Federal Cabinet Fails to Decide on Issuing Funds to Election Commission for Punjab Elections

The federal cabinet of Pakistan has failed to come to a decision regarding issuing funds to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the upcoming Punjab elections. During an important session chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the cabinet members discussed expanding the scope of consultations for issuing funds to the ECP. However, they ultimately decided to take the matter to the Parliament due to confusion caused by two different rulings from the Supreme Court (SC). Some members suggested partially releasing funds to the election commission to avoid facing contempt of court charges.

The cabinet expressed reservations about the SC’s three-member bench’s verdict and stressed the importance of maintaining the supremacy of the Parliament. They also held consultations regarding the judicial reforms bill ahead of the joint session of the Parliament tomorrow. Lawmakers of their respective parliamentary committees will attend the joint sitting of the Parliament tomorrow. The federal cabinet also urged conducting elections across the country on the same day.

The delay in issuing funds to the ECP has raised concerns about the timely and fair conduct of the upcoming Punjab elections. Without adequate funds, the ECP may not be able to ensure a level playing field for all political parties, leading to allegations of rigging and unfairness.

The federal government needs to prioritize the timely and fair conduct of elections in the country, as it is essential for upholding democracy and ensuring the legitimacy of the government. The ECP plays a crucial role in ensuring free and fair elections and must be provided with the necessary resources to carry out its duties effectively.

The federal cabinet’s indecision regarding issuing funds to the ECP for the Punjab elections has raised concerns about the timely and fair conduct of the elections. The matter has been taken to the Parliament for further consultations, and the federal government must prioritize providing the ECP with the necessary resources to ensure the legitimacy of the elections.

Pakistani government calls for a joint session of parliament to reconsider Supreme Court bill

The Pakistani government has called for a joint session of parliament after President Arif Alvi returned the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023 unsigned. The bill was aimed at limiting the powers of the chief justice of Pakistan. According to the president, the bill goes beyond the jurisdiction of parliament and could be challenged as colorable legislation.

The National Assembly Speaker, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, has called for the joint session on April 10th, 2023, in response to the president’s decision. The joint session will discuss the Supreme Court bill and reconsider its contents.

The prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has criticized President Alvi’s decision to return the bill unsigned, calling it “most unfortunate.” In a tweet, the prime minister accused the president of acting like a worker of the ruling party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and failing to fulfill his constitutional duties. He further claimed that President Alvi has belittled his office through his actions and questioned his loyalty to the Constitution and the demands of his office.

The Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023, aimed to curtail the powers of the chief justice of Pakistan, including the power to form benches and conduct suo motu actions. The bill was passed by the National Assembly but was rejected by the president for reconsideration.

The joint session of parliament provides an opportunity to discuss the bill’s contents and revise it according to the president’s objections. The session will allow for a more comprehensive discussion of the bill’s implications and ensure that it is constitutionally valid.

The government’s decision to call for a joint session of parliament demonstrates its commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law. The joint session will provide an opportunity for all members of parliament to discuss the bill’s contents and express their views.

The joint session of parliament on April 10th, 2023, will be a critical moment in the country’s legislative process. The session will allow for a more comprehensive discussion of the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023, and ensure that it complies with the Constitution. Apple Launches Apple Pay Later BNPL Service in the US

Apple has launched its own buy now, pay later (BNPL) service, called Apple Pay Later, in the United States. The new service allows users to split purchases into four payments spread over six weeks, with no interest or fees. It will initially be offered to select users, with plans for a full roll-out in the coming months.

Users can get loans between $50 and $1,000 for online and in-app purchases made on iPhones and iPads with merchants that accept Apple Pay. According to the company, more than 85% of US retailers accept Apple Pay.

The launch of Apple Pay Later has the potential to disrupt the fintech sector dominated by firms like Affirm Holdings and Swedish payments company Klarna. Affirm’s shares fell more than 7%, while PayPal closed about 1% lower following Apple’s announcement.

Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell, said, “Apple Pay Later will absolutely wallop some of the other players. Other companies would’ve taken a look at Apple’s announcement today because they are a ubiquitous name. This will take a bite out of the market share of other players.”

The BNPL sector experienced a surge in demand during the pandemic as pandemic-related lockdowns turned shoppers to online payment platforms. However, rising interest rates and inflation dampened purchasing power, forcing consumers to tighten their purse strings. Digital payments behemoths including PayPal and Block have expanded into the sector through acquisitions, while Affirm went public in a multi-billion dollar listing.

“We expect Apple to tread cautiously, especially in this macro environment,” said Christopher Brendler, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, alluding to its decision to not use a partner and underwrite, fund, and collect on the loans directly. Apple Pay Later is enabled through the Mastercard Installments program, with Goldman Sachs serving as the issuer of the Mastercard payment credential.

Apple’s entry into the BNPL market with Apple Pay Later could have a significant impact on the sector, with its large user base and widespread acceptance potentially posing a threat to existing players. However, analysts caution that Apple may need to tread carefully in the current economic environment.

Pakistan’s President Alvi Returns Supreme Court Bill, Drawing Criticism from PM Shehbaz Sharif

Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi has returned the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 unsigned, a move that has drawn the ire of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The bill aims to limit the powers of the chief justice, including the formation of benches and suo motu.

However, the PTI has vehemently opposed the legislation, calling it an “attack on the judiciary”. President Alvi has sought advice from Imran Khan, the PTI chairman, on several key issues since the formation of the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s government in April 2021, which PM Shehbaz Sharif cited as evidence of Alvi being a PTI worker.

PM Sharif castigated Alvi in a hard-hitting tweet, calling his move “most unfortunate” and accusing him of following Imran Khan’s orders rather than fulfilling his constitutional duties. The prime minister further stated that Alvi had belittled his office by acting as a PTI worker, claiming that Alvi was more beholden to Khan than the Constitution or his office’s demands.

The bill was passed by both houses of parliament in March and sent to the president for assent amidst a political and constitutional crisis over the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elections. Alvi’s refusal to sign the legislation has plunged the country into further turmoil, with the government expected to push it through a joint session of parliament.

In accordance with the Constitution’s Article 75, Alvi has returned the bill for reconsideration to parliament, stating that it prima facie exceeds the competence of the parliament and can be assailed as colorable legislation.

In his letter to PM Sharif, Alvi noted that the Supreme Court Rules 1980 had been made and in force, validated and adopted by the Constitution itself under enabling provisions such as Article 191. He added that any tinkering with these time-tested rules could be seen as interference with the court’s internal workings, autonomy, and independence.

The disagreement between Pakistan’s president and prime minister over the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 underscores the tensions between the government and judiciary, which have persisted since the PDM came to power.

The PTI and the government have accused the judiciary of overstepping its bounds in several cases, leading to a constitutional crisis. The return of the bill by the president will likely deepen the crisis, but it remains to be seen whether it will result in a resolution that satisfies all parties.

