Pakistan to launch anti-terrorism operation

0

Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) has agreed to launch an “all-out comprehensive operation” to eliminate terrorism in the country. The decision was made during the 41st meeting of the NSC, which was presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by senior civil and military leaders. The meeting, which was held at the Prime Minister’s House, lasted for two hours before resuming later in the evening.

The NSC meeting was held in continuation of a previous meeting that took place on January 2, which was called in response to an attack on the Karachi Police Office on February 17. The committee has formed a high-level committee to provide recommendations on the implementation and limitations of the operation within two weeks.

The operation will incorporate measures at the political, diplomatic, security, economic, and social levels to rid the country of terrorism in all its forms. The participants of the meeting emphasized the need for “comprehensive national security,” with the relief of the people being central to the operation.

Earlier in the day, PTI leader Shireen Mazari commented that the NSC meeting would be crucial in shaping the future course of action regarding the country’s security. She expressed concerns that the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s fear of elections might lead to the state turning against the nation. She also stated her hopes that the government would uphold the Constitution and the rule of law.

According to Dawn, the government may ask the top brass for a briefing on potential threats from militants in case elections are held in Punjab on May 14. Last month, the Pakistan Army informed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that its troops would not be available for poll-related duties due to the prevalent security situation within the country and on the borders.

The military authorities gave a detailed briefing to the government that terrorist outfits have regrouped in tribal districts bordering Afghanistan, making electioneering conditions unsuitable. The option of imposing an emergency in the country under Article 232 of the Constitution for a maximum period of one year may also be discussed in the meeting.

The NSC has reiterated its resolve to have “zero tolerance” for terrorism in the country. The operation against terrorism will require the cooperation and involvement of the entire nation and the government, with measures taken at every level to ensure the safety and security of the people. The high-level committee formed will provide recommendations to ensure the operation is implemented effectively and efficiently.

Saudi Arabia funds Pakistan’s Dam

0

Saudi Arabia has signed a $240 million loan agreement with Pakistan to support the Mohmand Dam project in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The agreement was signed in Islamabad by officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan, Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki. The loan will provide significant support to Pakistan’s energy security while also improving food and water security and boosting socioeconomic development in the province.

The Mohmand Dam project is located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and suffered damage during a devastating flood last year that inundated a third of the country. The flood caused a colossal loss of roughly $30 billion to the country’s economy, which has already been struggling due to the global coronavirus pandemic. The agreement to support the dam’s reconstruction and rehabilitation is a significant step in Pakistan’s economic recovery.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the dam site in August last year and stated that the dam will generate 800 megawatts of electricity while also providing water for irrigation and helping to save the area from flooding. The loan from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) will go towards rebuilding the dam and increasing its capacity to generate clean and renewable energy, improving the lives of the people living in the surrounding areas.

Pakistan has been working to increase its energy capacity and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. The country has significant renewable energy potential, particularly in solar and wind energy, and has set an ambitious target of generating 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The Mohmand Dam project will be a significant step towards achieving this goal, as well as improving food and water security and boosting socioeconomic development in the region.

The loan from the SFD is a testament to the strong relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and the commitment of the Saudi government to supporting development projects in Pakistan. The two countries have a long history of cooperation, and the loan for the Mohmand Dam project is just one example of the ongoing partnership between them.

The loan agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan for the Mohmand Dam project is a significant step towards improving energy, food, and water security in Pakistan while also boosting socioeconomic development in the province. The project will also contribute to Pakistan’s ambitious renewable energy targets and help the country reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. The loan is a testament to the strong relationship between the two countries and their ongoing commitment to cooperation and development.

Justice Minallah’s Detailed Note on Suo Motu Notice Proceedings for Provincial Elections in Pakistan

0

Justice Athar Minallah of the Supreme Court has released his detailed note on the suo motu notice proceedings on the delay in holding polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, revealing that the case was dismissed 4-3. The Chief Justice of Pakistan had taken suo motu notice of the polls in February, citing a “lack of clarity” on the matter.

Justice Minallah agreed with Justices Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Jamal Khan Mandokhail, who penned the dissenting note in the case, stating that the court must always “show extreme restraint in matters which involve political stakeholders.” He also questioned the move to dissolve provincial assemblies and asked if such conduct is in “consonance with the scheme of constitutional democracy.”

The government has called on Justice Bandial to resign, accusing him of becoming “controversial.” Justice Bandial had constituted a nine-member bench to hear the case, but later split it into a five-member bench.

The court’s written order, which was dictated in open court on February 23, raised objections from Justice Mandokhail to the initiation of the proceedings under Article 184(3). The Feb 27 order of the bench, signed by nine judges, referred the matter back to the top judge, keeping in view the previous order, additional notes, and discussions made in the anteroom of the apex court.

The case highlights the political and legal complexities of holding provincial elections in Pakistan. It also underscores the importance of judicial restraint and the need to ensure that the judiciary remains independent and impartial in matters that involve political stakeholders.

Ultimately, it is up to the people of Pakistan to decide who they want to represent them in the provincial assemblies. The role of the judiciary is to ensure that the election process is free and fair and that the constitutional rights of all citizens are protected. By showing restraint and impartiality, the judiciary can help to build public trust in the democratic process and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.

International Team of Veterinarians Save Sick Elephant in Pakistan

  • Veterinarians and animal welfare experts from around the world came together on Wednesday to save the life of an elephant in Pakistan. Noor Jehan, a 17-year-old elephant at a zoo in Karachi, had been suffering from a number of health issues, including arthritis, which left her struggling to stand and move around. Videos of her distressing condition had caused alarm in the country.

An eight-member team from the Austrian animal welfare organization Four Paws took on the complex procedure to help Noor Jehan. The team included veterinarians from Egypt, Bulgaria, and an elephant husbandry expert from Germany. They used a crane and a fire truck to carefully lift the elephant and perform an ultrasound, which revealed a large hematoma in her abdomen. This condition was affecting her organs and required immediate attention.

The team worked tirelessly to give Noor Jehan the care she needed, but the procedure was not without its challenges. The elephant almost lost her life during the sedation phase, but the team’s quick thinking and preparations ensured she survived.

Dr Amir Khalil, who led the team, expressed optimism about Noor Jehan’s future. “The good news is that there is treatment for this, but it requires a lot of work and some luck in the coming days,” he said. “However, Noor Jehan is still young, and she deserves to live another 20 or 30 years.”

Noor Jehan was brought to Karachi more than a dozen years ago with three other elephants. The recent videos of her struggling to stand and move around had sparked a public outcry, and this intervention has brought hope to many animal welfare advocates in Pakistan.

The governor of Sindh province, where Karachi is located, was at the zoo for the procedure and praised the efforts of the team. “We are grateful to the team from Four Paws for their dedicated efforts to save Noor Jehan’s life,” he said. “This is a reminder of the importance of animal welfare, and we must do more to ensure that all animals are treated with care and respect.”

This successful intervention is a testament to the importance of international cooperation in animal welfare, and it sends a message of hope to all those working to improve the lives of animals around the world.

Scientists develop intensity scale for atmospheric rivers to aid disaster preparedness

0

Atmospheric rivers are becoming more frequent and intense due to warmer temperatures and faster evaporation from the world’s oceans, resulting in devastating floods and landslides in California and Pakistan. To help forecasters rank the severity of these events, scientists have devised an intensity scale for atmospheric rivers that runs from AR-1 to AR-5, with AR-5 being the most intense. The scale enables meteorologists to compare atmospheric river events around the world and map out the most probable locations to help people better prepare.

The storms that hit California this winter reached AR-4, while the atmospheric river responsible for Pakistan’s devastating floods in 2022 was AR-5. Strong El Niño years are more likely to have intense atmospheric rivers, and current forecasts indicate an El Niño is likely to develop by the end of this year.

