Rawalpindi flooding became a serious concern after heavy rain hit Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The intense rainfall flooded low-lying areas, disrupted traffic and quickly raised the water level.
Around 200 millimetres of rain fell in Rawalpindi. Shamsabad received about 201mm, while New Katarian recorded nearly 186mm. The heavy rain also caused water from nearby drains to back up and enter residential areas.
As the situation became worse, authorities issued an evacuation warning for people living near Nullah Lai and other low-lying areas. Rescue teams moved into affected places and help residents.
The water level at Katarian later started to fall. However, it remained close to the evacuation level. Therefore, officials continued to monitor the situation and kept residents alert.
The heavy rainfall reportedly broke a 16-year rainfall record in Rawalpindi. The city last saw similar intense rainfall in 2010. Because of the dangerous weather, the Rawalpindi administration announced a public holiday and closed educational institutions.
Rescue 1122, the Pakistan Army, Rangers and other departments stayed on standby. Officials also asked people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from Nullah Lai and other flooded roads.
Residents were advised to remain indoors and follow official instructions. As the rain continued to affect the twin cities, authorities focused on preventing further damage and helping people in the most affected areas.
