The United States has introduced a new visa policy targeting foreign officials involved in censoring American citizens on social media platforms. The move, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, signals a tougher stance from Washington on international efforts that it views as restricting freedom of expression protected under US law.

Rubio stated that officials who attempt to limit online speech by Americans—whether through legal action or by pressuring US tech firms to follow foreign rules—could now face travel restrictions. Though no individuals or countries were named, the policy represents a significant shift in US diplomacy.

The decision comes amid growing friction between US-based tech companies and European governments over digital regulations. The European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), aimed at holding platforms accountable for illegal content, has been met with criticism in the US. Companies like Meta have raised concerns about overreach, while former officials have described the DSA as a threat to free speech.

Following the introduction of the DSA, Meta halted its US fact-checking program but continues the practice elsewhere. Meanwhile, EU regulators recently accused X (formerly Twitter) of violating content rules.

Rubio’s comments also follow criticism of foreign efforts to influence digital platforms through what US officials describe as censorship. He argued that protecting Americans’ online rights is now a foreign policy priority.

The announcement drew support from figures like Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski and coincided with a visit by Germany’s foreign minister, during which trade talks and digital policy were expected to be discussed.