Iran’s Schoolgirl Poisoning Crisis Continues to Cause Panic and Fear

0

Iran continues to grapple with a mysterious wave of schoolgirl poisonings that have affected more than 5,000 students in over 230 schools since November 2022. On April 8th, local media reported that dozens of schoolgirls were poisoned in several schools across the country. The majority of the affected schools have been girls’ schools, with students experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, shortness of breath, and headaches, among others. In some cases, the poisoning has led to fainting and hospitalization.

The most recent poisoning incident occurred in the town of Haftkel, in the southwestern province of Khuzestan. Sixty students were poisoned in a girls’ school. In the northwestern province of Ardabil, five schools reported incidents of poisoning, with affected students experiencing symptoms of anxiety, shortness of breath, and headaches. In the town of Urmia, the capital of West Azerbaijan province, a number of schoolgirls were taken to the hospital on April 8th after feeling sick.

The cause of the poisoning incidents remains unknown, and officials have yet to provide any concrete explanations. A national fact-finding committee was formed in response to the poisonings, and its head, MP Hamidreza Kazemi, has stated that the committee’s final report will be published in two weeks. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, has called for severe sentences, up to the death penalty, for those found responsible for the poisonings, which he has described as “unforgivable crimes.”

The poisoning incidents began two months after the start of a protest movement in Iran sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who died in custody on September 16th, 2022, following her arrest for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women. It remains unclear if the poisonings are related to the protest movement or if they are the work of a group with a specific agenda.

The ongoing schoolgirl poisonings have caused fear and panic among parents and students across Iran. Authorities have implemented measures such as increased security at schools and regular inspections of classrooms and school grounds in an effort to prevent further incidents. However, until the cause of the poisonings is determined, it is unclear if these measures will be effective in protecting students.

Iran’s schoolgirl poisoning crisis continues to be a cause for concern, with the number of affected schools and students rising each week. While officials are working to determine the cause of the poisonings and prevent further incidents, parents and students remain anxious and fearful for their safety.

Gold Prices in Pakistan Steady Near Record Highs as Investors Seek Inflation Hedge

0

Gold prices in Pakistan remained unchanged at Rs214,600 per tola on Saturday, but they continued to trade near record highs reached earlier this week. The precious metal’s appeal as a hedge against a depreciating rupee remained intact, leading to a surge in its demand. The price of gold (24 carats) remained stable at Rs183,985 per 10 grams. The price of gold rose by Rs5,100, or 2.43%, per tola during the week ended April 8. However, the meager recovery of the Pakistan rupee against the dollar during the last two sessions pulled the prices of the yellow metal down.

Gold is often seen as a hedge against inflation, and its rate is hovering around a historic high after Pakistan’s monthly inflation in March soared to an all-time high level of 35.4% from a year earlier. The gold price moves in line with the rupee-dollar parity as the country meets almost all its gold demand through imports, and traders follow its international price in setting rates in the country.

The association also mentioned that the price of gold is Rs7,000 per tola “under cost” in Pakistan compared to the Dubai market, showing that the Pakistani gold market is currently cheaper than the global market. Silver prices in the domestic market remained unchanged at Rs2,450 per tola and Rs2,100.48 per 10 grams. In the international market, gold prices remained unchanged at $2,008 per ounce.

Pakistan’s gold market is directly influenced by the international market and currency exchange rates. The demand for gold in Pakistan is mainly driven by the jewelry industry, with gold being considered an essential part of cultural ceremonies and weddings. Pakistan’s increasing population, growing middle class, and increasing disposable income are expected to drive the demand for gold even further.

The gold prices in Pakistan remained steady near record highs, primarily driven by its appeal as a hedge against a depreciating rupee and inflation. The prices of gold are closely linked to the international market, and traders follow its international price in setting rates in the country. With Pakistan’s growing population and increasing disposable income, the demand for gold is expected to rise even further in the coming years.

Is it Safe to Eat the Other Berries if One is Moldy?

0

If you’ve ever opened a container of berries and found a moldy one in the mix, you may wonder if it’s safe to eat the rest of them. The short answer is that it’s possible that one moldy berry could ruin the rest, depending on the type of fruit and the extent of the mold growth.

Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in warm, humid environments, making fruits and vegetables a prime target for growth. Mold spores can quickly spread throughout a container of berries, contaminating the other fruit in the process. This is especially true if the berries are touching or if the container is tightly packed.

The danger with moldy berries is that they can produce mycotoxins, which are toxic compounds that can cause illness if ingested in large enough quantities. Mycotoxins can also be produced by mold that is not visible to the naked eye, which is why it’s important to be cautious when consuming any fruit or vegetable that shows signs of mold growth.

So, what should you do if you find a moldy berry in your container of fruit? The safest option is to discard the entire container or at least remove the moldy berry and inspect the others carefully before consuming them. Look for any signs of mold growth, including discoloration, soft spots, or a musty smell.

It’s also a good idea to wash your berries before eating them, even if they don’t appear to have any mold growth. Washing can help remove any residual mold spores or bacteria that may be present on the surface of the fruit.

While one moldy berry may not necessarily ruin the rest, it’s best to err on the side of caution when it comes to moldy fruit. If in doubt, it’s always better to be safe than sorry and discard the entire container or any fruit that shows signs of mold growth. By taking these precautions, you can help ensure that you’re consuming safe and healthy produce.

This display of mutual respect and admiration between Sajal and Adnan is a great example of how actors can lift each other up instead of competing with one another. The Legend of Maula Jatt star Humaima Malick and former actor Noor Bukhari recently spoke about the importance of supporting fellow artists, and this exchange between Sajal and Adnan serves as a reminder of the power of positivity in the industry.

As fans, we often forget that actors are also human beings with their own insecurities and vulnerabilities. It’s easy to get caught up in the drama and gossip surrounding the industry, but it’s important to remember that artists are not here to entertain us 24/7. They have their own lives, relationships, and emotions, and it’s crucial to treat them with the respect and kindness they deserve.

The exchange between Sajal Aly and Adnan Samad Khan on Instagram is a heartwarming reminder of the power of positivity and mutual respect in the entertainment industry. Let’s hope that more actors follow in their footsteps and lift each other up instead of tearing each other down.

0

Pakistan’s cricket team is gearing up for its upcoming home series against New Zealand starting on April 14, with captain Babar Azam leading the charge. In preparation, the team has been undergoing rigorous training camps, and recently, Azam was spotted facing off against left-handed all-rounder Imad Wasim in the nets at Gaddafi Stadium.

Despite past speculation about tensions between the two players, their interactions during the training session appeared to be cordial. Previously, Imad Wasim had been stripped of his captaincy of the Karachi Kings in favor of Azam, which led to rumors of strained relations between the two players. Furthermore, Wasim’s below-par performance led to his replacement by Muhammad Nawaz, and certain statements made by Wasim further fueled controversy and contributed to tensions between the two players.

