The federal and Sindh governments have declared May 28 a public holiday to commemorate Youm-e-Takbeer, marking the day Pakistan became a nuclear power in 1998.
Youm-e-Takbeer, observed annually, honours the successful nuclear tests carried out in the Chaghai hills of Balochistan, a milestone that placed Pakistan among the world’s nuclear states. The federal announcement was followed by a similar declaration from the Sindh government, which issued a notification confirming that both government and private institutions would remain closed on the day.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has also confirmed its closure on May 28 in line with the nationwide holiday.
This official day off is part of the annual calendar and had already been included in the list of gazetted holidays announced by the Cabinet Division last year.
Youm-e-Takbeer is considered a symbol of national strength and is marked by ceremonies and tributes to the scientists and officials involved in the nuclear programme. The day is also used by political leaders to highlight Pakistan’s defence capabilities and strategic autonomy.
