Tel Aviv – An elderly anti-government activist in her 70s has come under investigation in Israel over an alleged plot to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, police confirmed.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, is suspected of planning to kill the prime minister by soliciting weapons and gathering intelligence on his security protocols. The investigation is being led by the National Unit for Serious and International Crime Investigations and the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security agency).
Authorities have reportedly handed over their findings to the State Attorney’s Office, which is expected to decide on formal charges.
According to a report by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the suspect—who resides in Tel Aviv—had recently suffered from a serious illness and allegedly told people that she intended to “take Netanyahu with her.” These remarks raised concern among fellow activists, several of whom alerted the police.
Police say the woman actively sought assistance from other anti-government activists to obtain weapons and plan a possible attack, potentially using an explosive device or even a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), Haaretz reported.
The woman was arrested about six weeks ago and has since been released to house arrest as the investigation continues.
This rare and serious case has stunned both political and civil society circles, as tensions over Netanyahu’s policies continue to divide the country.