However, during the recent training session, there were no signs of any hostility between Azam and Wasim, and the two players appeared to be pushing each other to perform at their best. With both players considered key figures in the Pakistani cricket team, their ability to work together effectively will be critical to the team’s success in the upcoming series.

Fans of Pakistani cricket will be eagerly watching to see how the team fares against New Zealand, with hopes high for a strong showing from Azam, Wasim, and the rest of the squad. With Azam leading from the front and players like Wasim pushing themselves to perform at their best, there’s every reason to believe that the team will be able to rise to the challenge and emerge victorious.

Despite their busy careers, the couple has always made it a priority to spend time with their family. In an interview with People magazine, Reynolds said, “Blake and I don’t do movies at the same time. If she is doing a movie in Thailand and I were doing a movie in Vancouver, we would just never see each other. We operate as a unit, and that works really well for us.”

The couple’s recent family vacation seems to be a much-needed break for them, and it’s clear that they are enjoying their time together. It’s always heartwarming to see celebrities taking time off from their busy lives to spend quality time with their loved ones.

Gillian Anderson’s Absence Creates Chaos for The Crown’s Producers

0

Producers of Netflix’s hit show, The Crown, are reportedly facing a frenzy as they were unable to bring back Gillian Anderson to reprise her role as Margaret Thatcher for the show’s upcoming sixth season. Anderson’s absence is said to be due to scheduling conflicts, leaving the show’s producers scrambling to make changes to the script and casting.

Anderson won critical acclaim and an Emmy award for her portrayal of the former British Prime Minister in the show’s fourth season. Her absence in the upcoming season is seen as a blow to production, with insiders suggesting that casting issues are causing problems behind the scenes.

According to reports, the original script for a dinner scene involving Thatcher, Princess Anne, and others attending for the Queen and Philip had to be altered because Anderson was not available to play Thatcher. The new scene, however, has been rewritten to ensure that viewers will not notice any issues in the background.

The Crown has been a highly successful show for Netflix, with each season chronicling a different era of the British monarchy. The upcoming sixth season is set to cover the period of the early 2000s and will feature new cast members, including Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.

While the show has faced some controversy in the past over its portrayal of the royal family, it has been widely praised for its attention to detail and high production values. The absence of a key cast member such as Anderson is sure to be a challenge for the show’s producers, but they have a track record of overcoming obstacles and delivering quality entertainment.

The Crown’s producers will have to find a way to move forward without Anderson, but the show’s loyal fans will no doubt be eagerly anticipating the next season, regardless of any casting changes or behind-the-scenes drama.

Incorporating Vegetables: A Fresh Approach to Promoting Longevity

0

The longevity approach to wellness emphasizes the importance of making small, consistent changes to our lifestyle habits that will have long-term positive effects on our health. By prioritizing habits such as regular exercise, healthy eating, stress management, and social connectedness, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

When it comes to diet, vegetables should be at the forefront. They are nutrient-rich and calorie-controlled, and research proves that eating a diet rich in vegetables helps to stave off chronic conditions. Vegetables also influence our gut health, improving the gut’s microbiome – the trillions of bacteria in our GI tract – which play a role in maintaining the immune system.

But it’s not just about physical health. According to Kim Hofmann, a registered dietitian and wellness expert, diet is one of the most significant influencers of our health, well-being, and the aging process. However, the problematic practice of labeling foods as either “good” or “bad” and constantly depriving ourselves of the foods we enjoy can lead to a host of negative consequences, including excessive cravings, overeating, and even binge eating. Furthermore, depriving ourselves of certain foods can cause us to develop a distaste for more nutritious options, ultimately sabotaging our efforts to maintain a healthy diet.

Rather than focusing on deprivation, Hofmann suggests a more balanced and sustainable approach to our diets, one that includes incorporating more vegetables. Not only do vegetables influence our gut health and help prevent chronic illnesses, but they also have benefits for our skin, inflammation levels, and even our sleep patterns.

“It may come as a surprise that vegetables literally feed your face. They are loaded with nutrients that help maintain healthy skin and reduce damage caused by UV light. An increase in daily intake of veggies can temper chronic inflammation that helps slow down the aging process and loss of collagen that accelerates the appearance of wrinkles,” explains Hofmann.

As global rates of adult overweight and obesity continue to climb, it’s time to prioritize our health and well-being through sustainable lifestyle changes. Incorporating more vegetables into our diets is a simple yet effective way to promote longevity and well-being.

Promoting longevity and well-being requires a holistic approach to health that includes consistent lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, stress management, social connectedness, and most importantly, a balanced and sustainable diet that incorporates more vegetables. By making small changes and prioritizing our health, we can reduce our risk of chronic illnesses and lead happier, healthier lives.

Political Uncertainty in Pakistan: Calls for Resignations from High-Ranking Officials

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President, Pervaiz Elahi, has demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for violating the Constitution, following the nullification of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s order to postpone Punjab elections. Elahi’s statement comes after the coalition government’s demand for Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Umar Ata Bandial, to step down from his post due to Justice Athar Minallah’s dissenting note on the suo motu regarding the delay in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab elections.

Elahi believes that it is unfair to ask the CJP to resign as he had respected the Constitution, but rather Shehbaz Sharif should resign for violating it. Furthermore, he urged the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to change its unconstitutional behavior or face the consequences.

Elahi accused Nawaz Sharif of trying to repeat the history of the 1990s, referencing the political unrest that occurred in Pakistan during that time. He also commented on the current situation, stating that institutions were not weak enough to fail to provide security in a provincial election and that the Supreme Court made its decision in favor of elections after seeing reports from institutions.

The demand for the resignation of the CJP by the federal government comes after Justice Athar Minallah’s dissenting note on the suo motu regarding the delay in KP and Punjab elections. Justice Minallah’s note stated that the postponement was justified as it would have allowed for better electoral arrangements, given the current situation of the pandemic.

The demand for resignations from high-ranking officials and political figures highlights the political unrest and uncertainty in Pakistan. While some individuals believe that the actions of certain figures have violated the Constitution, others disagree and believe that such actions were necessary given the current circumstances.

WhatsApp to Introduce New Feature Allowing Status Updates to be Shared on Facebook

WhatsApp, a messaging app owned by Meta, is reportedly working on a new feature that would allow users to share their status updates on Facebook Stories. According to the app-tracking website WaBetaInfo, the update called “share status updates” is currently in development and will be available in a future update. This optional feature will save time and effort for users as the status update will be shared as a Facebook Story without leaving the WhatsApp app.

Previously, users had to manually share their status updates on Facebook, but with this new feature, the process will become automatic. Users will remain in control over their status updates, as they can decide which status they want to share on Facebook. Additionally, this feature will be disabled by default and can be enabled within status privacy settings. Users can easily disable it whenever they want to.

The new feature will allow users to share their updates on Facebook with a wider audience, as the social media app has a much larger user base than WhatsApp. However, it is important to note that this feature is optional, and users can choose not to use it.

