Florence Pugh Shines in Gritty, Grounded ‘Thunderbolts’

Marvel’s latest film Thunderbolts signals a shift in direction for the sprawling superhero universe. Moving away from the sleek and epic tone of earlier entries, this story offers a scrappier, more intimate experience — and is all the better for it.

Directed by Jake Schreier, the film puts Florence Pugh’s Yelena at the centre of a flawed group of former operatives now deemed expendable by the system that once relied on them. The story follows this reluctant team as they scramble to survive while being hunted by their powerful former boss, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played with chilling charm by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Unlike the all-powerful heroes of previous Marvel instalments, the Thunderbolts are deeply human — bruised, emotionally burdened, and physically vulnerable. This refreshing setup brings the focus back to character-driven drama, dark humour, and messy relationships.

Alongside Pugh are David Harbour’s washed-up Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan’s disoriented Winter Soldier, and Wyatt Russell’s bitter ex-Captain America figure. Their uneasy alliance adds to the film’s blend of comedy and chaos, reminiscent of earlier spy thrillers more than standard superhero fare.

One drawback is that viewers unfamiliar with previous Marvel titles like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may struggle to fully grasp the backstories. Still, Thunderbolts largely stands on its own, offering a tight, well-paced narrative that doesn’t lean on multiverse gimmicks.

Visually gritty and emotionally sharp, the film addresses themes of regret, identity, and redemption — adding unexpected weight to its action-heavy premise. And Pugh’s layered performance, balancing dry wit with raw vulnerability, is arguably one of Marvel’s best in years.
