Heavy monsoon rains have increased water levels in several rivers across Punjab, prompting authorities to issue a Punjab flood alert. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that the Chenab River could experience higher flooding in the coming days, urging people in vulnerable areas to stay alert.
According to the PDMA, low-level flooding has been recorded at Kalabagh on the Indus River and at Khanki on the Chenab River. However, water levels in most other rivers across Punjab remain within normal limits.
The situation became more serious after India opened the gates of the Salal Dam following heavy rainfall and flash floods in Indian-administered Kashmir. The released water has increased the flow of the Chenab River.
Officials said the Chenab River is currently flowing at a medium flood level. Water levels are expected to rise further between July 20 and July 24 because of continued monsoon rains in the upper catchment areas.
Authorities believe the flood wave will move from Head Marala to Khanki and then to Qadirabad within the next 24 to 48 hours. Emergency teams are closely monitoring the river to respond quickly if conditions worsen. Several districts have been identified as being at risk of flooding. These include Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Jhang, Multan, and Muzaffargarh.
The PDMA and the Pakistan Meteorological Department have activated emergency response centres. Officials are monitoring river levels around the clock and have asked local administrations to remain prepared.
Residents living near rivers have been advised to stay updated through official weather and flood warnings. People should avoid unnecessary travel to flooded areas and follow the instructions of local authorities.
