AS Roma has parted ways with manager Jose Mourinho with immediate effect, the club announced on Tuesday. The decision was made with the “best interests” of the team in mind, according to the club’s owners. Mourinho, who previously coached Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United, was appointed as Roma’s coach in 2021. Under his leadership, Roma won the third-tier Europa Conference League in 2022 and reached the Europa League final in 2023. However, the team has struggled in the current season, taking just four points from their last five league matches and being eliminated from the Coppa Italia last week in a 1-0 defeat to rivals Lazio.

The final straw came after a 3-1 loss to AC Milan, leaving Roma in ninth place in the league, 22 points behind Inter Milan. The club’s owners thanked Mourinho for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club and wished him and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors. The decision to part ways with Mourinho was made to ensure an immediate change in the best interests of the club. Mourinho’s three-year spell at Roma peaked with them winning the Europa Conference League title, their first trophy in 11 years, in their first European final since 1991. Roma next host 18th-placed Verona on Saturday.