U.S. Government Acknowledges Delayed Evacuation of Kabul, Adopts New Policy for Future Evacuations

0

The U.S. government has officially admitted that it should have started the evacuation of Americans and Afghans from Kabul earlier during the end of the war in Afghanistan in 2021. This acknowledgment was made public in a long-awaited summary of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in August of the same year. The summary outlines the changes in policy that have been made to ensure that evacuations can be carried out more efficiently in foreign countries in the future, especially when security conditions deteriorate.

The decision to withdraw troops led to the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and military, which was followed by desperate attempts to evacuate people from Kabul’s international airport. Unfortunately, an Islamic State suicide bomber carried out an attack that killed over 170 civilians and 13 U.S. service members. This attack, coupled with the government’s delayed evacuation, has attracted widespread criticism from the American public.

Initially, President Biden defended his decision, calling it a success, and announcing the end of an era where America used military power to reshape other countries. However, less than 40 percent of Americans supported how he handled the withdrawal, and President Biden was compelled to call for a review of the pullout from the top down.

The review blames former President Donald J. Trump for hastily making a deal with the Taliban to withdraw American troops by spring 2021 without outlining a plan. Government officials acknowledged the Taliban’s swift takeover of the country and adopted a new stance of “aggressive communication” about risks, recognising the need to err on the side of caution.

In conclusion, the delayed evacuation from Kabul and the suicide bombing that ensued led to the loss of many lives, and the U.S. government has taken full responsibility for the delay. It has also recognised the need to be more proactive in future evacuations and adopt a more cautious approach.

Pakistani Rupee Rises on Hopes of IMF Bailout Revival

0

The Pakistani rupee has gained over 1% against the US dollar in interbank trade on hopes of a revival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout. The IMF has received confirmation from Saudi Arabia on $2bn in additional deposits, raising hopes of an early signing of the agreement. Islamabad has been negotiating with the IMF since January for the release of $1.1bn from a $6.5bn bailout package agreed in 2019. To unlock the funding, Pakistan has cut back on subsidies, raised fuel prices, and added taxes. However, assurances from friendly nations for additional funds have delayed the agreement. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar is due to visit the UAE on his way to the US to hold talks on the release of funds.

Analysts have said the rupee’s recovery is a positive development and see the local currency as resilient in the days to come if inflows are ensured. However, the foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) stand at a critical level of $4.2bn, which is barely enough to cover one month’s imports.

Meanwhile, the US dollar has slightly gained worldwide but remains near a two-month low as traders weigh how the upcoming US jobs data will impact Federal Reserve policy. The soft economic data has added to fears of a recession in the world’s largest economy, leading traders to seek safe-haven assets.

Whats App Beta Testing Bio-metric Vault for Private Chats

Whats App is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to lock their private chats with bio metric data or a pass-code, according to leaked screenshots shared on WABetaInfo. This feature is currently available in Whats App version 2.23.8.2, which is undergoing beta testing on Android. It is not yet clear when this feature will be rolled out to the public, but its existence indicates that it will be made available on the App Store version soon.

To use the feature, users will first be able to add a chat to a list of locked chats, which will then require them to enter their pass code or bio-metric data, such as a fingerprint, to access the messages inside it. If someone tries to open a locked chat without the necessary authentication, they will be given the option of having all the messages in it deleted to gain access. Any media sent within a locked chat will also not be automatically saved to the phone’s gallery, adding an extra layer of privacy.

This privacy-focused addition comes amid reports that the UK government may soon outlaw end-to-end encryption, which scrambles the content of messages to protect them from hackers, through the Online Safety Bill. This legislation could require tech companies to scan the contents of messages sent through their social platforms for illegal content. However, doing so would likely force them to weaken or do away with their own security measures.

Whats App’s head, Will Cathartic, has previously stated that he would rather the app be banned in the UK than remove end-to-end encryption. Cathartic argues that undermining the privacy of Whats App messages in the UK would do so for all its users worldwide, and that “there isn’t a way to change it in just one part of the world.”

The addition of the locked chats feature is a move towards giving users more control over their privacy and security on the app. As messaging apps become more prevalent in our daily lives, it is crucial that they offer features to protect users’ sensitive information.

National Assembly of Pakistan passes resolution rejecting Supreme Court verdict on Punjab elections

0

The National Assembly of Pakistan passed a resolution on Thursday, rejecting the minority verdict of the Supreme Court on the Punjab elections and binding Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his cabinet not to implement the decision. The resolution was moved by Balochistan Awami Party lawmaker Khalid Magsi and approved by a majority of the lawmakers. It noted that the National Assembly had previously called on the Supreme Court to avoid “interfering” in political matters. The resolution expressed concerns over the Supreme Court’s circular setting aside the verdict of a three-member bench on suo motu cases and the formation of a controversial bench. It also demanded the formation of a full court to review the “wrong interpretation” of Article 63-A.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Mohsin Leghari opposed the resolution, warning that the House was treading on a dangerous path and committing contempt of court. He defended the Supreme Court’s decision on the Punjab elections, saying that the apex court had announced for elections to be held within 90 days since that was instructed by the Constitution. Leghari further took issue with the fact that the PTI was not given an opportunity to speak and present its case before carrying out a vote.

Federal Minister for Communication and Postal Services Asad Mahmood also spoke on the matter, condemning the alleged atrocities faced by worshipers in Al-Aqsa Mosque and arguing that the court was not paying heed to the “political representative” of the country. He asked how the house could be expected to accept the decision of the apex court when its members were not being heard. Mahmood attacked the judiciary for allegedly taking sides and being impartial, arguing that the formation of a full bench would have been better.

The resolution passed by the National Assembly has raised concerns about the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary in Pakistan. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and whether the Supreme Court will take any action in response to the resolution.

China brokers deal to restore ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia, marking a significant breakthrough in Middle East peace efforts

0

The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia met in Beijing, China for the first time in seven years, after China brokered a deal to restore ties between the two regional rivals. The meeting marks a significant milestone in the efforts to end the hostility between the two countries that has fuelled conflicts across the Middle East. In a joint statement, the two countries confirmed that they will launch arrangements to reopen embassies and consulates within the two-month period stipulated in the deal. They also expressed their intention to expand cooperation, including the resumption of flights, bilateral visits of official and private sector delegations, and facilitating visa grants for the citizens of the two countries.

China played a crucial role in the breakthrough, which has disrupted the dynamics in the Middle East, where the United States has been the main mediator for decades. The deal was facilitated by China’s President Xi Jinping, who spoke by phone with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud about several issues in March. The relationship between Iran and Saudi Arabia began to deteriorate in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates intervened in the Yemen war, where the Iran-aligned Houthi movement ousted a Saudi-backed government and took over the capital, Sanaa. The situation escalated in 2016 when Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran after its embassy in Tehran was stormed during a dispute between the two countries over Riyadh’s execution of a Shia cleric.

The deal could lead to improved security for Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom has blamed Iran for arming the Houthis who have carried out missile and drone attacks on its cities and oil facilities. In 2019, Riyadh blamed a massive attack on Aramco oil facilities, which knocked out half of its oil output, directly on the Islamic Republic. Tehran denied those allegations.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers was described as “good and forward-looking” by Iranian state TV. The move is a significant step towards peace and stability in the region, as the two countries have been at odds for many years. The breakthrough facilitated by China has challenged the traditional role of the United States as the main mediator in the region.

UN Condemns Taliban Ban on Afghan Women Working for the United Nations

0

UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutters has criticised the Taliban administration in Afghanistan for its recent ban on Afghan women working for the United Nations. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Gutters described the ban as a violation of women’s fundamental human rights. The UN mission in Afghanistan has advised all Afghan staff not to report to the office for safety reasons. The Taliban, which took over after US-led forces withdrew, claims to respect women’s rights according to its strict interpretation of Islamic law. However, the UN believes the ban is unlawful under international law and cannot be accepted. The Secretary-General’s special representative for Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, has condemned the move and is engaging with the Taliban at the highest levels to reverse the order. The UN is also speaking with member states, donors, and humanitarian agencies to address the issue.

