcare access, and poor health infrastructure, contributes to the increasing burden and worsens the situation for a developing country like Pakistan.

Symptoms and Consequences of Diabetic Kidney Disease: Diabetic kidney disease usually develops slowly, and in its early stages, it may not show any noticeable symptoms, often earning it the label of a “silent” disease. Symptoms may appear only when the disease has advanced and can include swelling in the feet, shortness of breath, fatigue, poor appetite, difficulty concentrating, and reduced urine output. As the disease progresses, symptoms can become severe, leading to high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones, and an increased risk of infections. Ultimately, untreated kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival.

Screening and Diagnosis: Early Detection is Key: Given the high prevalence of diabetes in Pakistan, regular screening for kidney disease is essential, especially for those who have had diabetes for several years. Screening tests include simple urine tests to detect protein levels (an early sign of kidney damage) and blood tests to assess kidney function. Regular check-ups can detect kidney disease at its earliest stages, when it can be managed with lifestyle changes and medication to prevent further progression. It is recommended that people with diabetes undergo these tests at least once a year.

Preventing Diabetic Kidney Disease: Preventing diabetic kidney disease requires strict control of blood sugar levels, a healthy lifestyle, and regular monitoring. Here are some strategies to help reduce the risk:

  1. Control Blood Sugar: High blood sugar levels are the main cause of diabetic kidney disease. Managing blood sugar through diet, exercise, and medication is crucial. People with diabetes should work with their doctors to set and achieve healthy blood sugar goals.
  2. Monitor Blood Pressure: High blood pressure can worsen kidney disease. People with diabetes should keep their blood pressure under control, ideally below 130/80 mm Hg, through lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medication.
  3. Adopt a Healthy Diet: A balanced diet low in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats can help maintain kidney health. Eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is beneficial. Reducing salt intake also helps to control blood pressure.
  4. Stay Physically Active: Regular physical activity can improve blood sugar control, reduce blood pressure, and help maintain a healthy weight. Even moderate exercise, such as walking or cycling for 30 minutes a day, can make a difference.
  5. Avoid Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of kidney disease, and quitting can greatly benefit kidney health.

The Need for Preventive Strategies in Pakistan: With the high rates of diabetes and the growing number of people affected by diabetic kidney disease, it is essential to focus on preventive strategies at both individual and community levels. The study, led by Stanford University and co-authored by experts from renowned institutions including AKU, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, University of Southern California, and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, presents compelling evidence for a swift global phaseout of lead.

“Why do we allow trillions of dollars of damage to human health, entire ecosystems, and the global economy to accrue for the sake of $100 billion in benefits?” asks Dr Fatmi, Section Head of Environmental, Occupational Health, and Climate Change at AKU’s Community Health Sciences. The authors argue that despite its limited economic value, lead’s impact on health, productivity, and ecosystems is staggering, affecting life expectancy, cognitive development, and environmental health worldwide.

The paper reveals that 5.2 million tons of lead entered the environment in 2022 alone, largely driven by demand for low-cost lead-acid batteries. Lead, classified as a potent neurotoxin, is no longer necessary for the global economy. The paper asserts that readily available, safer alternatives make lead’s continued use and production both outdated and economically unwise. Notably, lead-based products generate less than $100 billion annually, an amount dwarfed by the economic and societal costs of lead-related health burdens, premature death, and lost productivity.

The authors urge a comprehensive approach to lead removal, including a proposed phaseout by 2035, a tax on lead products, and international regulations to classify lead as toxic waste. Given the limitations of current recycling practices in many regions, particularly low- and middle-income countries, the paper advocates for a paradigm shift, pushing for safer, lead-free alternatives and enhanced regulatory frameworks.

“The data is clear: the cost to human health and the environment is simply too high to ignore,” Dr Fatmi emphasizes. The study also suggests that a global treaty could inspire a multi-pronged approach, including donor-funded research into alternatives, policy initiatives, and investment in low-cost substitutes.

This collaborative work signifies a growing movement among scientists and policy experts to end lead exposure and foster a healthier, more sustainable global economy.

In the same age group, Mustafa Maqbool from Sindh also set national records in the boys 10 and under category, clocking 31.60 seconds in the 50m freestyle and 1:12.88 in the 100m freestyle.

In the boys 12 and under category, Aban Kashif from Punjab set a national record in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 3:01.96, while his brother, Dayyan Kashif, set a new record in the boys 14 and under 200m breaststroke, finishing in 2:40.87. Syed Muhammad Daniyal Hatim from the Army team also set a record in the boys 16 and under 200m freestyle, completing the race in 2:01.46. Additionally, Team Punjab set a new national record in the boys 16 and under 4x100m medley relay, finishing in 4:29.69.

In the girls’ events, Zoya Omair Kazi from Sindh set two national records in the girls 12 and under category, with times of 2:53.62 in the 200m individual medley and 3:12.49 in the 200m breaststroke. Hareem Malik, also from Sindh, broke two national records in the girls 16 and under category, achieving 5:47.79 in the 400m individual medley and 2:58.91 in the 200m breaststroke.

This six-year partnership between AKU and Roche has benefited over 1500 cancer patients treated at AKUH. What brings the two organisations together is their shared goal of making high-quality life-saving cancer treatments accessible to patients who can’t afford them.

“The fight against cancer in Pakistan is one that is far bigger than any single institution. It’s one that demands that people and institutions across the country join hands and work together. And that is precisely what Roche and AKU are doing”, said AKU President, Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin at the appreciation event.

