ICC Imposes Five-Year Ban on Renowned Bangladeshi Cricketer

Bangladesh cricketer, Shohely Akhter, has been banned from all cricket for five years due to corruption charges, the International Cricket Council (ICC), said.

The governing body stated that the 36-year-old spinner had admitted to breaching five provisions of its anti-corruption code.

Shohely offered a teammate two million takas ($16,465) to get out hit wicket in a 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup match against Australia.

According to the ICC, right-arm off break bowler made the approach through a series of voice notes sent via Facebook Messenger.

The player she contacted, however, rejected the offer and reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of ICC, providing evidence in the form of the recorded messages.

Shohely Akhter, who last represented Bangladesh in 2022, was not part of the squad for the 2023 tournament in South Africa.

Shohely reportedly admitted to sending the messages but claimed that her intention was to demonstrate that team members were not involved in match-fixing.

The ICC stated that Akhter had cooperated with the investigation, and after considering all circumstances, a five-year ban was deemed appropriate.
