Speculation is growing around Misbah-ul-Haq’s possible return to the national cricket team setup, this time as the red-ball head coach. Former cricketer Basit Ali sparked the conversation by congratulating the ex-Test captain on social media, hinting at his potential appointment. However, no official announcement has been made yet by either the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) or Misbah himself.
Basit’s message, shared on X (formerly Twitter), included a picture of Misbah in Pakistan’s Test attire, leading many to believe that the news may be confirmed soon. His post came shortly after the PCB named Mike Hesson as the new white-ball head coach of the men’s team.

Hesson, a seasoned coach from New Zealand, will officially begin his role on May 26. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi shared the news online, highlighting Hesson’s global coaching record and his experience in developing competitive teams. His first task will be leading Pakistan in a T20I series against Bangladesh.
Originally set to start on May 25 in Faisalabad, the series is likely to be pushed back due to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final scheduled on the same day. Revised dates are expected soon.
Hesson, who previously guided New Zealand from 2012 to 2018 and has coached in the IPL, brings a wealth of knowledge to Pakistan’s limited-overs plans. Meanwhile, Misbah’s potential return could provide much-needed direction for the Test squad as Pakistan looks to strengthen its red-ball structure ahead of future assignments.
