Celebrated Irish author Sally Rooney has said she will continue supporting Palestine Action, even after the UK government outlawed the activist group under terrorism laws.
In an article for The Irish Times, Rooney announced that she would donate her royalties from BBC adaptations of her novels to the group. The decision comes weeks after Britain banned Palestine Action, citing a high-profile protest in which activists broke into a military base in Oxfordshire and damaged aircraft. Authorities said the incident caused millions of pounds in losses.
Rooney stated that her books remain widely distributed in Britain, with the BBC and leading retailers continuing to profit from her work. She argued that if backing Palestine Action makes her a supporter of terrorism under UK law, then those institutions should also be held accountable for funding her activities.
Known for her bestselling novel Normal People, Rooney said she felt compelled to speak after more than 500 demonstrators were detained in a single day earlier this month. She accused the government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer of prioritising relations with Israel at the expense of basic freedoms.
