The Sindh government has approved key steps to introduce 1,000 electric buses in Karachi under the Peoples Green Transport Project, aiming to improve urban mobility and support sustainable development.
The approval came during a meeting of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy Board, chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. Senior officials including ministers Sharjeel Inam Memon, Saeed Ghani, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, and Transport Secretary Asad Zamin were also present.
The board agreed to move forward with hiring transaction advisers to evaluate and guide the project, which has already cleared its technical assessment. Instead of starting a new hiring process, the government will retain previously appointed advisers to avoid delays and accelerate implementation.

The proposed plan, submitted by a private consortium, will be assessed for financial and operational viability. If approved, the project will proceed in phases under a public-private partnership model.
The initiative includes deploying 600 buses of 12-meter length and 400 buses of 8 meters. These vehicles will operate on a 10-year concession, with payments made per kilometre. Ten bus depots will be developed to manage operations, and the assets will be transferred to government ownership at the end of the contract.
The meeting also reviewed progress on two other key projects: the 39-kilometre Shahrah-e-Bhutto high-speed corridor and the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone.
