Mitchell Starc has retired from T20 internationals after more than a decade of representing Australia in the shortest format. The left-arm fast bowler leaves the arena with 79 wickets in 65 matches, second only to spinner Adam Zampa.
Announcing his decision, Starc said Test cricket remained his highest priority. He pointed to upcoming challenges such as the Ashes, an away series in India, and the 2027 ODI World Cup as reasons for focusing on longer formats. He added that giving younger bowlers a chance to prepare for next year’s T20 World Cup was also important.

Tributes poured in following the announcement. Selector George Bailey hailed Starc’s role in the 2021 T20 World Cup, crediting him with delivering crucial breakthroughs. Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg noted the decision was designed to extend his international career in Tests and ODIs, calling it an example of his selflessness.
Australia’s squad for the T20 series against New Zealand was confirmed shortly afterwards. The side includes Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, and Glenn Maxwell, with Mitchell Marsh as captain. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis and batter Matt Short return after injury layoffs, while Pat Cummins is rested for workload management.
