Pakistan Moves Toward Regulating Satellite Internet

With global players like Starlink entering Pakistan, several Chinese companies are now exploring opportunities to offer satellite internet services in the country. In response, the Pakistani government has taken steps to finalise a regulatory framework to manage these operations.

A detailed consultant report, prepared by the Pakistan Space Activity Regulatory Board (PSARB), has already been sent to relevant authorities such as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The report includes suggestions for rules and license terms for companies interested in providing satellite-based internet.

The PTA is now evaluating the report and is expected to send its opinion back to the PSARB soon. Once the feedback is incorporated, the final version of the regulations will be published.

The proposed guidelines have also been shared with other government departments to gather input from all stakeholders. Officials involved in the process have said the priority is to develop a well-thought-out policy rather than rushing to issue licenses.

One official noted that the government is carefully examining possible technical hurdles before opening the market to commercial satellite operators.

A notable feature under review is direct satellite-to-phone connectivity, which could transform communication access in remote parts of the country.
