Pakistan’s federal cabinet has approved Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recommendation to promote Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal — a rare military honour in the country’s history.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, where members discussed national security, economic priorities, and budget planning. However, the elevation of General Munir stood out as the most notable outcome.

Officials said the move recognises his exceptional leadership during Pakistan’s recent victory in the Battle of Haq, which followed an unprovoked Indian attack on the night of May 6–7.

Cabinet members praised the military’s swift and decisive response, highlighting General Munir’s role in defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and ensuring civilian safety.

The cabinet also paid tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict, offering Fatiha and expressing deep appreciation for the public’s unity during a critical time.

The Prime Minister briefed the cabinet on post-conflict developments and said Indian forces had deliberately targeted civilians, including women and children. He commended the media for promoting a unified national message in response to aggression.

In another key decision, the government extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, acknowledging his leadership during the conflict.

The federal cabinet stated that these military achievements had boosted national morale and enhanced Pakistan’s image on the global stage, reinforcing the country’s commitment to peace and resilience under pressure.
