The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to review its existing points system during its board meeting in April, with potential changes to the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle starting in 2025.

A proposal under consideration could award extra points for significant victories, particularly against higher-ranked teams, which would add a new dimension to the competition.

Under the current rules, teams receive 12 points for a win, regardless of the margin, with six points for a tie and four points for a draw.

However, the ICC is reportedly considering a revision that would provide bonus points for teams achieving an innings victory or winning by a substantial margin, such as 100 runs.

This change could incentivize teams to go for commanding wins, rather than narrowly securing victories.

The proposed points system is expected to influence the dynamics of the upcoming WTC cycle, set to begin in June with India’s away Test series against England.

If approved, the new system could elevate the competition’s intensity, rewarding dominant performances and enhancing the overall strategy for teams involved in the 2025-27 cycle.
