Patriotic Film Icon Manoj Kumar Dies Peacefully at 87

Veteran Indian actor Manoj Kumar, celebrated for his iconic roles in patriotic Hindi films, has died at the age of 87 due to heart-related complications, as confirmed by his son Kunal Goswami.

Kumar passed away peacefully on Friday in Mumbai, following a prolonged period of health issues.

“It’s the grace of God that he bid adieu to this world peacefully,” said Goswami. “His cremation will take place tomorrow [Saturday].”

Manoj Kumar, whose real name was Harikrishan Goswami, adopted his screen name in line with Bollywood tradition. He gained nationwide recognition for acting and directing films centered on national unity, pride, and patriotism.

His contribution to cinema earned him the affectionate title “Bharat Kumar”, symbolising his embodiment of the spirit of India.

Among his most famous works are:

  • Upkar (1967)

  • Purab Aur Pachhim (1970)

  • Kranti (1981)

These films not only captured the hearts of millions but also elevated the patriotic genre in Indian cinema.

Kumar was honored with several national film awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest recognition in cinema.

He was also affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and remained a respected figure in political and artistic circles alike.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, describing Kumar as an “icon” of Indian cinema whose work “ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences, posting on X:

“He has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema.”

Actor Akshay Kumar shared a heartfelt message:

“I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity.”