WaBetaInfo reported that the feature is not yet ready for release to beta testers. However, it is expected to be available in the near future. This update is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to integrate its various apps, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, and make it easier for users to share content across platforms.

This new feature could be beneficial for businesses that use WhatsApp as a customer communication tool, as they can now easily share updates with their Facebook audience. However, it also raises concerns about data privacy and security, as users may not want to share their WhatsApp status updates with a wider audience.

WhatsApp’s new feature to share status updates on Facebook Stories is currently under development and will be available in a future update. This optional feature will save time and effort for users and allow them to share their updates on Facebook with a wider audience. However, it also raises concerns about data privacy and security, and users should carefully consider whether they want to use this feature.

Samsung Employees Leak Sensitive Company Information on ChatGPT AI Bot

Samsung, one of the largest electronics conglomerates in the world, recently lifted the ban on the use of the AI bot ChatGPT to improve productivity and keep up with the latest technology. However, in less than three weeks after the ban was lifted, several employees accidentally leaked sensitive company information on the chatbot.

The leaked information reportedly includes measurement and other confidential details of an in-development semiconductor, as well as yield data from the company’s device solution and semiconductor business unit. According to a Korean report, the employees uploaded the program code, designed to identify defective equipment, for ‘code optimization’, shared a meeting recording with the bot to ‘auto-generate’ the minutes, and copied all the problematic source code of a semiconductor database download program, and entered it into ChatGPT to inquire about the solution.

As per the ChatGPT FAQs, “Your conversations may be reviewed by our AI trainers to improve our systems,” which means that the leaked information will now be accessible to Open AI. This incident has raised concerns about the use of AI bots in workplaces and the potential risks of data breaches.

In response to the incident, Samsung has taken ’emergency measures,’ including limiting the upload capacity to 1024 bytes per question and warning their employees that if a similar accident occurs even after emergency information protection measures are taken, access to ChatGPT may be blocked on the company network. Additionally, the company is reportedly considering building an in-house AI service to prevent such incidents in the future.

This incident highlights the importance of data security and the risks associated with the use of AI bots in the workplace. While these tools can be beneficial in improving productivity and efficiency, they also pose a significant risk to sensitive company information. Companies must implement strict policies and guidelines to ensure the safe and responsible use of AI bots in the workplace.

Google’s Ban on Lending Apps Accessing User Photos and Contacts to Combat Predatory Behavior

Google has announced that it will ban financial lending apps from accessing user photos, videos, and contacts to address predatory behavior from some lenders. The move comes in response to reports of harassment and intimidation of borrowers, particularly in countries like Kenya and India, where individuals who have received loans from mobile credit apps have been on the receiving end of harassment after failing to repay those loans.

The new policy, which goes into effect on May 31, aims to stop predatory loan apps from harassing and intimidating borrowers into paying outstanding debts, which often come with huge interest rates. In Pakistan, the policy also requires “country-specific licensing documentation to prove their ability to provide or facilitate personal loans.”

By accessing borrowers’ personal contacts and their personal images, debt collectors have sent manipulated photos to friends and family of debtors. According to TechCrunch, a number of these targeted individuals took their lives after the harassment.

In response to the widespread debt harassment, Google removed hundreds of loan apps from the Play Store in Kenya and over 2,000 loan apps from India last year. However, some lenders have found ways to circumvent Google’s policies by accessing user information through third-party apps.

The move by Google is a step in the right direction to address predatory behavior in the lending industry, but more needs to be done to protect vulnerable borrowers. Governments and regulatory bodies need to take a more proactive approach to regulating the lending industry and enforce stricter penalties for lenders who engage in predatory practices.

In addition, financial literacy programs and consumer protection agencies should be established to educate borrowers on the risks associated with taking out high-interest loans and provide them with information on alternative sources of financing.

Google’s decision to ban financial lending apps from accessing user photos, videos, and contacts is a positive step in addressing predatory behavior in the lending industry. However, it is just one of many steps that need to be taken to protect vulnerable borrowers from harassment and intimidation. Governments, regulatory bodies, and consumer protection agencies must work together to create a safe and fair lending environment for all borrowers.

WhatsApp’s New Recall Feature Helps Eliminate Messaging Errors

WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app, has launched a new feature aimed at reducing errors caused by users sending messages to the wrong person. The new feature, which has been dubbed the “Recall” function, allows users to delete messages sent to the wrong person or group within a five-minute window after the message has been sent.

The Recall function has been introduced in response to a growing number of errors and misunderstandings caused by messages being sent to the wrong person or group. This has been a particular problem for businesses using WhatsApp to communicate with customers, as incorrect messages can damage a company’s reputation and result in lost business.

The Recall function works by allowing users to select the message they want to delete and then tap the “Recall” button. This will delete the message from the recipient’s device and replace it with a notification that the message has been deleted. However, the feature only works if both the sender and recipient are using the latest version of WhatsApp.

The new feature has been welcomed by WhatsApp users who have experienced errors caused by sending messages to the wrong person or group. It is also likely to be welcomed by businesses that use WhatsApp as a communication tool, as it will help to reduce the risk of sending incorrect messages to customers.

In addition to the Recall function, WhatsApp has also introduced a number of other features aimed at improving the user experience. These include the ability to send photos and videos that disappear after they have been viewed, the ability to send GIFs, and the ability to send messages without an internet connection.

Overall, the introduction of the Recall function is a positive development for WhatsApp users, as it will help to reduce the risk of errors caused by sending messages to the wrong person or group. However, it is important to note that the feature only works if both the sender and recipient are using the latest version of WhatsApp, so users should make sure they have updated their app to ensure they can take advantage of the new feature.

Pakistan will not allow treaty modification

0

Pakistan’s Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman, has confirmed that the country will not allow India to unilaterally modify the Indus Waters Treaty, which manages water resources between the two nations.

Responding to a calling-attention notice in the Senate, the minister stressed that any changes to the treaty must be agreed upon by both parties. She claimed that a vague letter from India seeking the treaty’s revision had been issued by the Modi government for domestic consumption as elections were due in India next year. The minister also accused India of deliberately accusing Pakistan of violating the treaty, with no clarity on how such violations had been committed. She added that the Permanent Indus Commission, as defined in the treaty, was the appropriate forum to raise and discuss concerns. Pakistan had raised objections to the construction of controversial dams, including Baglihar, Kishan Ganga, and Ratle, by India on the rivers meant for Pakistan, and work was underway to enhance water storage capacity in the country.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), expressed concern that Pakistan had not given an effective, solid, and bold response to India’s notice of January 25 seeking the treaty’s revision. He suggested that national unity was essential to counter India, pointing to a message given by China during his recent tour that all political parties should work for the interests of Pakistan and its people by going beyond their party lines and personal political affiliations.

