Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif has proposed a replacement for Babar Azam as the captain of the national cricket team following their elimination from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The criticism against Babar Azam’s leadership has been mounting since the Asia Cup 2023, with calls for a change at the helm resonating among former cricketers, fans, and across social media platforms. Mohammad Asif, who played 72 matches and took 165 wickets for Pakistan, suggests that opening batter Abdullah Shafique should take over as captain, citing his solid performances and displayed leadership qualities.

Abdullah Shafique, a part of Pakistan’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 squad, showcased impressive form by scoring 360 runs in eight matches at an average of 42 and a striking rate of 93.33. His notable contributions include a century and three fifties during the tournament. Mohammad Asif advocates for the elevation of Shafique to the captaincy, emphasizing the need for a fresh approach and leadership in the team.

While acknowledging the suggestion of appointing wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed as captain for Pakistan’s tour of Australia, Mohammad Asif expresses reservations, viewing it as a backward step for the team. Instead, he calls for a strategic, forward-looking approach from the cricket board, advocating the development of a comprehensive 10-year plan to propel the team forward.

The proposal from Mohammad Asif adds a new dimension to the ongoing discussions surrounding Pakistan’s cricket team, injecting an element of debate regarding leadership choices in the aftermath of their World Cup exit. As cricket enthusiasts and analysts ponder the potential impact of such a change, the cricketing landscape for Pakistan remains dynamic, with leadership decisions playing a pivotal role in shaping the team’s future.
