The FIFA Club World Cup trophy made a stop in Auckland as part of its global tour ahead of the 2025 tournament in the United States.
The visit brought excitement to football fans, with Auckland City FC receiving a traditional Māori welcome at Takaparawhau by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
The club, set to represent Oceania in the tournament, was also honoured at Mount Roskill Intermediate School, where students and local elders led a formal whakatau, a Māori ceremony that acknowledges respect and unity.
The event emphasized the cultural significance of football and its role in bringing communities together.
Auckland City FC chairperson Ivan Vuksich expressed appreciation for the warm reception, highlighting the club’s commitment to grassroots football.
The school’s board chairperson, Kerry Martin, described the occasion as an inspiration for young athletes and a symbol of the sport’s global reach.
Following the ceremony, students had the rare opportunity to see the FIFA Club World Cup trophy up close.
The tour concluded with a showcase at the Sky Tower, where hundreds of fans gathered to celebrate Auckland City’s qualification.
