A deadly bomb attack on a mosque in Syria in December 2025 has left the country in deep shock and mourning. The attack took place in the city of Homs, targeting a mosque in a residential area and killing eight people while 18 others were injured.
The explosion happened near the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi Al-Dhahab neighborhood. This area is mainly home to members of the Alawite community. The blast occurred a day before the funeral, spreading fear and grief among local residents.
Despite heavy rain and cold weather, hundreds of mourners gathered outside the mosque. People stood silently, praying for the victims and showing solidarity with the families who lost loved ones. After the prayers, funeral convoys drove through the city to bury the dead.
Initial investigations by Syrian authorities suggest that explosive devices were planted inside the mosque. Officials have not yet officially named those responsible. However, a little-known armed group calling itself Saraya Ansar Al-Sunna claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement shared on the messaging app Telegram.
In its message, the group said the attack was aimed at members of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shia Islam. Hard-line extremist groups often target religious minorities, calling them apostates. This has raised serious concerns about rising sectarian violence in Syria.
The same group had earlier claimed responsibility for another deadly attack in June 2025. In that incident, a suicide bomber opened fire and detonated an explosive vest inside a Greek Orthodox church near Damascus, killing 25 worshippers during Sunday prayers.
The latest mosque bombing has increased fears among Syrians who are already exhausted by years of conflict. Religious leaders and community members have called for unity and peace, urging people not to respond with hatred.
As investigations continue, Syrians mourn yet another tragic loss. The attack serves as a painful reminder of how civilians and places of worship remain vulnerable, even as the country struggles to move toward stability and healing.