In December, the Taliban stopped most female humanitarian aid employees from working, making it more challenging to reach women in need and potentially leading to donor funding reductions. The recent ban on Afghan women working for the UN exacerbates this situation, further harming women’s access to critical aid.

The Taliban’s restrictions on women’s rights in Afghanistan have been widely condemned, with the UN and other international organisations calling for respect for human rights and gender equality. The UN has repeatedly stated that women’s participation in decision-making is essential for sustainable peace and development.

The ban on Afghan women working for the UN is a severe setback for gender equality and human rights in Afghanistan. It further limits women’s participation in public life and undermines their ability to access critical services. The international community must continue to put pressure on the Taliban to respect women’s rights and ensure that Afghan women can play an active role in shaping their country’s future.

Pakistani Rupee Gains on Saudi Arabian Loan Promise

0

The Pakistani rupee has experienced significant gains against the US dollar, climbing 1.21% in the inter-bank market on Thursday after reports of expected inflows from Saudi Arabia. The currency closed at 284.42, up by Rs3.43. This followed a new record low of 287.85 in the inter-bank market on Wednesday. The Saudi Arabian government has confirmed it will provide a $2 billion loan to Pakistan, a move which is crucial for the debt-ridden South Asian economy.

However, the International Monetary Fund agreement still hinges on a similar commitment from the United Arab Emirates for a $1 billion loan. Globally, the US dollar has slightly gained, but not strayed far from a recent two-month low as traders consider the impact of Federal Reserve policy following US jobs data. Weak economic data has added to fears of an impending recession in the world’s largest economy, putting a lid on risk appetite and sending traders in search of safe-haven assets. The US dollar index was up 0.1% at 101.95. Oil prices fell on Thursday as weak US economic data raised concerns over potential global recession and demand reduction.

In the open market, the Pakistani rupee gained one rupee for both buying and selling against the US dollar, closing at 291.50 and 294.50, respectively. Against the Euro, it gained four rupees for both buying and selling, closing at 314 and 317, respectively. Against the UAE Dir ham, the Pakistani rupee lost 10 paisa for buying and remained unchanged for selling, closing at 79.30 and 80.00, respectively. Against the Saudi Riyal, it gained 90 paisa for both buying and selling, closing at 76.80 and 77.50, respectively.

Gold price drops in Pakistan as rupee gains ground against US dollar

0

The price of gold has dropped in the domestic market of Pakistan after reaching a record high. This decrease in the price of gold is attributed to the increase in the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirmed that it has received a commitment from Saudi Arabia to provide funds to help the cash-strapped country. As a result, the price of per tola gold decreased by Rs2,500 to close at Rs214,500, while the price of 10 grams of 24 carats gold went down by Rs2,142 to settle at Rs183,900, according to the All-Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association’s (APSGJA) data.

In the international market, the price of gold decreased by $4 to close at $2019 per ounce. On the other hand, the prices of silver in the domestic market remained unchanged at Rs 2,450 per tola and Rs 2,100.48 per 10 grams, respectively.

This decrease in the price of gold in the domestic market is a relief for those who were planning to buy gold as an investment or for weddings. The rise in the value of the Pakistani rupee is a positive sign for the country’s economy, which has been facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it is important to note that the price of gold can be affected by various factors, including global economic conditions, political instability, and the demand for the metal in the jewellery industry. Investors should always do their research and consult with financial experts before making any investment decisions.

In conclusion, the price of gold has dropped in the domestic market of Pakistan due to the increase in the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. This is good news for those who were planning to buy gold, but it is important to keep in mind that the price of gold can be influenced by various factors. Therefore, it is essential to conduct proper research and seek advice before making any investment decisions.

ECP expresses concerns over transgression into constitutional domain and weakening of its authority

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule for the Punjab Assembly elections on May 14, after complying with the Supreme Court’s order to hold the polls. However, the ECP expressed concerns over the ‘transgression’ into its constitutional domain and claimed that it had been made a “punching bag” by state institutions. The commission stated that the institutions had tied its hands by granting stays in contempt proceedings.

The revised schedule was issued in a notification citing the Supreme Court’s order, stating that candidates had already filed their nomination papers, and their scrutiny was completed before the ECP delayed the polls until October 8 in March. As per the revised schedule, the process will start from appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers which can be filed by April 10, while the appellate tribunal will decide the appeals by April 17.

Revised lists of candidates for each constituency will be published on April 18, while candidates can withdraw their nominations by April 19. Election symbols will be allotted to the contesting candidates on April 20, and polling for 297 general seats of the provincial assembly will be held on May 14.

Despite the explicit directives of the apex court, the cloud of uncertainty still looms over the polls, as the ruling coalition has expressed its disapproval of the verdict and refused to abide by it. There is no clarity on whether the requisite funds and security personnel for holding the elections will be provided to the ECP or not.

A senior official of the ECP said that the commission’s constitutional mandate to hold free, fair, and transparent elections was under attack, and the writ of the commission had been weakened. The official added that the Elections Act 2017 empowered the commission to try those involved in contempt of the ECP. But the subsequent action of institutions had diluted the commission’s authority.

The official regretted that the commission had been made “a punching bag” by different institutions, adding that a malignant campaign was launched against the commission and its head who also received written threats. Show-cause notices were issued over contemptuous remarks and the use of intemperate language against the ECP, but instead of recognising the constitutional position of the ECP, the courts granted stays against the notices.

The official said those who allegedly committed contempt did not appear before the bench as they were “certain of the support from certain quarters.” Referring to the Damask by-poll in February 2021, the official added that 20 presiding officers disappeared under a plan to manipulate the poll results. The ECP took a historic decision to uphold the transparency of elections and make bureaucracy answerable to the commission.

The official said action was initiated against the culprits, but instead of supporting the commission, other institutions suspended the order and granted stays. This had weakened the constitutional position of the ECP, putting a question mark on the holding of fair and transparent elections.

The ECP’s concerns over the transgression into its constitutional domain and the weakening of its authority are valid. It is essential to uphold the commission’s independence and strengthen its authority to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections. The state institutions should support the ECP’s efforts and refrain from interfering in its constitutional domain. The upcoming Punjab Assembly elections will be a litmus test for the ECP’s ability to conduct transparent polls amid institutional challenges.

Pakistan receives confirmation of $2bn deposit from Saudi Arabia as IMF deal inches closer

0

Pakistan has received confirmation from Saudi Arabia for $2bn in additional deposits, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), renewing hopes of an early agreement. Pakistan has been in negotiations with the IMF since the end of January for the release of $1.1bn from a $6.5bn bailout package agreed upon in 2019. The government has made efforts to unlock the funding by cutting back on subsidies, removing an artificial cap on the exchange rate, raising fuel prices, and adding taxes.

Sources have confirmed that the lender has informed Pakistani authorities of the latest developments and that the Fund staff are largely satisfied with the confirmation. The Saudi authorities are expected to make a public announcement, possibly during an upcoming visit from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Saudi envoy in Pakistan has also hinted recently that his country has always supported Pakistan in critical situations and that good news would be shared soon.

The UAE remains the focus of attention for confirmation on another $1bn deposit. Such confirmation could pave the way for striking the staff-level agreement (SLA) with the IMF. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar is likely to visit the UAE en route to the US, where he is expected to hold talks on the release of funds.

However, there is still a stumbling block in the way of signing the SLA with the IMF. The Ministry of Petroleum, in consultation with the PM Office, has announced an unplanned cross-fuel subsidy for owners of motorcycles and cars up to 800cc, which needs to be scrapped at this stage. The government has not yet withdrawn the proposed cross-fuel subsidy, which cannot be implemented in a half-baked manner.

Such schemes have been considered in the past but could not be implemented properly. The announcement of a half-baked cross-fuel subsidy has provided an excuse to the IMF for delaying the SLA signing, as they were still raising questions for getting more details to ascertain how the scheme was going to be implemented in a transparent manner.

