The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has blocked the Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) and passport of Arshad Khan, the globally recognized “Chaiwala,” over questions regarding his Pakistani nationality.

In response, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned senior officials from NADRA and the Emigration Department to explain the reasons behind the decision. A hearing has been scheduled for April 17, with Justice Jawad Hassan of the LHC Rawalpindi bench demanding that the authorities bring complete records to justify their actions.

During the preliminary hearing, Umer Ijaz Gilani, Khan’s legal counsel, described the Chaiwala’s rise to fame as a symbol of the Pakistani dream. At just 17 years old, Arshad Khan became an overnight sensation when a photograph of him making tea went viral, launching him into global stardom.

However, this fame has now become a source of trouble. Gilani argued that the blockage of Khan’s CNIC and passport was a result of a baseless rumor aired by a news channel, which is now threatening his career and livelihood. “This bureaucratic error could jeopardize his entire future,” Gilani expressed in court, underscoring the serious consequences for Khan’s business and reputation.

In a surprising turn, the law officer representing NADRA disputed the legitimacy of the petition, claiming that Khan had failed to submit adequate documentation to prove his Pakistani nationality. The officer argued that this justified the suspension of Khan’s official documents.

Gilani, however, countered these claims by stressing that Khan’s family had long been established in Pakistan. He argued that demanding proof of residency prior to 1978 was unreasonable and harmful.

In his defense, Gilani cited various constitutional rights, claiming that Khan’s fundamental rights to livelihood, dignity, and fair treatment were being violated. He further argued that NADRA’s actions were unjustified and violated the National Database and Registration Authority Ordinance, 2000.