In another highlight of the day’s proceedings, Minister of State for Law and Justice Shahadat Awan proposed forming a separate court to hear constitutional cases, in addition to a federal Supreme Court for normal cases. The minister revealed that there were over 380,000 cases pending in superior courts, with the Lahore High Court having the highest number of cases at 179,425. The proposal was made in response to a calling-attention notice on the issue of pending cases.

Pakistan’s commitment to the Indus Waters Treaty and its efforts to enhance water storage capacity in the country are commendable. However, national unity is essential to counter external threats, including India’s attempts to revise the treaty. The proposal to form a separate court for constitutional cases could help reduce the backlog of pending cases, but its feasibility needs to be assessed in light of the existing legal system.

Pakistan’s Judicial Crisis Raises Concerns for Investors and Democracy

0

Former prime minister and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has expressed concerns about the brewing judicial crises in Pakistan. He warned that foreign investors may be getting a troubling message after the Pakistani government’s decision to not accept the Supreme Court’s decision in the Punjab polls delay case.

The federal government demanded that Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial step down, claiming that his position had become “controversial” after Justice Athar Minallah’s note in the case. Justice Minallah stated that the Supreme Court’s suo motu notice over the delay in the announcement of provincial assembly elections was dismissed by a majority 4-3 ruling. This ruling was rejected by the government, who labeled it a “minority verdict,” with the National Assembly also passing a resolution against the top court.

Imran Khan took to Twitter to express his concerns over the situation, warning that investors may lack confidence in a country’s judicial system if the government disregards court orders. He said, “Investors need security of contracts & that means faith in judicial system. What confidence can they have when govt itself casting aside SC orders? This happens in a banana republic.”

Imran Khan also claimed that the sedition cases filed against him and the imprisonment of senior party leader Ali Amin Gandapur are attempts to undermine their party’s ability to contest elections. He alleged that this was part of a “London Plan” in which Nawaz Sharif was given assurances that PTI would be crushed before elections through fake cases and imprisonment of its leadership.

The government’s refusal to accept the Supreme Court’s decision has raised concerns about the state of the country’s democracy and judicial system. It remains to be seen how this situation will be resolved and what impact it will have on the country’s economy and its relations with foreign investors.

This situation is concerning for Pakistan, which is currently struggling with an economic crisis and needs the support of foreign investors to stabilize its economy. The lack of faith in the judicial system and government’s disregard for court orders may deter foreign investors from investing in the country, which could further exacerbate its economic crisis.

The PTI’s call for early elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces is part of its campaign to force an early general election. However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has rejected Imran Khan’s call for an early general election, and his government had backed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) delay in the votes in the two provinces to Oct 8.

The situation in Pakistan is concerning, and it remains to be seen how it will be resolved. The government’s refusal to accept the Supreme Court’s decision and the lack of faith in the judicial system may deter foreign investors from investing in the country, which could further exacerbate its economic crisis. The PTI’s call for early elections is part of its campaign to force an early general election, but the Prime Minister has rejected this call. The future of Pakistan’s democracy and its relations with foreign investors remains uncertain.

The BRT system is a common mode of transportation in many developed cities around the world, and the Karachi Urban Mobility Project is an essential step towards modernizing the transport infrastructure of the city. The BRT system will also provide a safe and comfortable mode of transportation for women, who often face harassment and security issues when using public transport.

The Sindh Minister’s directive to accelerate the BRT project in Karachi is a positive step towards improving the city’s transportation infrastructure. The BRT system will not only provide a reliable and efficient mode of transportation but will also contribute to the economic growth of the city. Security Concerns in Punjab

0

The Punjab Police has completed its preparations to provide security during the upcoming polls on May 14, in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. However, police officials have stated that they may not be able to provide security according to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s formula.

The Election Commission has declared more than 30% of the 53,000 polling stations as sensitive, requiring 11 personnel each, while eight officials will be required for the remaining stations. This means that a total of 400,000 personnel will be required to provide security during the election in Punjab. However, only 100,000 security officials can be provided across the province, including Lahore.

To ensure that security is maintained during the polls, more than 35,000 policemen will perform duties in the Lahore Police department. Additionally, 50,000 officials will be assigned to provide security during rallies, meetings, and processions. A total of 7,000 personnel will also be deployed to sensitive installations across the province.

Despite these measures, police officials have stated that they will not be able to provide security as per the election commission’s formula, as they do not have sufficient resources to fulfill the requirement of 400,000 personnel. Therefore, the Punjab Police will provide a security plan by April 10, based on its existing resources.

The upcoming polls in Punjab are significant as they will determine the future of the province. The government has been facing numerous challenges, including a struggling economy, power outages, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These issues have created a sense of unrest among the public, and the upcoming elections will provide an opportunity for them to voice their opinions and select leaders who they believe can bring about positive change.

The Punjab Police has completed its preparations for the upcoming elections, but it remains to be seen if they will be able to provide security according to the election commission’s formula. With only a limited number of personnel available, the police will need to work within their existing resources to ensure that the polls are conducted in a secure and peaceful manner.

Pakistan’s Finance Minister Cancels US Trip

0

Pakistan’s finance minister Ishaq Dar has cancelled his visit to the United States where he was due to meet with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) management in an attempt to revive the stalled bailout package. Sources suggest that political uncertainty and developing judicial crises have led to the decision to cancel the trip. Dar had planned to address concerns regarding the continuity of the government, future economic plans, and bridging the trust deficit with multilateral lenders. Minister for Economic Affairs Sardar Ayaz Sadiq will also not be attending the World Bank-IMF spring meetings due to the prevailing uncertain political conditions. This comes at a crucial time as Pakistan was hoping to raise $6 billion in additional loans to meet the last IMF condition.

The cancellation of Dar’s trip could lead to the cancellation of meetings with his Saudi Arabia counterpart and the UK state minister for development. Instead, Finance Secretary Hamed Yaqoob Sheikh and Economic Affairs Secretary Kazim Niaz will represent the government at the WB-IMF spring meetings. Although a secretary was considered equal to a deputy minister, they might still be able to meet some of the high-ranking foreign officials.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Finance Tariq Bajwa might replace Dar. However, due to diplomatic protocol issues, the PM’s special assistant is lower in rank and might not be able to meet with the presidents of various multilateral institutions and finance ministers of different countries. Dar had scheduled meetings with the presidents of the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank – the three multilateral creditors that were crucial for Pakistan’s plans to raise $6 billion in additional loans to meet the last IMF condition.

Pakistan’s financial condition has been deteriorating, with a whopping Rs276 billion shortfall in tax collection during the first nine months of the fiscal year. The finance ministry had also lined up meetings with the representatives of the foreign commercial banks aimed at convincing them to provide commercial loans to meet the external financing requirements.

Overall, the cancellation of the finance minister’s trip is a significant setback for Pakistan, which is currently in dire need of financial assistance to revive its economy. The cancellation could delay the revival of the stalled bailout package and put additional pressure on Pakistan’s already struggling economy.

