Veteran All-Rounder Ends ODI Journey

Glenn Maxwell

Australia’s flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has brought his One Day International (ODI) career to a close, ending a 13-year journey that began in 2012. The 36-year-old confirmed the decision on Monday, expressing that the physical demands of the 50-over format had become increasingly difficult to manage.

Maxwell, who amassed close to 4,000 runs across 149 ODI appearances, revealed that he had already informed selector George Bailey during February’s Champions Trophy that he would not be aiming for the 2027 World Cup. Speaking on the Final Word podcast, he explained that it felt like the right moment for others to step into the role and prepare for the future.

Although the decision had been made earlier, Maxwell’s recent finger injury—which ruled him out of this year’s Indian Premier League—had no bearing on his retirement plans. He continues to deal with the after-effects of a serious leg injury sustained in 2022 but remains committed to representing Australia in T20 internationals.

His exit follows a string of ODI retirements in Australian cricket, with Marcus Stoinis and Steve Smith both stepping away from the format around the time of the Champions Trophy. Maxwell is now the fourth player from the 2023 World Cup-winning squad to retire from ODIs, following David Warner’s departure as well.

Cricket Australia now faces the task of rebuilding a new core group for the 2027 World Cup campaign, with several experienced names stepping aside. Despite moving on from 50-over cricket, Maxwell has not ruled out playing first-class matches and will continue to feature in shorter formats for the national side.