The news of the confirmation of the additional deposits from Saudi Arabia comes as a relief to Pakistan, as it struggles to stabilize its economy. The pandemic has hit Pakistan’s economy hard, with the country experiencing a GDP contraction of 0.4% in FY21. Pakistan is also facing external debt and liabilities of around $115bn. The IMF agreement is critical to unlocking the funding needed to address the country’s economic challenges.

The confirmation of the additional deposits from Saudi Arabia is a positive step forward for Pakistan’s economy. However, the proposed cross-fuel subsidy needs to be scrapped to address concerns raised by the IMF. Pakistan needs to address the challenges faced by its economy to unlock the funding required to stabilize it.

Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet Meets Twice in 24 Hours Ahead of High-Stake SC Verdict

The federal cabinet of Pakistan has been called for an emergency meeting, the second one in less than 24 hours, as the country awaits the announcement of the Supreme Court’s verdict on the closely-watched election delay case. The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is scheduled for 1 pm today at Parliament House and will discuss the overall political situation of the country.

While the official agenda has not been disclosed, sources have indicated that the upcoming verdict of the Supreme Court will be a major focus of the meeting. The high-stake verdict could potentially have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of Pakistan, as it pertains to the delay of elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

This emergency meeting follows a previous one held on Monday night at 8 pm, during which the cabinet made the decision to withdraw the services of SC Registrar Ishrat Ali. This came after a letter by Justice Qazi Faez Isa sought the cabinet to remove Ali from office.

The previous meeting focused on a two-point agenda, with Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan providing a detailed briefing. The first agenda point discussed the issuance of a circular by the registrar against the order of the Supreme Court, while the registrar was asked to report to the Establishment Division.

The second point of discussion was related to the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act 2023, with the cabinet urging President Dr. Arif Alvi to sign it immediately to help resolve the constitutional and political crisis currently faced by the country.

The emergency cabinet meetings underscore the seriousness of the political situation in Pakistan, which has been marked by constitutional crises and political upheaval in recent years. The upcoming verdict of the Supreme Court in the election delay case is likely to have major implications for the future of democracy in the country.

In the face of these challenges, the government and other stakeholders must work together to uphold the rule of law and ensure the democratic process is safeguarded. The cabinet meetings are a clear sign that the government is taking these challenges seriously and is committed to finding a way forward that ensures the best interests of the Pakistani people are served.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Opposes Dictatorship in Judiciary and Urges for a Larger Bench

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the country’s Foreign Minister has expressed his concerns over the constitutional crisis in the country and the possible imposition of dictatorship in the judiciary. Speaking at an event in Larkana, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari highlighted the importance of democracy and urged for a larger bench to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasized that the fight for “Takht-e-Lahore,” a reference to the current political situation in the country, could lead to disastrous consequences. He warned that the constitutional crisis was putting the country on a dangerous path and could lead to a dangerous experiment.

The PPP chief demanded the constitution of a larger bench to end the constitutional crisis, stating that the party was fully prepared for the polls and that Pakistan was ready to accept the larger bench’s decision. He also criticized the one-man show going on in Pakistan’s judiciary and stressed that dictatorship on democracy and judiciary was unacceptable.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari cited the example of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who violated the constitution, and the Supreme Court’s role in legalizing his move and allowing him to amend the constitution. He expressed disappointment that justice was not served to Asif Ali Zardari, who spent 11 years in jail without committing any crime, and no one had sought pardon for the injustice yet.

The PPP leader also criticized former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, who had run the election campaign of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that it was part of the Supreme Court’s history that a chief justice collects dam funds and offers dissolution of cases if someone submits the money to the dam fund.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also stressed the importance of fair and free elections in the country and vowed not to allow anyone to commit vote rigging in the polls.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s remarks on the current constitutional crisis in Pakistan and his demand for a larger bench to resolve the issue are significant. It is essential to uphold democracy and the rule of law in the country and avoid the imposition of dictatorship in any form, including the judiciary. All stakeholders should work towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis and ensure that the upcoming elections are free and fair.

Overall, the article highlights Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s views on the constitutional crisis in Pakistan and his call for a larger bench to resolve the issue. The article also stresses the importance of democracy, the rule of law, and free and fair elections in the country.

Nawaz Sharif Seeks Charges Against SC Justices for ‘Mind-Boggling’ Verdict

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, has called for charges to be brought against three Supreme Court justices following a recent ruling that ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold elections in Punjab on May 14. Sharif, who leads the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), claims that the verdict was politically motivated and designed to bring current Prime Minister Imran Khan back to power.

During a press conference, Sharif accused the judges of having double standards, claiming that elected prime ministers were often ousted by the judiciary, while dictators were able to utilize the “doctrine of necessity”. Sharif also expressed concern that the verdict would cause the rupee to soar to Rs500 against the dollar and inflation to rise to new heights.

The PML-N leader has previously been on the receiving end of verdicts from the same judges, further fueling his allegations of political bias. He urged the public to stand against the “destruction” of the state, calling for a full court to hear the case instead of a minority-ruled bench.

The federal cabinet also rejected the verdict, arguing that it had been issued by a bench with a minority ruling of 3-2, and vowed to raise the matter at different forums.

This latest development highlights the ongoing tensions between Pakistan’s political parties and the judiciary. Sharif’s allegations of bias and political interference echo criticisms from other opposition leaders, who have accused the judiciary of being overly influenced by the government.

The role of the judiciary in Pakistani politics has long been a contentious issue. In recent years, the judiciary has played a prominent role in removing political leaders from power, including Sharif himself, who was disqualified from office in 2017 on corruption charges.

Critics of the judiciary argue that these decisions have been politically motivated, with the judiciary being used as a tool to suppress opposition voices and consolidate power. Supporters, on the other hand, claim that the judiciary is simply upholding the rule of law and holding politicians accountable for their actions.

The truth likely lies somewhere in between. While there may be instances of political interference, the judiciary also plays an important role in ensuring that those in power are held accountable for their actions. However, there is a need for greater transparency and accountability within the judiciary to ensure that its decisions are fair and impartial.

The recent ruling against the PML-N highlights the need for reform in Pakistan’s judiciary to ensure that its decisions are not influenced by political biases. While it remains to be seen what actions will be taken in response to Sharif’s allegations, it is clear that there is a pressing need for greater accountability and transparency within Pakistan’s judiciary.

The ongoing tensions between Pakistan’s political parties and the judiciary continue to be a cause for concern. Sharif’s allegations of bias and political interference, while controversial, highlight the need for greater transparency and accountability within the judiciary. It is important that steps are taken to ensure that the judiciary remains impartial and free from political influence.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s Criticism of Supreme Court Judges Raises Concerns about Judicial Independence in Pakistan

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President, and Chief Organizer have criticized the Supreme Court judges after the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa election verdict. In a tweet, she claimed that the verdict against the delay in Punjab and KP elections is part of a conspiracy to rewrite the constitution.

She further alleged that the bench of the Supreme Court has taken the responsibility of facilitating the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, just like the former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Faiz Hameed did in 2018. Maryam Nawaz Sharif added that the majority of the Supreme Court judges have opposed the facilitation done through a ‘one-man show’.

The PML-N senior vice president claimed that today the Punjab government has been handed over to the PTI chairman Imran Khan on a plate. She urged the parliament to take action and stop the PTI government’s facilitation through legal and constitutional ways.

Earlier, the Supreme Court declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) March 22 order on the Punjab elections null and void. The court declared the ECP’s order postponing the provincial assembly elections until October 8 as “unconstitutional” and ordered the government to release Rs. 21 billion in funds for elections in Punjab by April 10.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s criticism of the Supreme Court judges is not new. In the past, she has accused the judiciary of being biased and supporting the PTI government. Her party, the PML-N, has also criticized the judiciary for targeting its leaders and supporters.