Pakistan Raises National Saving Rates

0

The Government of Pakistan has announced a revision in the profit rates of national savings schemes, increasing them by up to 4.13%. The move aims to make the schemes more attractive and mobilize investments from the general public. The Central Directorate of National Savings (CDNS) has increased the rate of return on several savings schemes, including Special Savings Certificates, Savings Accounts, Short Term Savings Certificates, Bahbood Savings Certificates, Pensioners Benefit Account, Defense Saving Certificates, and Regular Income Certificates.

The revision in rates comes in response to the increasing trend of investors withdrawing from the saving schemes due to the government’s failure to increase the returns in line with other investment instruments. The State Bank of Pakistan reported a disinvestment of Rs. 32.38 billion ($190 million) from saving schemes alone in February 2023, with a total disinvestment of Rs. 285.73 billion ($1.7 billion) in the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2023.

The outflow of investments is attributed to the investors’ premature withdrawal from the schemes and investing in more lucrative instruments like fixed deposits at banks. The outstanding investment in saving schemes (net of prize bonds) reduced to Rs. 2.92 trillion ($17 billion) in February 2023, compared to Rs. 3.48 trillion ($20 billion) in the same month last year, showing a drop of 16% in one year.

The revision in the profit rates aims to address the issue of disinvestment and attract investors to national savings schemes. CDNS reinvests the funds collected from individuals into three to 10-year Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs) and distributes profits among its investors from the profits earned on PIBs. The weighted average RoR on national saving schemes should be 95% of the return on PIBs, as per relevant law.

This is the third consecutive year in which investors have withdrawn capital from saving schemes. In 2020, the government banned corporate investors from investing in CDNS saving schemes, as they can invest directly in government debt securities such as T-bills and PIBs.

The revised profit rates of national savings schemes are expected to increase their attractiveness among the public and lead to an increase in investments. The move is also expected to bring stability to the savings schemes’ portfolio, ensuring a stable return for investors.

President returns bill

0

President Arif Alvi has returned a bill to the parliament that aimed to limit the powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, and give the right to appeal in all suo motu cases with retrospective effect. The President returned the bill, citing it as “beyond the competence of the parliament” and therefore liable to be challenged as a “specious enactment.” The proposed legislation aimed to deprive the office of the Chief Justice of Pakistan of powers to take suo motu notices in an individual capacity.
The bill was approved by the federal cabinet on March 28, and later passed by the National Assembly as well as the Senate. The President said the need for consideration of various aspects of the bill was required after “vetting.” The President stressed that the proposed bill was beyond the jurisdiction of the legislative body and that any attempt to modify or tamper with the Supreme Court Rules 1980 could compromise the autonomy and independence of the court.

NPR suspends Twitter account following “state-affiliated media” label

US radio station NPR has suspended its Twitter account after the social media platform labelled the broadcaster as “state-affiliated media”. Twitter’s policy of de-amplifying tweets from state-owned media outlets, such as those from China and Russia, has led to NPR being classified in the same way as these organisations. While NPR’s music and politics handles remain active, the main account with over 8.8 million followers has remained silent since Friday. Twitter’s actions have been met with criticism, with NPR’s CEO John Lansing describing them as “unacceptable”. Musk’s involvement in the issue has also raised eyebrows, as he previously expressed a dislike for the news media and even installed an automatic response of a poop emoji for emails sent to the site’s main press address.

According to NPR’s website, less than 1% of its operational budget comes from federal sources. Instead, the bulk of its revenue comes from fees paid by member stations across the US, supported by individual donors and government funds. The designation of NPR as state-affiliated media by Twitter is therefore being questioned by Elon Musk. He suggested in an email to NPR that the relabeling might not be “accurate”, and that Twitter would investigate further.

The media landscape is facing increasing scrutiny as governments and social media companies alike attempt to grapple with issues such as misinformation, propaganda and foreign interference. Twitter’s policy on state-affiliated media is designed to prevent these organisations from being able to spread their messages widely, while giving users more information about the sources of their news. However, NPR’s case raises questions about whether this policy is appropriate for organisations that receive minimal funding from the government.

As social media companies continue to develop and refine their policies towards media outlets, it is likely that there will be further debate about what constitutes “state-affiliated media”. The issue is a complex one, as different countries have different levels of government involvement in their media industries. For NPR, the designation by Twitter has raised concerns about the broadcaster’s independence and neutrality. However, the fact that the main account has been suspended suggests that NPR is taking the issue seriously and is willing to stand up for its principles.

US and Allies Successfully Communicate with China on Russia Sanctions

0

The United States and its allies have been successful in communicating with China about not providing material support to Russia, according to a senior US Treasury Department official. Though China and Russia have shown signs of partnership, the US has not seen Beijing provide significant material support to Russia, the official added. As a result, Russia is still relying on support from North Korea and Iran.

The US and its allies imposed sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine over a year ago, and have continued to increase pressure. The US has also been cracking down on sanctions evasion. While US officials have had limited travel to China, European counterparts have been communicating actively and visiting.

US-China relations have been at a low point since Washington normalized ties with Beijing in 1979 and switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei. The US previously expressed concern that China was considering providing lethal support to Russia. The US is now warning countries that it will take action against companies and individuals providing material support to Russia for its war effort in Ukraine.

Top US economic officials will be traveling to various countries this month to speak with businesses about the risks of providing material support to Russia. Brian Nelson, the Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, will be traveling to Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Germany. Elizabeth Rosenberg, the assistant secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, will be traveling to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

At the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank next week, the US will provide select opportunities for counterparts and businesses to meet with top US intelligence officials to obtain information on how Russia is using its GRU military intelligence agency and Federal Security Service (FSB) to try and evade sanctions and export controls.

The US would like to see the United Arab Emirates (UAE) do more in terms of sanctions compliance, as the US has previously criticized the UAE for poor compliance. The US has also been working with its allies in Europe to pressure Russia, including through sanctions on individuals and entities, and has been providing military support to Ukraine.

The US and its allies have been successful in communicating with China about not providing significant material support to Russia, and are warning countries against such support. US officials will be traveling internationally to speak with businesses about the risks of providing material support to Russia, and the US is working with its allies to pressure Russia through sanctions and military support to Ukraine.

Pakistan’s judiciary in crisis

0

The Pakistani government’s decision to reject the Supreme Court’s ruling on the delay of provincial assembly elections in Punjab has sparked concerns over the country’s democracy and its ability to attract foreign investment. The government’s demand that Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial step down has also raised questions about the independence of the judiciary.

Former prime minister and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has warned that the government’s disregard for court orders could undermine investor confidence in the country’s judicial system. Khan’s comments came after the government rejected the Supreme Court’s ruling that the elections should be held between April 30 and May 15, instead of the government-backed date of October 8.

Khan has been pushing for early assembly elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces as part of his campaign to force an early general election. However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has rejected Khan’s call and backed the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to delay the polls due to a lack of resources and an ongoing economic crisis.

