The World Health Organisation (WHO) chief expressed the nearly insurmountable challenges of improving the “catastrophic” health situation in Gaza. Despite passing an emergency motion for increased medical access, proposed by Afghanistan, Qatar, Yemen, and Morocco, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the extreme difficulty of implementing these measures given the current circumstances.
The motion aims to facilitate the entry of medical personnel and supplies into Gaza, document violence against healthcare workers and patients, and secure funding for hospital reconstruction. However, with Gaza’s health system reduced to a third of its pre-conflict capacity and continuous attacks on healthcare facilities, the situation remains dire.
