As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 gears up to resume after a temporary halt triggered by rising military tensions between India and Pakistan, former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has voiced serious concerns over the safety of foreign players.

In a strongly worded column that has stirred debate across the cricketing world, Johnson advised overseas players—particularly Australians like Pat Cummins and Travis Head—to think twice before returning to what he described as an environment fraught with risk. He stated that, in his view, personal safety should come before financial rewards.

Having played in six IPL seasons with multiple franchises, Johnson’s opinions carry weight, especially at a time when the tournament finds itself overshadowed by political instability.

The IPL was paused earlier this month following a brief armed standoff between the neighbouring nations. Although tensions have since eased and both the IPL and Pakistan Super League (PSL) are set to continue, Johnson questioned whether the decision to proceed truly considers player well-being.

He also pointed to behind-the-scenes efforts by the BCCI to bring back foreign players—even those whose teams are no longer in playoff contention—as a troubling sign. Reports suggest that Cummins and Head, despite their team’s elimination, are still expected to honour their contracts.

South Africa, meanwhile, has instructed its players to return home by May 26, regardless of the IPL’s schedule. Cricket Australia, in contrast, has left the decision to individual players.

With the World Test Championship final scheduled just eight days after the IPL ends on June 3, Johnson warned that the tight turnaround could lead to fatigue and increase injury risks.