The PTI chief has also claimed that the sedition cases filed against him and the imprisonment of senior party leader Ali Amin Gandapur are part of a “London Plan” to crush his party before the elections. The government’s refusal to accept the Supreme Court’s decision has raised concerns about the state of Pakistan’s democracy and its relations with foreign investors.

Investors need confidence in a country’s judicial system to have security in contracts, and the government’s rejection of the court’s ruling sends a troubling message. It has also sparked fears that the government is eroding the independence of the judiciary and undermining Pakistan’s democracy.

The situation remains unresolved, and it is unclear how it will impact Pakistan’s economy and its relations with foreign investors. It is essential that the government upholds the rule of law and respects the independence of the judiciary to avoid further damage to Pakistan’s democracy and its economy.

China Sends Warships and Aircraft Near Taiwan After Meeting Between Taiwanese President and US House Speaker

0

China’s recent military movements near Taiwan have caused concern for the self-ruled island nation. For the second day in a row, Chinese warships and aircraft have entered Taiwan’s surrounding waters and air defense identification zone (ADIZ), after President Tsai Ing-wen met with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.

In response to China’s display of force, Tsai assured reporters that her government is committed to protecting the “free and democratic way of life” of the Taiwanese people, while also maintaining peace and stability between the two sides.

Beijing has warned against the meeting and issued strong rebukes, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stating that China will “firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Taiwan has been on alert since last August, when China deployed warships, missiles, and fighter jets into the waters and skies around the island, following a visit by McCarthy’s predecessor Nancy Pelosi. While China’s current response to the Tsai-McCarthy meeting has been less severe, Taiwan’s Premier Chen Chien-jen has stated that defense and security agencies are closely monitoring developments.

The United States has called on China to “cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful diplomacy.” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel also stressed the importance of maintaining open channels of communication to prevent miscalculations.

McCarthy, who is second in line for the US presidency, had originally planned to visit Taiwan himself but instead opted to meet with Tsai in California. The decision was seen as a compromise that would show support for Taiwan while avoiding further tensions with China.

As China continues to flex its military muscle near Taiwan, the island nation remains vigilant and reliant on its allies for support. The situation underscores the ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan, and the delicate balance that must be maintained to prevent a potential conflict.

Study Shows Link Between Sleep Problems and Higher Risk of Stroke

0

According to a recent study published in the medical journal Neurology, there is a link between sleep problems and a higher risk of stroke. The study, which involved 4,496 participants, found that individuals who experienced sleep difficulties, such as poor quality sleep, snoring, snorting, and sleep apnea, were more likely to have a stroke.

The study participants were divided into two groups: those who had suffered a stroke and those who had not. They were then asked about their sleep habits, including the amount of sleep they got, the quality of their sleep, and whether they experienced any of the aforementioned sleep problems.

The results of the study showed that people who had sleep issues, including getting too much or too little sleep, taking long naps, snoring, snorting, and sleep apnea, were more likely to have a stroke. Moreover, the risk of stroke was higher for individuals who had five or more of these symptoms. However, it should be noted that the study only found an association between sleep concerns and stroke, and not a causal relationship.

The researchers highlighted the importance of addressing sleep problems to prevent strokes and called for further research into sleep-related interventions. They suggested that doctors should initiate conversations with people who are having sleep problems earlier, and that interventions to improve sleep could also reduce the risk of stroke.

Despite some limitations of the study, such as people reporting their own symptoms of sleep difficulties, which may not have been entirely accurate, the results suggest that sleep problems should be a focus for stroke prevention. Addressing sleep problems could be a useful strategy to reduce the risk of stroke.

The study emphasizes the need to address sleep problems to prevent strokes. This research highlights that people experiencing sleep difficulties should consult a medical professional for early intervention, which can reduce the risk of stroke. It also sheds light on the importance of improving sleep quality, especially for individuals who are at risk of stroke. Sleep is a vital aspect of our overall health and wellbeing, and addressing sleep problems can significantly reduce the risk of health problems, such as stroke.

Eid-ul-Fitr in Pakistan likely to be celebrated on April 22, says Ruet-i-Hilal Research Council

0

The Ruet-i-Hilal Research Council (RHRC) in Pakistan has announced that Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be celebrated across the country on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The council’s Secretary-General, Khalid Ijaz Mufti, informed that the committee’s meeting is set to convene on Thursday, April 20, to sight the Shawwal moon.

If the crescent is sighted on Thursday evening, then Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Saturday, April 22, after completing 30 fasts of the holy month of Ramazan. However, he added that it was unlikely that the moon will be sighted the same evening.

According to the council, the birth of the moon is expected to occur on Thursday, April 20, at 9:13 am Pakistan time. On the evening of the 29th of Ramazan, the moon’s age at sunset should be more than 19 hours for sighting. However, in all areas of Pakistan, it will be less than 10 hours, making it impossible to sight the moon.

The difference between sunset and moonset, which should be more than 40 minutes, will only be 21 minutes in Peshawar, Gilgit, Muzaffarabad, Charsadda, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Quetta, and Jiwani, and 20 minutes in Lahore and Karachi.

Even if weather conditions throughout Pakistan are clear, there is no possibility of sighting the moon, even with a telescope, on the evening of April 20. The 30th of Ramazan will be observed on April 21, and the 1st of Shawwal will be celebrated on April 22.

Mufti said that any reports of crescent sighting from any province, city, or area of Pakistan on the evening of April 20 would be false. On the evening of April 21, the moon’s age at sunset will be more than 33 hours in all areas of Pakistan. Additionally, the difference between sunset and moonset will be 80 minutes, which is considerable.

As a result, the crescent will appear thick and late on the night of the 30th fast, leading some people to believe it is not the first but a two-day-old crescent. However, from both a Sharia and scientific perspective, it will be considered the first crescent.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramazan, during which Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. The festival is typically celebrated with prayers, family gatherings, and feasting. The exact date of Eid-ul-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal.

Based on the prediction of the Ruet-i-Hilal Research Council, Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be celebrated on April 22 in Pakistan. However, if the moon is sighted on Thursday evening, it will be celebrated on April 21. Muslims in Pakistan eagerly await the announcement of the sighting of the Shawwal moon, which signals the end of the holy month of Ramazan and the beginning of the festive season.

Pakistan’s Economy Faces Challenges as US Dollar Gains Against the Rupee

0

The US Dollar continued its upward trend against the Pakistani Rupee on Friday, gaining a record 25 paisas in the interbank trading. The local currency had appreciated by 1.21 percent on Thursday, halting the US Dollar’s advance. However, it bounced back the next day after Saudi Arabia pledged $2 billion in funding to Pakistan. The new price of the US Dollar against Pakistani Rupee is Rs284.42 after losing Rs3.43.

