The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has started its search for a new full-time head coach after Aaqib Javed, who had been serving on an interim basis, opted not to extend his contract. His departure follows Pakistan’s underwhelming campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Among the names being considered, former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has reportedly emerged as a strong contender. Currently leading Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Hesson guided the franchise to a title win last season. His coaching experience at both international and franchise levels has made him a prominent figure in PCB’s shortlist.
Sources close to the matter have indicated that early discussions have taken place between PCB and Hesson. Other foreign coaches, including Australia’s Simon Katich and New Zealand batting coach Luke Ronchi, have also been contacted. However, talks are still in the preliminary stage. A PCB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested that Hesson may be open to the role if negotiations proceed positively.

All three coaches had previously declined similar offers due to scheduling conflicts, but the PCB is hopeful circumstances may now align in their favour.
Foreign coaches, however, remain cautious. The board’s treatment of past coaches—such as Mickey Arthur and Grant Bradburn, who were dismissed just six months into their contracts after Pakistan’s poor ODI World Cup performance—has raised concerns. Jason Gillespie’s departure following the Australia tour and Gary Kirsten’s refusal to return after his feedback was reportedly ignored, have added to this uncertainty.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s recent results continue to worry fans and officials alike. The team finished at the bottom of the World Test Championship table after a loss to the West Indies, failed to secure a single win in the Champions Trophy, and managed just one victory in nine white-ball matches during their tour of New Zealand earlier this year.
