OpenAI Adds Study Mode to Curb Passive Learning

In a move to address growing concerns over AI’s role in education, OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT feature called Study Mode, which encourages students to think more independently and avoid over-reliance on AI-generated answers.

The feature was rolled out on Tuesday to all logged-in users, including those on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. OpenAI said it would soon become available for ChatGPT Edu, a version used in schools.

With Study Mode activated, ChatGPT shifts its behaviour. Rather than giving users direct answers, it prompts questions that test understanding and encourages interaction. In many instances, it will only offer help once the student has made an attempt or engaged with the topic.

Leah Belsky, who oversees education initiatives at OpenAI, told TechCrunch that the goal is to support deeper learning. She noted that turning ChatGPT into a learning partner—rather than an answer machine—is key to reducing the risks of passive use.

Since its release in 2022, ChatGPT has faced criticism in academic circles. Many schools banned its use early on, fearing it would impact student development. But by 2023, some institutions began experimenting with it as a classroom resource.

Experts have raised concerns about how AI might affect mental engagement. A recent study suggested that using ChatGPT to complete assignments could lead to reduced brain activity compared to traditional research methods.

Though Study Mode represents a significant shift, there are limitations. Students can easily turn off the feature, and currently, there are no administrative tools for teachers or parents to manage usage. OpenAI hinted that such controls might be added later.