The PML-N’s criticism of the judiciary has raised concerns about the independence of the judiciary in Pakistan. The judiciary’s impartiality is essential for the rule of law and democracy in the country. The judiciary must remain impartial and uphold the constitution and the law, irrespective of the political affiliations of the parties involved.

The PML-N’s allegations of a conspiracy to rewrite the Constitution are also concerning. Any attempt to rewrite the constitution without a proper democratic process would undermine the legitimacy of the constitution and the democratic institutions in Pakistan.

The criticism of the Supreme Court judges by Maryam Nawaz Sharif and the PML-N is a reflection of the political polarization in Pakistan. The judiciary must remain independent and impartial to uphold the rule of law and democracy in the country. The government and opposition parties must respect the judiciary’s decisions and work together to strengthen democratic institutions and processes in Pakistan.

Donald Trump becomes first US President indicted on criminal charges

0

On April 4, 2023, former US President Donald Trump appeared in a Manhattan courtroom to face 34 criminal counts related to hush money paid to a former porn star during his 2016 election campaign. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, including conspiracy and payment intended to buy silence over an alleged affair.

The charges against Trump revolve around $130,000 paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels just days before his election win. His former lawyer and aide Michael Cohen, who turned against him, said he arranged the payment to Daniels in exchange for her silence about a tryst she said she had with Trump in 2006. Legal experts suggest that if not properly accounted for, the payment could result in charges for falsifying business records, possibly for the purpose of covering up a campaign finance violation.

Trump’s legal troubles have already disrupted the 2024 White House campaign, and his response to the charges will undoubtedly continue to shape the political landscape. Despite the severity of the charges, Republicans have largely rallied around Trump, with his rival in the party’s presidential primary, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, calling the indictment un-American. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has been careful not to fuel Trump’s claim of a politically weaponized judicial system, holding back over the indictment of his rival.

Trump claimed that he was the victim of political persecution, while also using the opportunity to energize his support base and raise millions of dollars for his bid to reclaim the White House. Hundreds of people, including Trump supporters and anti-Trump demonstrators, apart from media persons and curious onlookers, gathered outside the venue. Police stepped into the fray as the pro- and anti-Trump people verged on a clash.

Trump is facing a series of separate criminal investigations at the state and federal levels that could result in further, more serious charges between now and Election Day. These include his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state of Georgia, his handling of classified documents, and his possible involvement in the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The indictment of a former US President on criminal charges is a watershed moment for the country’s criminal and political system. It remains to be seen how Trump’s legal troubles will unfold and whether they will affect his chances of reclaiming the White House in 2024. Regardless, this is a significant moment in American history, and its repercussions will be felt for years to come.

The indictment of Donald Trump on criminal charges is a historic moment in US politics. It marks a significant turning point in the country’s criminal and political system and has already disrupted the 2024 White House campaign. Despite the severity of the charges, Republicans have largely rallied around Trump, and his response to the charges will undoubtedly continue to shape the political landscape. The situation remains tense, with Trump’s legal troubles continuing to capture the attention of the nation.

Finland Joins NATO Amid Threats from Russia

0

Finland has officially joined NATO, doubling the length of the border that NATO shares with Russia and strengthening its eastern flank as the war in Ukraine continues without any resolution in sight. The move is a historic policy shift for Finland, which had maintained a policy of military non-alignment for decades. Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto completed the accession process by handing over an official document to US State Secretary Antony Blinken at NATO’s HQ. The flag of Finland was hoisted alongside those of the alliance’s 30 other members as a military band played in bright sunshine.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg declared at the ceremony that “For almost 75 years, this great alliance has shielded our nations and continues to do so today. But war has returned to Europe and Finland has decided to join NATO and be part of the world’s most successful alliance.” Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously cited opposition to NATO’s eastward enlargement as one justification for invading Ukraine.

Finland’s accession to NATO brings significant military capabilities to the alliance. Finland is one of the few European countries to have retained a conscription army through decades of peace, wary of Russia next door. Additionally, Finland’s ground, naval, and air forces are all trained and equipped with one primary aim — to repel any Russian attack.

The Kremlin has reacted negatively to Finland’s accession to NATO, threatening “counter-measures” and warning of the potential for the conflict in Ukraine to escalate further. Moscow has watched successive waves of NATO enlargement to the formerly communist east of Europe with consternation, and the issue was a bone of contention even before the invasion of Ukraine.

Despite Russian opposition, Helsinki residents welcomed Finland’s entry into NATO, saying they feel more secure. However, residents of the Russian city of St Petersburg, which is only 150km from the Finnish border, expressed concern that Finland could be making problems for itself by joining NATO.

Finland and its Nordic neighbor Sweden applied together last year to join NATO, but the Swedish application has been held up by NATO members Turkey and Hungary. Sweden hopes to become a member at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, but Turkey and Hungary have cited grievances over terrorism and democracy, respectively.

Finland’s accession to NATO marks a significant shift in its foreign policy and provides important military capabilities to the alliance. However, it has also drawn threats and warnings from Russia, highlighting the continued tensions between Russia and NATO. The move is likely to have far-reaching consequences for the security of the region and the relationship between Russia and NATO in the coming years.

Prince Harry’s Memoir Sheds Light on Royal Family’s Handling of Media Relations

0

In his new memoir “Spare,” Prince Harry has disclosed a startling conversation with his favorite Palace aide Marko, where he learned that his father, King Charles, supported the notion that his younger son is hooked on drugs. According to Harry, Marko told him that a newspaper editor believed him to be a drug addict and planned to publish the story. Harry suggested Marko tell the editor that she had it wrong, but the editor refused to believe him a moment of hope, Harry turned to Marko and asked if his father could do something to stop the story from being published. But Marko responded that the Palace had opted for a different approach and was “going full Neville Chamberlain,” referring to the former British Prime Minister who infamously appeased Adolf Hitler before World War II.

The revelation is likely to fuel speculation about the tension between Prince Harry and the rest of the royal family, particularly his father. It also sheds light on the difficult relationship between the media and the royals, who have long been the subject of intense scrutiny and speculation.

The news of King Charles’ alleged support for the drug addiction story is especially surprising given that Prince Harry has been open about his struggles with addiction and mental health. In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, he spoke candidly about his decision to seek therapy and how it has helped him cope with the trauma of his mother’s death and the pressures of royal life.

Some have criticized the Palace’s decision to “play ball” with the editor rather than standing up for Prince Harry and setting the record straight. Others have suggested that the royals are simply trying to avoid further negative press and protect their image.

The revelation is sure to generate further interest in Prince Harry’s memoir, which has already caused controversy for its frank discussion of his relationship with his family and his decision to step back from royal duties.

Warner Bros. in Talks with J.K. Rowling for Harry Potter Series Adaptation

Warner Bros. is reportedly in talks with J.K. Rowling for a Harry Potter series adaptation that will be based on her best-selling book series. According to Bloomberg, each season of the series will be inspired by one of the books, and the project is expected to span several years on the streaming platform. While HBO Max declined to comment on the matter, sources close to the situation have revealed that talks between Warner Bros. Discovery and Rowling are still in the initial stages.

Although Rowling will have some creative involvement with the series, she will not serve as the primary creator or showrunner. This news comes as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to evaluate the integration of HBO Max and Discovery+ and showcase its upcoming slate of streaming content at an event on April 12.

Warner Bros. previously adapted each book in Rowling’s Harry Potter series into a blockbuster film, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 and concluding with Harry and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. The eight films generated over $7.7 billion at the global box office and further popularized the Potter brand.

This potential Harry Potter series adaptation is an exciting prospect for fans who have been eagerly waiting for more content from the magical universe. Given the immense popularity of books and films, a TV series that delves deeper into the characters, settings, and magical elements would be a welcome addition.

The prospect of having each season based on a single book could also provide a more comprehensive exploration of the story’s arcs, themes, and character development. The series could allow for the inclusion of subplots and characters that had to be cut from the films due to time constraints.

