The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has uncovered a new dimension in Pakistan’s largest investigation into the illegal trade of stolen data, with mobile applications now identified as part of the network.

According to investigators, apps were not only being used to share information but also to facilitate the sale of stolen data. The NCCIA has expanded its probe to include these applications alongside the websites already under scrutiny.

Sources said the agency is analysing whether the compromised data was leaked before or after 2023, a detail that could help determine the scale of breaches. Investigators have traced several digital platforms suspected of involvement and are moving to have them shut down permanently.

Officials confirmed that legal proceedings under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) will be launched against those found responsible. Arrests of individuals linked to the apps and websites are also expected in the coming days.

The findings highlight the evolving nature of cybercrime, where criminals are increasingly shifting from traditional websites to mobile platforms to exploit user data. Authorities said this trend poses a growing challenge to cybersecurity enforcement in Pakistan.

The NCCIA stressed its commitment to protecting citizens’ personal information and vowed to dismantle the networks behind the trade.
