The United States men’s ice hockey team clinched its first IIHF World Championship title in 92 years with a narrow 1-0 victory over Switzerland in overtime. The gold medal match, played in Stockholm, ended a long title drought dating back to 1933.
Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson became the hero for Team USA, netting the golden goal just over two minutes into sudden-death overtime. He was assisted by Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei, sealing a memorable win after a tense and goalless regulation.

The final was a showcase of elite goaltending. Switzerland’s Leonardo Genoni, who had been exceptional throughout the tournament, faced 39 shots and denied the Americans through 60 minutes. At the other end, Boston Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman stood tall for Team USA, finishing the tournament unbeaten.
The victory carried emotional weight for the American team. Throughout the championship, players paid tribute to Johnny Gaudreau, the late Columbus Blue Jackets forward who tragically passed away last summer. His jersey remained in the dressing room during the tournament and was draped over the trophy after the final whistle.

This gold is the first standalone world title for the U.S. since 1933, though Olympic wins in 1960 and 1980 were also recognized as world championships. With this win, the team builds momentum ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.
Switzerland, despite an impressive campaign, remains in search of its maiden world title after falling short in their 18th loss to the U.S. in 27 encounters.
