The French presidency has dismissed concerns over a viral video showing an unusual moment between President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, as he arrived in Vietnam to begin his Southeast Asian tour.
Footage shared on social media captured President Macron stepping out of his plane in Hanoi on Sunday evening. Moments later, Brigitte’s hands appeared from the doorway, seemingly touching or lightly pushing his face.
The President looked briefly startled but quickly composed himself and waved to onlookers. Brigitte remained partially hidden behind the aircraft door, making it difficult to interpret her facial expression.

The couple proceeded down the stairs for an official welcome, with observers noting that Brigitte did not take the President’s extended arm.
While the clip quickly gained attention online — especially among critics — the French government clarified the situation. An aide close to the President described it as a light and personal exchange between the couple, explaining it as a moment of levity before the start of formal engagements. Another official dismissed online speculation, suggesting the interaction had been exaggerated.
President Macron’s visit to Vietnam marks the beginning of a broader diplomatic effort to strengthen France’s presence in Southeast Asia amid shifting global alliances.
