Cricket Australia has confirmed the March 2027 Australia-England Test at MCG will be a pink-ball, day-night match.
The match, celebrating 150 years since the first-ever men’s Test in 1877, will be the first day-night Test played at the iconic venue.
Officials highlighted that the decision aimed to enhance crowd attendance during a period when schools and workplaces remain active.
The format is also expected to attract greater global viewership, particularly in the UK, where the final session will air in the morning.
The move marks a departure from tradition, as the original 1877 Test and the Centenary Test in 1977 were both played with a red ball in daylight conditions.
Both those encounters ended with identical results, with Australia securing victory by 45 runs.
Cricket Australia’s chief executive Todd Greenberg acknowledged the Victorian government and Melbourne Cricket Club for supporting the initiative.
He was confident the match would create unforgettable moments, like the Centenary Test featuring Hookes, McCosker, and Randall.
The Test comes amid a packed schedule for Australia in 2027, featuring home Tests against New Zealand, a five-match tour of India, and the Ashes in England.
The fixture is set to overlap with the start of the IPL, while the ODI World Cup is also planned for later that year.
