Pakistan’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has sanctioned a nationwide subsidy worth Rs9 billion to support the adoption of electric vehicles, particularly two- and three-wheelers, the Finance Division confirmed on Tuesday.

The decision came during a meeting chaired virtually by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The scheme, proposed by the Ministry of Industries and Production, will be implemented in two phases during the 2025–26 fiscal year.

Under the plan, 116,000 electric bikes and 3,170 electric rickshaws/loaders will be rolled out. In the initial phase, 40,000 bikes and 1,000 rickshaws will be distributed. The programme also includes incentives for high-achieving students in government colleges, who will be awarded electric bikes free of cost.

The ECC meeting also addressed additional financial matters. A Rs30 billion grant was approved to cover previous fiscal year payments under the Telegraphic Transfer Charges Incentive Scheme.

Another key decision was the conditional approval of a Rs2 billion financial package for Quaid-i-Azam University. This grant is dependent on the university preparing a clear financial self-sufficiency plan.

Separately, Punjab’s Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced a Rs100,000 reward for motorcyclists converting petrol bikes into electric vehicles. Speaking in Lahore, she said the scheme is part of the Green Credit Programme, which encourages citizens to contribute to environmental efforts like tree planting.

The Green Credit initiative also allows individuals and companies to “adopt” parks and forests to help offset their carbon footprints. Interested participants can apply via the official website.
