Manchester United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim worsened on Sunday following a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham — their ninth Premier League loss at Old Trafford this season, and one that leaves them languishing just two spots above the relegation zone.

With only 39 points from 36 games, United are guaranteed their worst-ever finish in the Premier League era. Even with two wins in their final matches, they cannot finish higher than 13th — five places below their previous lowest finish in 2023/24.

Amorim, who had previously delivered strong short-term turnarounds at Braga and Sporting CP, has seen his United side slide further. Since replacing Erik ten Hag, results have dipped even more, with United now among the worst-performing teams in the league over the past two months.

The loss to West Ham also extended their winless run in the league to two months. Their most recent Premier League victory came against Leicester in March. Excluding matches against already relegated sides, United have won just one of their last 17 league games.

Goal scoring remains a major issue. United have failed to score in 14 matches this season — including 10 times under Amorim — and have found the net just 30 times in total. Defensively, the team has conceded first in 12 home games, setting an unwanted Premier League record.

Amorim recently expressed concern that the club is losing its identity, reportedly telling reporters that United no longer carry the mindset of a “massive club.” His frustrations reflect a season where the Red Devils have not only fallen short of expectations but also set historical lows in performance.

Their next fixtures will decide how much further they can fall in what has become a painful chapter in Manchester United’s storied history.
