NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot have safely returned to the International Space Station after completing a 6-hour, 23-minute ISS spacewalk. The mission included an important communication repair, while Adenot also made history during the spacewalk.
Sophie Adenot Makes History:
Sophie Adenot became the first French woman to perform a spacewalk. She and Menon spent hours working outside the ISS, where even simple tasks can become difficult because astronauts must work in bulky spacesuits and zero gravity.
The astronauts had a major repair job to complete. They needed to remove a large Space-to-Ground antenna that had stopped working in November.
Astronauts Repair the ISS Antenna:
The faulty antenna could no longer track NASA’s data relay satellites. This meant it could not perform its normal communication job. Fortunately, another antenna has continued to support the space station. It allows the ISS to send important information and data to Mission Control in Houston.
Menon and Adenot successfully removed the damaged antenna from its position on the station’s outer structure. However, the repair took longer than expected.
Why the Spacewalk Took Longer:
The astronauts faced problems while disconnecting the antenna’s electrical connections. They also needed extra time to secure its moving parts before placing it in a temporary storage position.
Because of these delays, flight controllers decided not to install the replacement antenna during the same spacewalk. Instead, the astronauts safely secured the old antenna to the station.
Another Spacewalk May Be Needed:
The astronauts will need to return outside the ISS to install the new antenna. Mission managers may add the work to another spacewalk planned for August 25, or they could schedule it for a later date.
Menon said the team had prepared for unexpected problems. Their careful planning helped the astronauts deal with the delays safely.
A Successful Mission:
Although the astronauts did not complete the entire antenna replacement, they finished an important part of the repair. The ISS spacewalk also showed how astronauts and ground teams can adjust their plans when work in space takes longer than expected.
For Adenot, the mission was even more special because she made history as the first French woman to carry out a spacewalk. The remaining antenna work will now wait for another mission outside the International Space Station.
