Cricket Scotland Faces Fresh Criticism Over Racism Investigation

Cricket Scotland is facing renewed criticism over its handling of racism allegations, with accusations of selectively presenting findings while withholding key details.

The controversy follows claims by former cricketer Majid Haq, his lawyer, and anti-racism group Running Out Racism that the board has been elusive in addressing past discrimination cases.

A recently surfaced report suggests Haq was racially discriminated against and victimised for speaking out.

Cricket Scotland has denied accusations of inaction, stating it has taken an anti-racist stance and is implementing 245 recommendations from the 2022 investigation into institutional racism.

The board maintains that multiple legal opinions were considered before making decisions.

In 2022, a report triggered by allegations from Haq and fellow former player Qasim Sheikh led to over 50 cases being examined by independent legal and race equality experts.

However, no sanctions were imposed, with investigators citing governance issues, the historical nature of complaints, and jurisdictional challenges.

Newly revealed legal documents reportedly contain contradictory conclusions, with one report confirming racial bias in Haq’s 2015 World Cup exclusion, while another disputes it.

Running Out Racism, which obtained a full copy of the findings from an anonymous source, claims Cricket Scotland withheld unfavorable details.

Haq has criticised the board for a lack of transparency, asserting that the report validates his belief in continued victimisation.

Meanwhile, Cricket Scotland has condemned the leak of confidential information, arguing that the findings represent differing legal opinions rather than definitive conclusions.