The appreciation of the Pakistani Rupee on Thursday was largely attributed to hopes that the country was moving towards securing a Staff Level Agreement (SLA) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, the IMF sought written guarantees from friendly countries of Pakistan before securing any SLA with the Finance Ministry of Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar expressed optimism that the country would soon sign the much-needed IMF agreement. The agreement would provide Pakistan with a financial lifeline and help stabilize the economy.

Pakistan’s foreign reserves have dipped to US$9.7 billion, highlighting the country’s dire economic situation. The government has been struggling to revive the economy, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The rise in the US Dollar’s value against the Pakistani Rupee will make imports more expensive and further burden the economy.

The recent Saudi pledge is a much-needed boost to the country’s foreign reserves. Pakistan has also received aid from China and the United Arab Emirates in recent years. However, experts have warned that relying on aid is not a sustainable solution to the country’s economic problems.

To address its economic challenges, Pakistan needs to focus on increasing exports, attracting foreign investment, and improving tax collection. The country has immense potential in sectors such as textiles, agriculture, and IT, which can be leveraged to boost exports.

Furthermore, Pakistan needs to improve its business climate by addressing issues such as corruption, bureaucratic red tape, and security concerns. Investors need to feel confident about investing in the country for sustained economic growth to occur.

In conclusion, the appreciation of the US Dollar against the Pakistani Rupee highlights the challenges faced by the country’s economy. While aid from friendly countries provides temporary relief, long-term solutions are needed to stabilize the economy. Pakistan needs to focus on increasing exports, attracting foreign investment, and improving the business climate to achieve sustained economic growth.

Explosion at Diamer Bhasha Dam Site: Three Dead and Seven Injured

0

An explosion during rock blasting at the under-construction Diamer Bhasha dam in Gilgit Baltistan resulted in the death of at least three people and injuries to seven others. The incident took place while labourers were installing explosives required for the dam’s construction. The blast occurred in camp no. 6, where explosives were being installed to break rocks.

The Diamer Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muhammad Ayaz said that an investigation would be conducted into the incident, and the relevant station house officer was looking into it. He also confirmed that none of the Chinese engineers working at the site were harmed in the blast.

The count of casualties varied initially. Diamer Rescue 1122 District Coordinator Shaukat Riaz and the dam project’s spokesperson Pyar Ali reported three deaths and 10 injuries, while a statement from the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) provided the same count. However, the SSP confirmed that initially, ten labourers were injured, of whom three later died.

Wapda Chairman retired Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani announced monetary compensation for the injured and families of the deceased. Families of the deceased would receive Rs500,000 each, those seriously injured would receive Rs500,000, and those with minor injuries would receive Rs200,000. Additionally, the project contractor would provide financial support to the deceased and injured, according to its policy.

The Diamer Bhasha Dam is one of the largest dams under construction in Pakistan, located on the Indus River in Gilgit Baltistan. The project is expected to provide more than 4,000 MW of electricity and help with flood control, water storage, and irrigation. The construction of the dam has been ongoing for over a decade, with work on the main dam and related infrastructure estimated to be completed by 2028.

This incident highlights the risks involved in large-scale construction projects and the need for safety measures to be in place. The government and contractors involved must ensure that safety protocols are strictly adhered to in the future to prevent such accidents from happening again. The families of the deceased and injured must also be adequately compensated for their loss and suffering.

Kareena Kapoor, who has been hosting the chat show What Women Want for four seasons, recently responded to a fan’s question about why she only invites friends and family to the show. In a YouTube clip shared by Mirchi Plus, the fan asked if Kareena’s lack of celebrity guests was due to a lack of interest on their part or if she simply preferred to have her loved ones on the show.

Kareena responded by saying that her audience is extremely interested in her family and friends, and that they want to see them interact and hear their views on various topics. She added that people are curious about what their conversations are like, and that’s why she invites her loved ones to the show.

Another fan asked Kareena about her “weird” Hindi, to which she replied that it was because in films, actors have time to memorize their dialogues, but on her show, the director hardly gives her any time, or perhaps she doesn’t give herself enough time.

It’s no secret that audiences are interested in celebrity lives and their interactions with each other. Overall, Kareena’s responses to her fans’ questions are a reminder that celebrities are people too. They have their quirks and insecurities, just like everyone else. And while it’s easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry, it’s important to remember that at the end of the day, these are just regular people doing a job they love.

During a recent Facebook Q&A session, Afridi confirmed that Sialkot and Faisalabad are in the running to become the new teams in the upcoming season.

While there has been no official confirmation from the PSL management about the addition of new teams, this news has sparked excitement among cricket fans in Pakistan. The possibility of adding new teams has been discussed in the past, with PCB’s management committee chairman, Najam Sethi, stating that the number of teams in the PSL could be increased to ten due to high demand.

However, the decision to add new teams ultimately lies with the franchises. According to Sethi, the PCB has to convince the franchises to include two more teams, and if a franchise suffers a loss, the PCB will take responsibility. Despite the potential risks, Sethi believes that adding two more teams will be more successful as many people are showing interest in being part of it.

The addition of Sialkot and Faisalabad as potential new teams has already generated a buzz among cricket fans in Pakistan. Sialkot is known for producing some of the best cricketing equipment in the world, and has a rich history in cricket. The PSL has been a massive success since its inception in 2016. It has not only provided a platform for Pakistani cricketers to showcase their talent but also attracted top international players to play in Pakistan. Camilla’s Fear of Queenship

Royal experts are expressing concern over Queen Camilla‘s alleged fear of becoming Queen and sitting on the throne with King Charles. Ingrid Seward, the Editor-in-Chief of Majesty Magazine, recently discussed these claims in an interview with Dan Wootton for GB News.

According to Seward, the desire for Camilla to become Queen is being driven by Prince Charles, who reportedly wants his wife to sit beside him during his coronation and be anointed as Queen. However, Seward also believes that Camilla would prefer a more low-key role and is likely feeling petrified about her impending position as Queen.

It is not uncommon for members of the royal family to feel trepidation about the responsibilities that come with their roles. In Camilla’s case, her fear may be compounded by the fact that she is stepping into a role that was once held by the beloved Queen Elizabeth II. However, it is important to note that Camilla has been performing her duties as the Duchess of Cornwall admirably for many years and has gained a significant amount of public support.

As a member of the royal family, Camilla has been involved in numerous charitable endeavors and has demonstrated a deep commitment to the well-being of others. She has also taken on a number of official duties on behalf of the monarchy and has shown herself to be a capable and dedicated representative of the royal family.

Despite these achievements, it is understandable that Camilla may feel apprehensive about becoming Queen. The role comes with a great deal of responsibility and public scrutiny, and it is not uncommon for members of the royal family to experience pressure and stress as a result.

In the coming months and years, Camilla will undoubtedly face numerous challenges as she assumes her new role. However, it is important to remember that she is a capable and accomplished individual who has the support of her husband and the rest of the royal family. With time and experience, she will likely grow more comfortable in her role and continue to make significant contributions to the monarchy and the wider community.