Furthermore, the inclusion of Rowling’s creative input could ensure that the series stays true to the spirit of the books while also providing new and exciting storylines. Fans can look forward to the possibility of revisiting their favorite characters and experiencing the magic of Hogwarts in a new way.

The potential for a Harry Potter series adaptation is an exciting prospect for fans of the franchise. While the talks between Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling are still in their initial stages, the prospect of a series that delves deeper into the magical universe is a welcome addition. Fans can only hope that the negotiations are successful and that we get to return to Hogwarts soon.

Gold and Silver Prices Surge in Pakistan as Inflation Soars and Rupee Weakens

0

Gold and silver prices in Pakistan have witnessed a significant increase, following global trends and a weakened rupee, on the eve of a monetary policy meeting. The price of gold (24 carats) rose by Rs1,200 per tola and Rs1,028 per 10 grams, settling at Rs209,500 and Rs164,645 respectively, according to data released by All-Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA).

The depreciation of the rupee against the dollar in the interbank market, with a loss of Rs1.25, is seen as a contributing factor to the increase in gold prices. The State Bank of Pakistan is expected to raise the policy rate by 100-200 basis points as inflation continues to spiral out of control. Consumer price inflation in Pakistan reached a record high of 35.37% in March compared to the previous year, with rising consumer prices straining budgets and causing financial difficulties for many households.

Gold is often considered a hedge against inflation, as it tends to increase in value when the purchasing power of the dollar declines. With Pakistan’s monthly inflation exceeding forecasts and reaching nearly an all-time high level of 35.4% from a year earlier, the demand for gold as a safe-haven asset has surged.

The increase in gold prices is also influenced by global factors. World gold prices rebounded as the dollar trimmed its initial gains driven by expectations of OPEC’s surprise output cuts leading to higher global energy prices and potential interest rate hikes by central banks. Spot gold rose by 0.5% to $1,977.43 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures gained 0.4% to $1,994.50. However, gold prices had touched a one-week low of $1,949.54 earlier in the session.

While gold is traditionally considered a safe-haven asset during times of inflation, the potential for interest rate hikes to curb rising price pressures can dampen its appeal since it does not pay any interest. Nevertheless, the surge in gold prices in Pakistan is driven by rising inflation and the weakened rupee, prompting traders to exercise caution.

In addition to gold, silver prices in Pakistan have also reached all-time highs, with an increase of Rs80 per tola and Rs68.59 per 10 grams. Silver prices in the international market fell by 0.3% to $24.01 per ounce, while platinum was down 0.3% to $988.60 and palladium rose by 0.7% to $1,470.72.

In conclusion, the recent surge in gold and silver prices in Pakistan is attributed to various factors, including global trends, a weakened rupee, and soaring inflation. As the State Bank of Pakistan is expected to raise the policy rate to tackle inflation, and with gold traditionally considered a hedge against inflation, the demand for gold and silver as safe-haven assets may continue to rise in the country. However, potential interest rate hikes and other global factors may impact the trend of gold and silver prices in the future, and investors and traders need to closely monitor market dynamics.

Pakistan’s Rupee Hits All-Time Low at 288 Against USD as IMF Loan Program Remains Delayed

Pakistan’s currency, the rupee, has reached a new all-time low against the US dollar, hitting Rs288 in the interbank market. This depreciation comes amid delays in the revival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan program and the looming risk of default on foreign debt repayment. The rupee has been struggling in recent months, with last month seeing a record low of Rs285.09 per US dollar on February 3, 2023.

One of the reasons behind the rupee’s decline is the panic buying of US dollars by importers, as the supply of foreign currency remains low in the interbank market. Market talks suggest that this situation has been exacerbated by the delay in the resumption of the IMF loan program, which has led to choking inflows of foreign financing. Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves have depleted to a critically low level of $4.2 billion, posing a serious threat of default on foreign debt repayment in the near future.

The government has been in talks with the IMF since late January to resume the stalled loan program worth $6.5 billion, and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar is scheduled to visit the United States on April 10-16 to make efforts towards this end. However, the delay in the resumption of the loan program has been attributed to heightened political and economic instability in the country, leading to a lack of aid from the IMF and other friendly countries.

In addition to the IMF loan program, Pakistan is also looking toward Saudi Arabia for a potential bailout package. The government has mentioned that Saudi Arabia has signaled a new bailout package, but the details and timing of the rollout remain uncertain. Pakistan is facing import payment pressure, and the government had fully reopened imports on the recommendation of the IMF, leading to increased demand for US dollars in the market.

The depreciating rupee and low foreign exchange reserves highlight the economic challenges that Pakistan is currently facing. The country needs to address its political and economic instability to restore investor confidence, attract foreign investment, and stabilize its currency. Resuming the IMF loan program and securing support from friendly countries, including Saudi Arabia, could provide some relief, but long-term structural reforms and measures to improve the country’s economic fundamentals are necessary for sustainable economic growth.

Pakistan’s rupee hitting an all-time low against the US dollar at Rs288 is a concerning development for the country’s economy. The delay in the revival of the IMF loan program, panic buying of US dollars by importers, and low foreign exchange reserves are contributing factors to this situation. Pakistan needs to address its economic challenges, restore investor confidence, and implement long-term reforms to stabilize its currency and ensure sustainable economic growth. Immediate measures to secure support from the IMF and friendly countries, along with efforts toward political and economic stability, are crucial to overcoming the current economic crisis. Overall, Pakistan’s economy requires concerted efforts and strategic planning to navigate through these challenging times and pave the way for a stronger and more stable future.

Supreme Court of Pakistan Nullifies ECP’s Decision to Delay Punjab Polls

The three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan declared on Tuesday that the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to postpone the Punjab Assembly elections until October 8, 2023, was “unconstitutional” and “illegal.” The bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justices Munib Akhtar and Ijazul Ahsan, announced that general elections in the province would be held on May 14, 2023.

The PTI had filed a petition challenging the ECP’s decision to delay the polls. During the week-long hearings, two judges of the original five-member bench recused themselves from hearing the case. Afterward, the chief justice constituted a bench comprising himself, Justice Ahsan, and Justice Akhtar to proceed with the petition.

The bench ordered returning officers to accept nomination papers until April 10, 2023, and publish the candidates’ list by April 19, 2023. The ruling further held that free and fair elections must be ensured on the new poll date. The government has been directed by the court to release funds of Rs21 billion for polls by April 10, 2023, and the judge stated that the court would issue appropriate orders should the government fail to comply.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Defence, as per the apex court’s directives, had submitted its report detailing the availability of security personnel for election duties through the Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Awan. After analyzing the report, the Supreme Court announced its verdict and reinstated the previous schedule with amendments.

The SC bench appeared irked by the government declaring “no-confidence” in it during the proceedings. The ruling parties’ lawyers were not allowed to present their arguments before the court reserved the verdict. PML-N lawyer Akram Sheikh stated that he had appeared before the Supreme Court to assist it, adding that he had the utmost respect for the apex court. However, the chief justice observed that while judicial proceedings were made public, consultations among judges were considered internal matters.

Addressing the National Assembly a day earlier, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar warned that the government would not accept if the top court delivered its verdict on a sensitive and important issue in haste. He also asked President Arif Alvi to sign the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023, which aims to curtail the suo motu powers of the office of the chief justice of Pakistan.

The decision is significant, given that it comes just days after the Senate passed a bill that aimed to curtail the powers of the chief justice of Pakistan. The Supreme Court’s verdict reaffirms its role as the guardian of the Constitution and the impartial arbiter of disputes, especially those relating to elections. The ruling also underscores the importance of conducting free and fair elections, which are crucial for the stability and democratic functioning of the country.

