The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) has reached a major milestone by completing 1,000 successful liver transplants, making it one of the leading transplant centres in the world.
The institute was the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who first launched the project in 2017 during his time as the Chief Minister of Punjab. His goal was to create a world-class medical facility that could provide advanced treatment for liver and kidney diseases right here in Pakistan.
So far, PKLI has performed 1,000 liver transplants, 1,100 kidney transplants, and 14 bone marrow transplants, while providing medical care to over 4 million patients.
One of PKLI’s most remarkable aspects is its commitment to free healthcare, around 80% of its patients receive treatment free of cost, meeting international medical standards. For those who can afford to pay, the treatment cost remains much lower than in other countries, at about Rs6 million.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep gratitude for this achievement and appreciated the dedicated team behind PKLI’s success. He also praised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her efforts to revive and strengthen the institute.
He said, “PKLI has become a symbol of hope for thousands of patients who cannot afford expensive treatment abroad.” This milestone highlights Pakistan’s growing ability to provide world-class healthcare and stands as a proud achievement for the nation.
