Army Chief Asim Munir to Serve Until 2027, Confirms Rana Sanaullah

Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir will serve until November 2027, as allowed by law.

In a press briefing, Sanaullah clarified that after recent amendments, no separate notification was required to formalise the tenure of service chiefs. “The law ensures automatic retirement once the five-year term is completed. There is no ambiguity in this arrangement,” he said.

He highlighted that General Munir’s performance since assuming command justified his continued leadership. “Pakistan’s armed forces have achieved important successes under him. This stability is crucial given the challenges we face,” Sanaullah stated.

The minister also recalled that extensions have been a recurring practice in Pakistan’s history, with several chiefs availing them in the past. He emphasised that such measures were often necessary to ensure continuity in policy and command.

Observers say the confirmation provides clarity amid speculation about the Army Chief’s future. The government has presented the decision as a legal and stabilising step, aimed at avoiding uncertainty within the military and political domains.
