England’s most capped rugby player and long-time Leicester Tigers star, Ben Youngs, has revealed plans to retire at the end of the ongoing season, concluding a professional journey that has spanned 18 years.

The 35-year-old, often hailed as one of the top scrum-halves of his time, made his debut for Leicester Tigers in 2007. This past weekend, he made his 332nd appearance for the club. On the international stage, Youngs represented England 127 times between 2010 and 2023, taking part in four Rugby World Cups.

Sharing his thoughts on retirement, Youngs admitted to having mixed emotions. While there was sadness in knowing his playing days were nearly over, he said his attention remained firmly on the rest of the season and what his team could still achieve. He added that there was plenty of rugby left before the final whistle on his career.

Youngs spoke warmly about his connection with Leicester, saying the club had been at the heart of his life for nearly two decades. He reflected on the many highs and special moments he had experienced with the team and expressed pride in remaining a one-club player throughout his career.

His loyalty to the club, he explained, meant he never considered playing for another side. He said being able to retire as a one-club man would stand as one of his greatest personal honours.

Although Youngs stepped away from international rugby two years ago, he continues to be a key part of Leicester’s campaign this season. With five Premiership titles already to his name, he is now aiming to add a sixth before he calls time on a remarkable rugby journey.