Boxer Amir Khan Receives Two-Year Ban for Failed Drug Test: Adverse Analytical Finding for Ostarine

0

Former world champion boxer Amir Khan has been handed a two-year ban after failing a drug test. The 36-year-old athlete tested positive for Ostarine, a prohibited substance, in a urine sample collected by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) after his fight against Kell Brook in February of the previous year. Khan was given a provisional suspension on April 6, 2022, and has accepted the violations, stating that the ingestion of Ostarine was not intentional.

Ostarine is classified as a Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (SARM), a drug designed to have similar effects to testosterone. It is not approved for human consumption in the UK or anywhere else in the world. Dietary supplements containing Ostarine typically claim to promote muscle building. However, its use is strictly prohibited in sports as it is considered a performance-enhancing substance.

Khan, who retired from professional boxing in May of the previous year, has had a successful career, becoming a unified world champion at light welterweight with 34 wins from 40 fights. He rose to prominence after winning his first 18 professional contests and went on to become world champion in 2009 and added the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt in 2011. However, his last fight against Kell Brook in February, which ended in a loss and was stopped in the sixth round, turned out to be his final career fight.

As a result of the ban, Khan will not be eligible to participate in any sport until April 2024, as the ban has been backdated to the time of the provisional suspension. UKAD chief executive Jane Rumble emphasized that athletes are ultimately responsible for what they ingest and the presence of any prohibited substances in their samples, as per the principle of strict liability. She further highlighted the importance of athletes and their support personnel taking their anti-doping responsibilities seriously at all levels of competition, to protect the integrity of clean sport and maintain public confidence.

This case serves as a reminder that anti-doping organizations such as UKAD are committed to diligently pursuing Anti-Doping Rule Violations to maintain the fairness and integrity of sports. Athletes must be vigilant in ensuring that they comply with anti-doping regulations and avoid the use of prohibited substances, as the consequences can be severe, including damaging their careers and undermining public confidence in clean sport.

Amir Khan’s two-year ban for the failed drug test and Adverse Analytical Finding for Ostarine serve as a cautionary tale for athletes at all levels of competition. It highlights the importance of adhering to anti-doping regulations, being aware of the substances they ingest, and understanding the serious consequences of doping in sports. Clean sport is crucial for maintaining the integrity and fairness of competition, and athletes must take their anti-doping responsibilities seriously to protect the reputation of the sport they love. So, it is crucial for all athletes to be vigilant and ensure that they comply with anti-doping regulations to maintain the integrity of sports and protect their careers.

Pakistani Government and Opposition Clash Over Supreme Court Verdict on Punjab Elections

The recent verdict of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on the delay of elections in Punjab has sparked a political confrontation between the government and the opposition parties. While the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) welcomed the decision, the ruling party’s opponents criticized the judgment and accused the court of interference.

The three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s order extending the date of elections beyond the 90 days period unconstitutional and void. The verdict revived and restored the election program for the Punjab Assembly with a few modifications.

However, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, slammed the verdict, saying that the government’s legitimate demands for a full court bench were rejected. He accused the court of showing haste and asked if the verdict was in line with the law and the Constitution. Tarar also criticized the dissolution of two assemblies to satisfy the ego of a person, referring to PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

The opposition parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), rejected the verdict and accused the judiciary of being politicized. Railway Minister Khwaja Saad Rafique said that no political party would stay silent on the injustice, and the PPP senior leader Sherry Rehman alleged that the judiciary was protecting the “ladla” or blue-eyed boy.

The clash between the government and the opposition over the verdict highlights the deepening political polarization in Pakistan. The ruling party and its opponents have been at loggerheads since the 2018 general polls, which the opposition parties claimed were rigged in favor of the PTI. The opposition’s campaign to oust the government through a long march and mass protests failed to gain traction, and the PTI government has remained in power, facing multiple challenges, including an economic crisis, rising inflation, and a deteriorating security situation.

The Supreme Court’s verdict on the Punjab elections has added fuel to the fire, with the opposition accusing the government of using state institutions to further its political agenda. The ruling party, on the other hand, maintains that it wants state institutions to work within their constitutional ambit and ensure free and transparent elections.

The political standoff between the government and the opposition is likely to intensify in the coming days, with the Punjab elections set to take place on May 14. The government will need to ensure that the elections are conducted smoothly and transparently to avoid further controversy and conflict. The opposition, on its part, will continue to mobilize its supporters and challenge the government’s legitimacy.

In conclusion, the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Punjab elections has deepened the political fault lines in Pakistan, with the government and the opposition taking diametrically opposed positions. The country’s democratic institutions are facing a severe test, and it remains to be seen whether they can withstand the pressure and uphold the rule of law.

Europe’s Response to ChatGPT: Balancing AI Regulation and Privacy Concerns

The recent move by Italy to temporarily ban OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a popular generative AI chatbot, has sparked discussions among European countries about the need for harsher measures to regulate the emerging field of AI. While European parliamentarians are still debating the content and scope of the EU AI Act, some privacy regulators are finding that existing tools such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) can be applied to generative AI companies.

The Italian privacy regulator, Garante, accused OpenAI of failing to verify the age of ChatGPT users and the lack of a legal basis for the collection and storage of personal data to train the chatbot. This has prompted other European countries, such as France, Ireland, and Germany, to reach out to Italy for more information and consider similar actions. However, the responses from different countries vary. While Italy’s deputy prime minister criticized the ban as excessive, Germany’s government spokesperson stated that a ban would not be necessary.

Privacy regulators see this as an opportunity to shape the future of AI by leveraging existing regulations such as the GDPR. Dessislava Savova, a partner at law firm Clifford Chance, commented that “the points they raise are fundamental and show that GDPR does offer tools for the regulators to be involved and engaged in shaping the future of AI.”

OpenAI has taken ChatGPT offline in Italy and has not yet responded to regulators. However, the company has stated that it actively works to reduce personal data in training its AI systems. It’s worth noting that OpenAI does not have offices in the European Union.

The Italian investigation into OpenAI was triggered by a cyber security breach last month, during which users were shown excerpts of other users’ ChatGPT conversations and their financial information. Italy is the first Western country to take action against an AI-powered chatbot.

While ChatGPT has been specifically targeted by Italy, other AI platforms such as Google’s Bard may also face scrutiny in the future. Experts believe that Google is more likely to have taken privacy concerns into account due to its history in Europe and the size of its organization.

In conclusion, the ban on ChatGPT by Italy has ignited discussions among European countries about the regulation of AI and privacy concerns. While privacy regulators see this as an opportunity to use existing regulations to shape the future of AI, governments have varying opinions on the necessity of bans. The response from OpenAI and other AI companies, as well as the outcome of ongoing investigations, will likely have significant implications for the future of AI regulation in Europe. As the field of AI continues to rapidly evolve, finding a balance between innovation and privacy protection will be a key challenge for policymakers and stakeholders.

In conclusion, Ayan Mukerji’s announcement that he will be directing War 2 has generated a lot of excitement among fans of the YRF spy universe. With Hrithik Roshan in the lead role and Mukerji at the helm, fans can expect an epic action spectacle that will take the franchise to new heights.

Supreme Court recalls interim order

It appears that there was a recent development in the Supreme Court of Pakistan involving a six-member bench that recalled an interim order issued by Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Aminuddin Khan. The interim order, which had been issued on March 29, had ordered the postponement of suo motu matters and questioned the chief justice’s power to form special benches or decide their members. However, the newly formed six-member bench deemed the order “both without and beyond jurisdiction” and recalled it.

The detailed court order stated that Justice Isa and Justice Khan’s order was in violation of a previous five-member bench’s order from August 2021 that only the chief justice could take suo motu notice. The court also agreed with the observations made by the chief justice in a circular issued by the SC registrar’s office, stating that they rectified an unwarranted assumption of jurisdiction and interference with powers that should solely rest with the chief justice.

The court further stated that since the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) had informed that the regulations granting additional marks for memorizing the Holy Quran were not in force and the current regulations did not allow such marks, no further proceedings in the suo motu case were required, and the case was disposed of as having been infructuous.

