WHEN PEOPLE ARE OCCUPIED, RESISTANCE IS JUSTIFIED!

In the tumultuous arena of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one thing becomes strikingly clear the Palestinian people’s determination to resist, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Amidst the myriad of discussions surrounding the conflict, critics often rush to condemn what they label as ‘aggressive Palestinian resistance tactics.’ However, before we jump to conclusions, it is essential to delve into the undeniable truth the great sacrifices made by Palestinians in their peaceful quest for justice.

Let us take a step back and reflect upon the “Great March of Return,” a poignant chapter in Palestinian history that unfolded in Gaza between 2018 and 2019. For one year and eight months, tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza gathered along the military fence erected by Israel to peacefully protest against the suffocating blockade and to demand their right of return. What made this movement particularly remarkable was the steadfast commitment to non-violence. These protesters were unarmed, holding a mirror to the world, showing that they were willing to choose the path of peace despite decades of oppression.

It is crucial to remember how Israel chose to respond to this display of peaceful resistance. Tragically, 223 Palestinians were killed, and more than 10,000 were injured. This was a glaring illustration of the harsh reality faced by Palestinians who yearned for liberation. This tragic chapter in Palestinian history cannot be ignored or minimized. It is a testament to their unwavering commitment to justice and their willingness to pursue their rights through peaceful means.

It is essential to acknowledge the broader context in which these events unfolded. In 2018, Palestinians had already endured more than 70 years of occupation, colonization, and dispossession. Their determination to remain non-violent, even in the face of such historical injustices, is a testament to their commitment to peace and justice. However, the price they paid for their peaceful resistance was far too high.

This leads us to an uncomfortable truth: the Israeli response to Palestinian actions, whether peaceful or not, has often been met with violence. This disturbing pattern calls for a reevaluation of our focus. Instead of condemning Palestinian resistance tactics, it is high time to question the actions and intentions of Israel.

The world must reflect on the glaring double standard when it comes to condemning violence. Where was the global outrage when those 223 innocent Palestinians were killed by Israel during peaceful protests? Where was the demand for Israel to condemn these acts of aggression? It is imperative to recognize the disproportionate use of force against Palestinians and the lack of accountability for such actions.

In light of these stark realities, it is clear that the onus cannot solely be on the Palestinian people to determine the path to peaceful resistance. The international community must hold Israel accountable for its actions, demand an end to the occupation, and support a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Palestinian struggle for justice has been an enduring tale of peaceful resistance, even in the face of overwhelming odds. It is time to shift the focus away from condemning their tactics and instead question Israel’s actions. The international community must stand with the Palestinian people, demanding an end to the violence and a just resolution to this decades-long conflict. It is the only way to bring peace and stability to the region and ensure a brighter future for all.