The Aga Khan University Hospital’s Patient Welfare Programme brings together individual and corporate donors like Roche, Pakistan to support patients from low-income backgrounds to access critical treatments for complex diseases such as cancer. Since 1986, the welfare programme has disbursed nearly 35 billion rupees in welfare support, helping millions of individuals from across Pakistan to benefit from quality healthcare services at AKUH.

Ms Hafsa Shamsie, Managing Director, Roche, Pakistan lauded the joint efforts in improving patients’ journey as they battle cancer. “I see it as a utopian ideal partnership. Why? Because we provide standard-of-care medication, and Aga Khan University Hospital is a Centre of Excellence,” she said.

In celebration of World Heart Month, the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) hosted two major community events, “Mini Marathon” and “World Heart Day Ride”, led by Dr Saulat Fatimi, Section Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at AKUH, in collaboration with the cycling group Docs on Wheels. Together, these events aimed at promoting heart health and wellness among people.

The 3.2 km “Mini Marathon”, held on 22 September, was made successful by a turnout of over 400 participants including the leadership, doctors, nurses, staff, and enthusiastic students of the Aga Khan University (AKU). The participants came together donned in red, the colour symbolizing heart health, to show their commitment to promoting healthy living. A poster competition was also organized, and prizes were distributed among the best-ranked artists.

Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin, President and Vice-Chancellor of Aga Khan University, shared his enthusiasm about the event’s impact, stating, “At the Aga Khan University Hospital, we are deeply committed to the health and well-being of our community. Events like these are not just activities; they are a rallying call to action for everyone to embrace a more active and informed lifestyle.”

Continuing the promotion of the cause, AKUH also organized a “World Heart Day Ride” on 29 September to mark World Heart Day and promote cardiovascular wellness.

The event kicked off at the crack of dawn at the AKU Sports and Rehabilitation Centre, with participants arriving in a wave of red attire. The ride attracted a diverse group of around 600 cyclists, including students, doctors, nurses, hospital leadership, and members of civil society, all united in the cause of raising heart health awareness. The cyclists rode a carefully planned route, passing from Karsaz Road to Shahrah-e-Faisal, then to Drigh Road, and finally returning to the AKU campus.

Dr Saulat Fatimi said, “Around half of the people with heart diseases are diagnosed after their death. Our motive behind activities such as mini marathons and cycling events is to create awareness about how to care for your heart and be mindful of regular heart health checkups.”

Both events concluded with a hearty breakfast at the AKU Sports Centre.

These events are in line with AKUH’s enduring commitment to fostering healthy living within the community. S M Tanveer expresses disappointment over 2 percent cut in policy rate

S M Tanveer, Patron-in-Chief United Business Group (UBG), has expressed disappointment over the monetary policy, saying that the rate cut by 200 bps or 2 percent is too little, too late in the context of price data – domestically & internationally.

He said the core inflation is going to be around 7.0 percent for the month of September 2024 as per market estimates. On top of that, international oil prices have come down to a 3-year low at less than $70 per barrel this week.

Tanveer said the business community was expecting that the SBP had all it takes to announce a substantive rate cut; but, it has still held on regressive, counterproductive, and contractionary monetary policy practices.

He pointed out that the cost of doing business; ease of doing business and access to finance in Pakistan is at the lowest as compared to all its competitors in the export markets. The only viable solution to get back on economic growth trajectory is to support industry and exports, he added.

He said State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) should focus on core inflation rather than general inflation on an immediate basis as it excludes the most volatile and irrelevant components of the basket; i.e. food and energy. The government must ensure the effectiveness of price control measures through vigilant actions against hoarding, price gouging and malpractices.

Tanveer explained that despite the progressive and major hikes in the policy rates from 9.75 percent to 22 percent over a period 6 quarters in 2022 and 2023, general inflation remained stubbornly high and didn’t respond to the policy rate in Pakistan. We should start making our monetary and fiscal policies based on our own ground realities and hard facts, he added.

He said the interest rate should come down to 12 percent immediately to enable Pakistani exporters to some extent to compete in the regional and international export markets by reducing the cost of capital in a meaningful way. This step should be accompanied by the fulfilment of the government’s promise to rationalize electricity tariffs for industry; and, renegotiate independent power producers’ (IPPs) agreements, he stressed.

Sports and Youth Affairs Department Government of Sindh is providing help to the youth for sports, recreation, new start-ups and also providing training in digital technology.

This was stated by the Secretary Government of Sindh for Sports and Youth Affairs Department Mr. Jalaluddin Mahar on the occasion of ‘’International Youth Day Festival’’.

Addressing the youth Mr. Jalaluddin Mahar Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs gave importance on the vital role of youth in shaping our nation’s future.

The International Youth Day Festival was organized by the Youth Parliament in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs Government of Sindh at Port Grand Karachi.

The festival was attended by the members and friends of the Youth Parliament. At the stage activity new members of the Youth Parliament contesting in the coming Shadow Cabinet Elections 2024-2026 of Youth Parliament, were given Membership cards by the Chief Guest. The members were given the opportunity for an introduction and to describe their vision for joining the Youth Parliament. After that some stage performances of dance and singing were presented arranged by the organizers for the entertainment of guests and visitors. In the end a cake cutting ceremony was also arranged.

Dr. Huma Bukhari Co-Chairperson New Ports Institute of Communications & Economics also attended the event as honorable guest and in her keynote speech she appreciated the motivated and energetic youth performing various tasks under the leadership of Mr. Rizwan Jaffar the founder of Youth Parliament.

Chairman Youth Parliament Mr. Rizwan Jaffar highlighted the incredible potential of our future leaders, he briefed the Chief Guest about previous achievements and upcoming projects of Youth Parliament, which are aimed to inspire and empower our youth. He later thanked all the participants for attending the International Youth Day Festival.
