Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the 2025 Italian Open, tournament officials confirmed on Thursday, casting further doubt over his preparations for the upcoming French Open.

The Serbian star, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles, will not compete in the Rome Masters, one of the most significant clay-court tournaments ahead of Roland Garros. The event is scheduled to run from 7 to 18 May.

Organizers made the announcement through the tournament’s official social media accounts, but no specific reason was provided for Djokovic’s decision to step away. At 37, the six-time Rome champion—last victorious there in 2022—is still chasing his milestone 100th ATP title.

His withdrawal comes amid a difficult season. Djokovic has yet to win a title in 2025, an unusual dry spell for the world number one. He lost to Czech teenager Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final and made early exits at both the Monte Carlo Masters and the Madrid Open.

The loss in Madrid came against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi, following another clay-court defeat in Monaco against Chilean player Alejandro Tabilo. Earlier in the year, Djokovic revealed he had been dealing with an eye infection that had impacted his vision and performances on court.

After his loss in Madrid, Djokovic hinted that it might have been his last appearance at the tournament, adding to speculation about his form and long-term plans.

With the French Open fast approaching, the absence of one of the sport’s greatest players from a key warm-up event has sparked concern among fans and analysts about his readiness for the Grand Slam stage. Whether the Serbian legend can recover in time to challenge for a third Roland Garros crown remains to be seen.
