The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is seriously considering extending the Indian Premier League (IPL) season to 94 matches from 2028, though it has no immediate plans to add new franchises.

Currently played with 10 teams and 74 matches, the IPL grew to this format in 2022 with the arrival of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. An expansion to 84 matches had been discussed for 2025, but broadcasters’ concerns over a crowded schedule delayed the move.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal recently shared that the BCCI might adopt a full home-and-away format in the next media rights cycle. He mentioned that discussions were ongoing within BCCI and at ICC levels, recognising the growing fan preference for franchise cricket over bilateral series.

Dhumal highlighted that moving to 94 matches would require a longer tournament window, which is currently locked between mid-March and end-May for the next two years. He admitted it would not be possible immediately due to tight international commitments but remained optimistic about future changes.

The upcoming Future Tours Programme negotiations will play a crucial role in shaping the IPL’s expansion. Some team officials have already backed the idea, but broadcaster concerns about viewer fatigue remain a hurdle, especially after the recent formation of JioStar, following the Reliance-Disney merger.

While there is strong investor interest in IPL growth, Dhumal confirmed that BCCI is content with the existing 10 teams, prioritising tournament quality over expansion.

Reviewing the ongoing season, Dhumal expressed satisfaction with the competition level and the rise of new Indian players. He also hoped that a first-time winner, such as Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, or Lucknow Super Giants, would lift the trophy this year.
