Islamabad’s Safe City project is undergoing a major technological expansion, with the planned addition of 3,200 artificial intelligence-powered cameras to improve monitoring and crime prevention across the capital.
According to Director General Safe City Islamabad, Shakir Hussain Dawar, the proposal — valued at Rs. 17.4 billion — has been formally submitted to modernize the city’s surveillance infrastructure using advanced AI tools.

At present, Islamabad has 2,758 surveillance cameras in operation, around 700 of which are AI-enabled. The new upgrade will introduce facial recognition, number plate scanning, and traffic violation detection, providing broader coverage of city entry points and key urban areas.
To handle increased data processing needs, seven high-performance servers have already been added to the network. Officials said another 14 servers will be installed soon, enabling older cameras to function with AI technology.

Authorities revealed that AI surveillance has already led to the identification of 77 criminal gangs, with 32 arrests made so far. Future upgrades include rooftop cameras with the capability to capture clear images of passengers inside vehicles.
The initiative highlights Islamabad’s growing shift towards technology-driven policing and real-time digital security, as part of broader efforts to enhance public safety in the city.
