Islamabad Court Cracks Down on Dog Killings

According to a ruling by the Islamabad High Court, killing stray dogs in the capital is now illegal and punishable by jail time. The court mandated that police prosecute anyone found to have been involved in such killings, including officials.

Nelofar, an animal rights activist, filed the lawsuit after presenting images of dead dogs discovered inside a CDA truck. The court found that dogs were still being killed despite pledges to adhere to a humane trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release program.

Dr. Ghani Ikram, an eyewitness, attested to seeing dead dogs being driven in a CDA vehicle. The judge then ordered the CDA official to come to court and provide an explanation.

According to Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro, all stray dogs should be vaccinated and given care rather than being put down. On October 27, 2025, the case will be heard once more.
