Mahrang Baloch, a courageous and dedicated Baloch human rights activist, has been at the forefront of the struggle for justice and an end to human rights abuses in Balochistan, Pakistan. Born around 1993, Mahrang is currently an MBBS student. Her family’s relocation to Karachi from Quetta was prompted by her mother’s medical needs. In December 2009, Mahrang’s father was forcibly abducted by Pakistan security forces on his way to the hospital in Karachi. This tragic event marked the beginning of her activism.

Mahrang Baloch’s activism has been characterized by her unwavering commitment to seeking justice and equality for the Baloch people. She gained recognition in the student resistance movement after protesting her father’s abduction. Since then, she has been one of the prominent figures in the Baloch resistance movement, protesting the government’s extraction of natural resources from Balochistan and leading protests against the proposed removal of the quota system at educational institutions.

Mahrang Baloch’s family has faced multiple instances of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. Her father was found dead with signs of torture in July 2011. later, her brother was abducted in December 2017 and detained for over three months. These personal experiences have driven her to become a symbol of resistance among the Baloch community, fighting against extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances.

Mahrang Baloch’s female-led protests have gained significant attention due to their peaceful nature and determination to continue advocating for justice, despite facing challenges and opposition. The protesters have been successful in raising awareness about the plight of the Baloch community and the need for accountability for human rights violations. Their rallies, such as the one held in Islamabad in December 2023, have resulted in hundreds of arrests and the use of tear gas, highlighting the intensity of the struggle for justice.
