ECP Announces Election Date in Punjab

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has recently given a much-awaited verdict to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), directing it to announce the date for the general elections in the province of Punjab immediately.

The verdict was announced by Justice Jawad Hassan, who emphasized that the ECP was bound by the Constitution to hold the general elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the assembly. The decision was made after the PTI approached the LHC seeking a court order for the Punjab Governor to announce the election date.

The PTI, in its petition filed on January 27, argued that the assembly was dissolved on January 12 and that the elections should be held between April 9 and 17. The LHC has now directed the ECP to announce the election schedule, taking into account the reasons for the decision and after consultation with the governor of Punjab, who is the constitutional head of the province.