Justice Isa had proposed in his previous order that cases under Article 184(3) of the Constitution be postponed until amendments were made to Supreme Court Rules 1980 regarding the chief justice’s discretionary powers to form benches. He argued that the chief justice could not substitute his personal wisdom for that of the Constitution and that collective determination by the chief justice and judges of the Supreme Court could not be assumed by an individual, even the chief justice.

This recent development in the Supreme Court of Pakistan highlights ongoing debates and discussions about the powers and jurisdiction of the chief justice and other judges in the country’s judicial system. It also underscores the importance of adherence to constitutional principles and established rules and procedures in the functioning of the judiciary. Overall, it reflects the dynamic nature of the legal system and the complexities involved in the interpretation and application of the law. It’s worth noting that legal matters and decisions can change over time and it’s important to stay updated with the latest developments in the judiciary.

Former US President Donald Trump Faces Criminal Charges in Highly Anticipated Court Appearance

0

Former US President Donald Trump is set to surrender himself in court on Tuesday, facing charges related to hush money paid to a porn star before the 2016 election. Trump, who will be the first former US president to face criminal charges, plans to plead not guilty to the undisclosed charges.

The former president will travel from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach to New York City on Monday and spend the night at Trump Tower before appearing in court the next day. The arraignment is set to take place at the downtown Manhattan courthouse at 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) on Tuesday, and Trump will return to Florida that evening.

The New York Police Department has tightened security measures around the courthouse and Trump Tower, as demonstrations are expected at those sites. Trump’s lawyers hope to dismiss the charges, which were brought after a grand jury heard evidence about a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in the days leading up to the 2016 presidential election. Daniels claimed she was paid to keep silent about a sexual encounter she had with Trump in 2006, a claim that Trump denies.

Trump served as president from 2017 to 2021 and launched a bid to regain the presidency in 2024, aiming to deny Democratic President Joe Biden a second term in office. The indictment was announced after an investigation led by Manhattan’s Democratic district attorney, Alvin Bragg, which Trump and his allies have characterized as politically motivated.

Joe Tacopina, Trump’s lawyer, said he expects more details surrounding the arraignment to be resolved on Monday and that the Secret Service, which protects former presidents, also has a role to play on Tuesday. Tacopina said it was unlikely that there would be a “perp walk” in which an individual who has been charged is paraded in front of the news media, due to security concerns.

Trump is expected to appear before Justice Juan Merchan, the judge who presided over a criminal trial last year in which Trump’s real estate company was convicted of tax fraud. The judge has asked both sides to submit their positions on whether cameras and video should be allowed in the courtroom and will decide on the issue on Monday.

The tight security measures and the fact that a former US president is facing criminal charges have made this a highly anticipated and significant event in US politics. The outcome of the arraignment and the subsequent legal battle could have significant implications for Trump’s political future, as well as for the wider political landscape in the US.

Stories ahead!

Supreme Court Reserves Verdict on PTI’s Petition for Postponement of Polls in Punjab

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has reserved its verdict on the petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding the postponement of polls in Punjab. The decision will be announced on Tuesday, after a full day’s hearing on Monday.

The three-member bench hearing the case was led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial and included Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan. During the hearing, the CJP expressed his concerns about the possibility of something happening during the polls and the court being blamed for it. He stated that political parties were given the option to resolve the matter through political dialogue, but none of them responded to the offer.

The CJP emphasized that the Constitution is clear about when elections should be held and that people believed they were above the Constitution and wanted their cases to be decided by judges of their preference. However, the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan denied that anyone had done so.

The government lawyers’ arguments were not heard by the court, as the government had declared ‘no-confidence’ in the SC bench hearing the case. PML-N lawyer Akram Sheikh stated that he had appeared before the SC to assist it and that he had the utmost respect for the apex court, but the ruling parties had expressed no confidence in the three-member bench hearing the case. The CJP instructed him to provide a written submission for the court’s review.

The court also directed the defense secretary to submit a classified report explaining why the armed forces are not available to perform security duties during the provincial assembly elections. The CJP asked whether other forces like the Pakistan Air Force, Navy, and Rangers could be considered if the armed forces were not available. He also asked whether reserved army officials could be called for elections duty.

The PTI lawyer Ali Zafar said that he did not want to review the sensitive information as it was not necessary to see the security issues in this case. Justice Bandial commented that if the entire army was too busy to provide safety for the polls, then help could be taken from the navy and the airforce. He added that the Election Commission of Pakistan (PTI) said 50% of the polling stations were safe.

The defense secretary informed the court that the security situation in Punjab was serious but could not divulge details in an open court as he did not want the information to reach the enemy.

In conclusion, the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the PTI’s petition for the postponement of polls in Punjab is awaited. The court has expressed its concerns about the possibility of something happening during the polls, and the government’s no-confidence in the bench hearing the case has further complicated matters. The court has directed the defense secretary to submit a classified report on why the armed forces are not available for security duties during the provincial assembly elections, and it remains to be seen whether other forces can be considered for the task. The situation is tense, and everyone awaits the verdict with bated breath.

Naseem Shah Clarifies Misunderstanding About His Relationship Status

0

Pakistani cricket sensation Naseem Shah has been in the limelight for his impressive performances on the field. However, a recent Instagram post caused a stir on social media, with rumors circulating that he may be getting engaged or married.

The post in question featured Shah sitting with his father and a relative in what appeared to be a drawing room. The cricketer was dressed casually in a black t-shirt and namaz cap, while his father and the other man were dressed in traditional attire. The caption read, “Blessed with the best Alhamdullah,” which led many to believe that he was announcing his engagement or marriage.

However, the 20-year-old paceman quickly took to Instagram to clarify the misunderstanding. In a new post, he stated that the previous post “wasn’t about getting engaged or nikahfied,” and that it was simply a picture from a family gathering for iftar during the holy month of Ramadan.

Shah’s father had previously spoken about his son’s marriage plans, stating that he has no intention of getting married for the next four or five years. Therefore, it is clear that the rumors about his engagement or marriage were baseless.

This clarification from Shah highlights the importance of not jumping to conclusions based on social media posts. It is easy to misinterpret a picture or caption, and it is essential to verify the information before spreading rumors.

Naseem Shah’s cricketing talent is undeniable, and his performance on the field speaks for itself. He was recently appointed as the honorary DSP for Quetta police, further cementing his status as a rising star in Pakistan.

In his international career, Shah has played in 15 Tests, five ODIs, and 16 T20Is, taking a total of 74 wickets. PTI Restores Contacts with Old Allies, Plans to Call Meeting of All Parties

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi has announced that his party has restored contacts with all its old allies, including the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), and will soon call a meeting of all parties to discuss the next plan of action. Elahi also claimed that the Balochistan government and the Grand Democratic Alliance also have strong reservations about the incumbent government’s policies. He criticized the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for boycotting the Supreme Court’s three-judge bench hearing the polls delay the case and accused them of making unconstitutional demands and interfering in the court’s affairs. Elahi predicted that the PDM-led government’s last resort to stop the election would also prove unsuccessful.

In a statement, Elahi said that the MQM-P suffered a significant political loss after its alliance with the PDM, and some in the MQM-P believe that it is no longer beneficial to continue the partnership. This comes after the MQM-P criticized the ruling party in Sindh, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), for engaging in dynastic politics and voiced concerns regarding its agreement with the PPP. Despite being part of the PDM, the MQM-P has repeatedly expressed its reservations on various matters with the PPP and the federal government.

Elahi’s announcement of restored contacts with old allies comes amid mounting legal pressure on the PTI government and the PDM’s efforts to create counterweights to it. The PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, who is an absconder from the country, attended a recent PDM meeting where the decision to boycott the Supreme Court’s three-judge bench was made. Elahi criticized Nawaz Sharif’s participation in the meeting and called it a “serious joke with the nation and institutions.”
