Trump Hits India Hard: You Sell Russian Oil, You Pay US More

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, bringing the total tariff to 50%, in response to India’s continued purchase and resale of Russian oil.

The move comes days after Trump criticized India for profiting from discounted Russian crude amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The President accused India of re-exporting Russian oil for profit while ignoring the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits,” Trump wrote earlier this week.

He further stated,

“They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.”

This decision significantly escalates trade tensions between the two countries and could have a profound impact on bilateral economic relations. The White House has not yet issued further details about possible additional penalties.
